A WV voter registration card replacement is free, and you can request one by submitting a new voter registration application to your county clerk online, by mail, or in person. The replacement typically arrives by mail about ten days after your application is processed. One thing worth knowing before you do anything else: you do not need the physical card to vote. What Goes on the Application
Replacement requests use the same West Virginia Voter Registration Application form used for new registrations, address changes, and name changes. You can download it from the Secretary of State’s website or pick one up at any county clerk’s office.
The form asks for the following, under oath:
- Your full legal name, including any middle or former name
- Your date of birth
- Your current residential address, including street or route, city, and county
- Your West Virginia driver’s license number or DMV-issued ID number. If you don’t have either, the last four digits of your Social Security number

The form also asks whether you’re submitting a new registration, an address change, a name change, or a party affiliation change. If none of your information has changed and you just need a new copy of your card, you don’t need to check any of those boxes. Complete the required fields and note that you’re requesting a replacement.
Three Ways to Submit
You have three options for getting the application to your county clerk.
Online. The Secretary of State’s portal at ovr.sos.wv.gov lets you register or update your information electronically. By mail. Print and complete the application, then mail it to the county clerk in the county where you live. In person. Visit your county clerk’s office during regular business hours. This is the fastest option because staff can verify your application on the spot. How Long the Replacement Takes
Once the county clerk receives your application, they cross-reference your information with state records to confirm you’re a registered voter. After that check, the replacement card is printed and mailed. Expect it about ten days from the date your application is processed. Address and name changes move through the same verification track, so the timeline is similar if you’re updating information along with requesting a new card.
Timing Around an Election
West Virginia requires voter registration applications to be received at least 21 days before an election. A pure replacement request for unchanged information doesn’t affect your registration status, so this cutoff matters less. But if you’re using this form to update a name or address, the application must reach the county clerk before the 21-day deadline. Missing it while registered at an old address could send you to the wrong polling place.
Checking Your Status While You Wait
The Secretary of State’s website has a voter profile tool where you can confirm your registration is active and review your current record. It shows your polling place, party affiliation, and assigned districts, and it confirms whether any recent changes have posted. If something looks wrong, call your county clerk directly rather than waiting for the card to arrive.
If the Card Doesn’t Arrive Before You Vote
Show up anyway.
