How to Get an Alabama State Tax ID Number Online

To get an Alabama state tax ID number online, register your business through My Alabama Taxes (MAT), the free Alabama Department of Revenue (ADOR) portal at myalabamataxes.alabama.gov. There is no single “state tax ID” in Alabama; ADOR issues a separate account number for each tax type your business is required to collect or pay, and most applicants receive their numbers within three to five business days after submitting.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Business Tax Online Registration System Registration is free, and the same login you create becomes your permanent access point for filings and payments afterward.

Decide Which Tax Accounts You Need

Before you open the portal, work out which accounts apply to your business. This drives every choice you’ll make during registration.

Sales Tax

If you sell tangible personal property at retail in Alabama, you need a sales tax account. The general state rate is 4%, with reduced rates for groceries (2% as of September 2025), automotive vehicles (2%), and manufacturing machinery (1.5%).2Alabama Department of Revenue. Do Out-of-State Sellers Need to Register?

You don’t need a physical presence in Alabama to owe sales tax there. Any remote seller with more than $250,000 in retail sales delivered into Alabama during the previous calendar year must register, collect, and remit.7Alabama Department of Revenue. Are All Remote Sellers Required to Register in Alabama? Once you cross the threshold in one year, registration kicks in on January 1 of the following year. Sales through a marketplace facilitator that already collects on your behalf are generally excluded from your individual threshold, but direct sales through your own website count in full.

What to Have Ready Before You Start

MAT will not accept an incomplete application, so gather everything before opening the portal.

  • Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). Required for corporations, partnerships, and every LLC structure regardless of number of members. Only sole proprietors without an LLC may use an SSN instead. If you don’t have one yet, apply on the IRS website first; it’s free and usually issued immediately.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Is an FEIN Needed to Apply for an Alabama Tax Account?
  • Legal business name and entity type, matching exactly what you filed with the Alabama Secretary of State.
  • Physical address and mailing address. Enter both if they differ.
  • Date your business activity began, or will begin, in Alabama. This sets your first filing period.
  • NAICS code, the six-digit industry classification for your primary activity, available at census.gov/naics.
  • Responsible party information: names, titles, and SSNs for owners, officers, or partners, used by ADOR for identity verification.
  • Payroll details if registering for withholding: estimated number of employees and the date of your first payroll.

One trap catches single-member LLC owners regularly: they assume they can register with a personal SSN the way a sole proprietor would. They cannot. ADOR requires an FEIN for every LLC.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Is an FEIN Needed to Apply for an Alabama Tax Account?

Create Your MAT Account

On the portal, select the option to create a new account, enter an email address, and set a password. ADOR sends a verification email with an authorization code you’ll need for your first login.9Alabama Department of Revenue. My Alabama Taxes Sign-Up Keep these credentials safe; they’ll be your permanent access to all future filings and payments.

Enter Your Business Information

Once logged in, choose the new business registration option. The system asks for your FEIN (or SSN if you’re a sole proprietor), legal business name, and entity structure. After verification, you select which tax accounts to open from the list of state and state-administered local tax types.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Business Tax Online Registration System

Fill In the Tax-Specific Sections

MAT generates a separate section for each tax type you selected. A sales tax account asks for the physical business location and expected filing frequency. Withholding registration asks for estimated employee count and first payroll date. Built-in validation flags missing fields at submission time rather than after.

Review and Submit

The portal shows a summary of every entry before submission. Check the FEIN and legal name carefully, then sign electronically and submit. MAT returns a confirmation number, which is your proof of submission and lets you check status.10Alabama Department of Revenue. How Do I Register for a Tax Account? The confirmation number is not your tax ID. Save it anyway.

What You Receive After Submitting

Expect your account number within three to five business days.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Business Tax Online Registration System ADOR delivers it through your MAT account. If you registered for multiple tax types, you may receive a separate number for each. From that point, the number is your identifier for filing returns, making payments, and corresponding with ADOR on that tax.

A sales tax number also lets you issue and accept resale certificates. When you buy inventory intended for resale, you give the supplier your Alabama sales tax number on a resale certificate, and the supplier sells you the goods without charging sales tax; the tax is collected later when you sell to the end consumer. Alabama accepts the Multistate Tax Commission’s Uniform Sales and Use Tax Resale Certificate, so your number works on that standardized form as well.

If You’re Using an Accountant or Payroll Service

MAT supports third-party access. You can grant an accountant, bookkeeper, or payroll service login authority to view accounts, file returns, and make payments, and many CPAs handle the entire registration for new businesses as part of their setup work. Even when someone else does the filings, the business owner remains legally responsible for accuracy and timeliness, so keep copies of every confirmation number and filed return.
