To get an Iowa tax ID number, register your business through the Iowa Department of Revenue’s online portal, GovConnectIowa. The application is free, covers multiple tax types on a single form, and most applicants receive their permit letter within one business day.1Department of Revenue. Business Permit Registration A paper alternative exists, but it can take up to six weeks.
Do You Actually Need to Register
You need an Iowa tax ID if your business sells taxable goods or services in the state, employs workers there, or makes purchases on which Iowa sales tax was not collected. Each activity ties to a different tax type, and one application can cover them all.1Department of Revenue. Business Permit Registration
The two most common accounts are sales and use tax and withholding tax. A sales tax permit lets you collect Iowa’s 6% state sales tax, plus a 1% local option sales tax where it applies, and send it to the state.2Department of Revenue. Iowa Tax/Fee Descriptions and Rates A withholding account lets you deduct state income tax from employee wages and remit it.3Cornell Law Institute. Iowa Admin Code r 701-307.1 – Who Must Withhold If you buy equipment or supplies from out-of-state sellers who don’t charge Iowa tax, the same sales and use tax permit handles the use tax you owe on those purchases.
Remote Sellers
You don’t need a physical presence in Iowa to trigger registration. Remote sellers who bring in $100,000 or more in gross revenue from Iowa sales in the previous or current calendar year must register and collect tax like any local retailer.4Department of Revenue. Remote Sellers and Marketplace Facilitators Iowa does not currently set a separate transaction-count threshold; the $100,000 figure is the sole trigger. If you sell through a marketplace like Amazon or Etsy, the platform may already collect Iowa tax on your behalf, but check whether that covers every Iowa sale or only the ones running through the marketplace.
What to Gather Before You Apply
Have this information ready before you start:
- Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) from the IRS. You need one if your business has employees or is set up as a corporation, partnership, or LLC, or if you owe excise taxes. A sole proprietor without employees can use a Social Security Number instead, though an FEIN keeps personal and business finances separate.5Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number
- Your legal business name and any trade name (DBA), matching what you registered with the Iowa Secretary of State.
- Business address, plus a mailing address if it’s different.
- Entity type (sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation, partnership, or other) and the business start date.
- Full name and Social Security Number for each owner or officer, if you’re a corporation, partnership, or LLC.
- A brief description of your primary business activity.
Get the owner and officer details right the first time. When you apply for an FEIN, you designate a responsible party, meaning the individual who owns or controls the business and manages its funds. That person must be an individual, not another entity.6Internal Revenue Service. Responsible Parties and Nominees Iowa ties this information to your state tax accounts.

Collecting Tax Before Your Number Arrives
You don’t have to wait for the official letter to start collecting sales tax. Keep a copy of the confirmation you receive when you submit your registration; that copy stands in as proof of registration until the permit arrives.7Department of Revenue. Starting a Business If you wait, you’ll owe any uncollected tax out of your own pocket.
What You Get, and What Comes Next
The permit letter contains your account number, your IDR ID, and instructions for filing and paying. Online applicants can pull the letter up under the “View Letters” action in GovConnectIowa; paper applicants receive the same information by mail.1Department of Revenue. Business Permit Registration
The letter also assigns your filing frequency, meaning how often you need to submit returns and remit collected tax. Sales and use tax filers owing $1,200 or more per calendar year file monthly; those below the threshold file annually, with an annual return due January 31.8Cornell Law Institute. Iowa Code r 701-202.1 – Sales and Use Tax Return Filing Withholding uses a three-tier schedule: quarterly under $6,000 a year, monthly from $6,000 to $120,000, and semimonthly above $120,000.9Department of Revenue. Filing Frequency and Return Due Dates Your assigned frequency shows up in the permit letter and in your GovConnectIowa account. Check it, and note the first due date; that’s where new registrants tend to slip.
Closing the Account Later
One boundary worth knowing at the registration stage: if the business later closes, stops selling taxable goods, or no longer has Iowa employees, you have to formally cancel the tax accounts. An open account keeps generating filing obligations, and missed returns generate penalties whether or not you’re still operating.
Cancel through GovConnectIowa, or file Form 92-034 (Iowa Business Tax Cancellation) by mail or fax.10Department of Revenue. Iowa Business Tax Cancellation Form 92-034 File all returns through the effective cancellation date. Your final return is due by the end of the month following that date; a March 15 close means an April 30 final return.
