How to Get an Arizona Tax ID Number: Apply, Fees, and Renewal

To get an Arizona tax ID number for your business, you apply for a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) license through the Arizona Department of Revenue using the Joint Tax Application (Form JT-1), either online at AZTaxes.gov or by mail.1Arizona Department of Revenue. Joint Tax Application for a TPT License The state fee is $12 per business location, and most cities add their own licensing fee on top. The TPT is not a conventional sales tax. It taxes the privilege of doing business in Arizona, which makes the business itself legally responsible for the tax.2City of Phoenix. What Is Transaction Privilege and Use Tax?

Who Needs a TPT License

Arizona law is direct: you cannot engage in or continue doing business until you have a TPT license.3Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 42-5005 – Transaction Privilege Tax and Municipal Privilege Tax License That covers anyone receiving gross proceeds or income from a taxable activity in the state — retail, contracting, restaurants, rentals, and more. Sole proprietors, LLCs, corporations, and partnerships all need one.

Remote sellers and marketplace facilitators without a physical presence in Arizona are covered too. If your gross sales to Arizona customers exceed $100,000, you must register and begin collecting and remitting tax.4Arizona Department of Revenue. 2026 Transaction Privilege Tax License Renewals If your sales later drop below that threshold, you can cancel your license rather than renew.

What to Have Ready Before You Apply

The Joint Tax Application registers your business for the TPT license, Use Tax, and Employer Withholding on a single form.1Arizona Department of Revenue. Joint Tax Application for a TPT License Gather this information before you start:

  • Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN). Sole proprietors without employees can use a Social Security Number instead.
  • Legal entity name, exactly as filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission or Secretary of State.
  • Business structure: LLC, corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship, or other.
  • NAICS code, the six-digit industry code the state uses to apply the correct tax categories.
  • Physical and mailing addresses. Official tax notices go here.
  • Date business started in Arizona. This should be the actual first day of taxable activity; listing a later date can trigger retroactive assessments.
  • Names, titles, and Social Security Numbers for all owners, officers, or managing members.

The form also asks for a tax accounting period, which defaults to the calendar year. Choose a fiscal year if that’s what your federal return uses. Pay attention to the Business Class section — it decides which TPT classifications apply to your revenue, and a restaurant is classed differently from a general retailer.

Arizona treats accuracy on tax documents seriously. False or misleading information can bring civil penalties, and the state can enjoin a delinquent taxpayer from continuing to do business.5Justia. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 42 – Taxation Cross-check every field against your federal records.

What It Costs

The state charges $12 per business location.3Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 42-5005 – Transaction Privilege Tax and Municipal Privilege Tax License Three locations, $36 to the state. Simple.

Municipal fees are less predictable. Each Arizona city and town sets its own rate, and they range from as low as $2 to over $50 per location. The Arizona Department of Revenue publishes a fee table listing the current rate for every participating municipality.6Arizona Department of Revenue. License Fees, Cancellation and Other Changes Check it before you apply, because the combined state and municipal fees are submitted as a single payment. Add the $12 state fee for each location, then add the applicable municipal fee for each city where you operate.

How to Apply

Online at AZTaxes.gov

The fastest route is registering online.7Arizona Department of Revenue. Applying for a TPT License Create an account at AZTaxes.gov, then work through the business registration section: enter your business information, select business classes, and pay the combined state and municipal fees. Online applications are typically processed within two to three business days, and you can download and print your license certificate directly from the portal once approved. One exception: construction contractors cannot register through the online portal and have to use a different process.

By Mail

If you prefer paper, download Form JT-1 from the Department of Revenue website, complete it, and mail it with your payment. Expect several weeks, because the department enters your information manually. Your license is mailed to the address on file once the application clears.

After You Get Your License

Displaying It

Every business with a public location must display the TPT license where customers can see it.8Cornell Law School – Legal Information Institute. Arizona Administrative Code R15-5-2201 – Display and Issuance of License Multiple locations each need their own displayed license. Commercial lessors must display the license at each location from which they conduct leasing transactions. Remote sellers and marketplace facilitators without a physical presence in Arizona are exempt from the display requirement.

Your Filing Frequency

The state assigns you a filing frequency based on your estimated annual combined tax liability:9Arizona Department of Revenue. TPT Filing Frequency

  • Annual, if estimated annual tax liability is less than $2,000.
  • Quarterly, if it falls between $2,000 and $8,000.
  • Monthly, if it exceeds $8,000.

The department can adjust your schedule later if your actual liability differs from the estimate. Missing a filing deadline brings a late-filing penalty of 4.5% of the tax due per month, capped at 25%, and unpaid balances add a separate 0.5% monthly penalty capped at 10%. Those two stack.10Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 42-1125 – Civil Penalties

Buying Tax-Free for Resale

Once your TPT license is active, you can buy inventory tax-free by giving vendors an Arizona Resale Certificate (Form 5000A) documenting that the goods are for resale in the ordinary course of business. The certificate can cover a single transaction or a period of up to 48 months, as long as the vendor has documentation that your license is still valid. If you end up using or consuming those goods yourself, you owe Arizona use tax on them.

Renewing Each Year

TPT licenses must be renewed every year by January 1. There’s no state-level renewal fee.11Arizona Department of Revenue. Renewing a TPT License Most municipalities charge an annual renewal fee that varies by city and activity. In Phoenix, for example, the standard renewal fee is $50 for most business activities, while residential rental operators pay $2 per unit up to a $50 maximum.12City of Phoenix. Transaction Privilege (Sales) and Use Tax License Fees

Renewals received after January 31 draw a penalty of 50% of the applicable city renewal fee, and the department won’t mail the renewed license until the balance is cleared.4Arizona Department of Revenue. 2026 Transaction Privilege Tax License Renewals If you’ve stopped operating, cancel the license rather than let renewal obligations and penalties keep accruing.

If You’re Buying an Existing Business

The TPT license is not transferable. When ownership changes, the new owner must apply for a new license number, not step into the seller’s account. That’s the first thing to know.

The second is more expensive. Arizona law makes the buyer responsible for withholding enough of the purchase price to cover any unpaid tax, interest, and penalties the previous owner still owes.13Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 42-1110 – Successor Liability for Tax Before closing, ask the seller to request a clearance certificate from the Department of Revenue, which the department has 15 days to issue or explain. Skip that step and discover unpaid taxes later, and you become personally liable. With the certificate in hand, any pre-sale deficiency uncovered in a later audit stays with the seller.

Closing the License

When you close the business or stop taxable activity in Arizona, cancel the license promptly. You can do it online through AZTaxes.gov by opening your account, selecting Account Update, and choosing “close account.” You can also file your final TPT return with the “FINAL RETURN (Cancel License)” box checked, submit a Business Account Update Form, or mail the license itself back to the department with “Cancel” written across it.6Arizona Department of Revenue. License Fees, Cancellation and Other Changes A simple name change with the same ownership and location doesn’t need a new license — a Business Account Update Form handles that. Any change in actual ownership does.
