An Idaho enhanced concealed carry permit requires an eight-hour approved handgun course, an application filed in person at your county sheriff’s office, fingerprinting, a background check, and a total initial fee of about $56.10. The permit is valid for five years. In a state where most residents can already carry concealed without any license, the enhanced version exists primarily to buy you recognition in other states that refuse to honor Idaho’s standard permit.
Why Idahoans Get the Enhanced Permit
Idaho law exempts residents from needing a concealed carry license in a wide range of situations, including carrying outside city limits for anyone 18 or older and carrying within city limits for qualified residents.1Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302 – Concealed Weapons So the real question is interstate travel.
Several states honor Idaho’s enhanced permit but not the standard version. Delaware, Minnesota, Nevada, Washington, and Wisconsin all fall into that category. If you never cross state lines armed, the enhanced permit adds little. If you do, it’s the only Idaho-issued document that gets you into those states legally.
Who Qualifies
You have to meet every requirement below. The sheriff cannot waive any of them.
- At least 21 years old.
- An Idaho resident for at least six consecutive months before applying, or a non-resident who holds a current concealed carry permit from your home state.
- A U.S. citizen or legal resident who is not prohibited from possessing firearms under state or federal law.
- Completion of the required handgun course within the 12 months immediately before you file.
These come directly from the enhanced license statute.2Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302K – Issuance of Enhanced Licenses to Carry Concealed Weapons
What Disqualifies You
The enhanced permit uses the same disqualifiers as the standard license. You’ll be denied if you’ve been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year of imprisonment, are a fugitive from justice, unlawfully use controlled substances, have been dishonorably discharged from the military, or have been adjudicated as lacking mental capacity or as mentally ill.1Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302 – Concealed Weapons The background check also searches mental health databases for commitments or conditions that would disqualify you under state or federal law.2Idaho State Legislature. A separate federal prohibition applies if you’ve been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. That conviction bars you from possessing any firearm or ammunition regardless of what state law allows, and a violation carries up to 15 years in federal prison.3Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). If You Live Out of State
Idaho does issue enhanced permits to non-residents, but you must already hold a current concealed carry permit from your home state.2Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302K – Issuance of Enhanced Licenses to Carry Concealed Weapons You still have to complete the Idaho-specific course, apply in person at an Idaho county sheriff’s office, and pass the same background check. Training from another state doesn’t count unless it was specifically an Idaho enhanced permit course.4Idaho State Police. Concealed Weapons License Reciprocity
The Training Course
The mandatory course runs at least eight hours and must be taught by an instructor certified by the Idaho State Police or another entity approved under state law. The course cannot be more than 12 months old at the time you file.2Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302K – Issuance of Enhanced Licenses to Carry Concealed Weapons
Classroom time covers Idaho’s self-defense laws, safe handling and storage of handguns, and situational awareness. The live-fire portion requires you to fire at least 98 rounds under the instructor’s supervision, demonstrating basic marksmanship and safe handling at a range.2Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302K – Issuance of Enhanced Licenses to Carry Concealed Weapons That live-fire component is the main reason other states give the enhanced permit more weight than the standard Idaho license.
At the end of the course, you receive a certificate of completion. For the enhanced permit, the form must be signed by both a firearms instructor and a legal instructor.5Kootenai County Sheriff, ID. Concealed Weapons Permit You’ll submit that certificate with your application.
How to Apply
You apply in person at the sheriff’s office in the county where you live.
- Fill out the enhanced permit application with your personal information and any relevant legal history.
- Attach your signed training certificate.
- Get fingerprinted at the sheriff’s office. The prints are forwarded to the Idaho State Police and the FBI for a criminal history check.6Idaho State Police. Fingerprinting and Background Checks
- Pay the total initial fee of $56.10, which covers the license fee plus fingerprint processing and materials. The amount is set by statute, not by individual counties.7Payette County. Concealed Weapons License
Processing takes up to 90 days. The sheriff must receive the background check results before issuing the license, and if everything clears, the permit is issued without discretion. The sheriff cannot deny it for subjective reasons if you meet every statutory requirement.8Ada County Sheriff. Concealed Weapons Permit
How the Enhanced Permit Differs From the Standard One
Idaho issues two concealed carry permits. The differences come down to training and recognition.
The standard permit accepts a general firearms familiarization course, such as a hunter safety certificate or military service record, with no specific hour count or minimum round requirement. The initial fee is the same $56.10. The enhanced permit requires the full eight-hour approved course and at least 98 live-fire rounds.
Where this matters is the reciprocity list. The enhanced permit is recognized in roughly 37 or more states, and the Idaho State Police maintains the current list on its reciprocity page.4Idaho State Police. Concealed Weapons License Reciprocity Agreements shift as other states update their laws, so check before you travel. And remember that the host state’s local carry rules apply to you once you’re there. Some states prohibit carry in establishments that serve alcohol, some require you to inform an officer during traffic stops, and some restrict parks or government buildings beyond what Idaho allows. Breaking those rules while carrying on an Idaho permit gets you charged under that state’s law.
Where You Still Can’t Carry in Idaho
Even with a valid enhanced permit, Idaho law bans concealed carry in:
- Courthouses
- Juvenile detention facilities
- Jails and prisons
- Public and private elementary and secondary schools
These restrictions apply regardless of permit status.9Idaho Office of Attorney General. Concealed Weapons Federal law adds further prohibited locations, including federal courthouses and airport secured areas. Private businesses may ban firearms on their premises, and ignoring posted restrictions can bring trespassing charges. Narrow exceptions exist under Idaho Code 18-3302C and 18-3302D for certain people and circumstances, but the default rule for permit holders is that these locations are off-limits.
Renewing the Permit
The enhanced permit is valid for five years.2Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 18-3302K – Issuance of Enhanced Licenses to Carry Concealed Weapons Renewal means filing a new application with the county sheriff’s office and passing another background check. The fee is $37.85.7Payette County. Concealed Weapons License No additional training is required.
Timing matters. You cannot renew more than 90 days before your permit expires. If it has been expired fewer than 90 days, you can still renew but will pay an extra $10 late fee. If it has been expired more than 180 days, the renewal option is gone and you start over with a brand-new application, including retaking the training course and paying the full initial fee.
