How to Get Psilocybin Mushrooms in Oregon: Costs, Rules, and Sessions

To get psilocybin mushrooms in Oregon legally, you book a session at a state-licensed psilocybin service center, meet with a licensed facilitator beforehand for a preparation session, and then consume a tested psilocybin product on-site under that facilitator’s supervision. You cannot buy the mushrooms to take home, and the entire program runs through the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) under Ballot Measure 109.¹ Expect to pay between roughly $850 and $3,000 out of pocket, plus a 15 percent state tax.

Who Qualifies

You must be at least 21. Licensed centers cannot sell or deliver psilocybin to anyone younger, and a person under 21 is not even allowed on the premises.²³

Beyond age, there is no medical gatekeeping. You do not need a prescription, a referral, or a diagnosis, and the OHA is clear that psilocybin services are not a medical or clinical treatment. Residency is not required either. Out-of-state and international visitors participate on the same terms as Oregonians.⁴ All you need to bring is a valid government-issued ID.

Finding a Licensed Service Center

The OHA publishes a directory of licensed service centers and facilitators who have opted in to being listed.⁵ You contact a center directly to book. This directory is the only reliable way to confirm you are dealing with a licensed provider; anything sold or offered outside this system is illegal in Oregon, regardless of what it’s called.

Some centers run group administration sessions with required client-to-facilitator ratios, and those tend to cost less per person than one-on-one sessions.⁴

The Preparation Session

Before you consume anything, you have a mandatory one-on-one preparation session with your facilitator. It must happen at least 24 hours before your administration session and no more than 90 days before it.⁶

Two documents get completed during this session. The Client Information Form covers health history, including lithium use in the past 30 days, any history or treatment of active psychosis, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any history of wanting to harm yourself or others. It also gives you space to describe mental health history, substance use, and triggers you want your facilitator to know about.⁷ The Informed Consent form has you initial that you understand psilocybin is not FDA-approved, remains a federal Schedule I substance, and carries side effects including nausea, anxiety, elevated heart rate, altered perception of time, and recovery of repressed memories.⁸

Screening is not automatic disqualification, but facilitators use your answers to decide whether the experience is safe to proceed with, and the consent form advises anyone on prescription medication or with a medical or mental health condition to consult a healthcare provider first.⁸

You’ll also lock in a transportation plan for getting home after your administration session. You cannot drive yourself, ride a bicycle, or use any self-operated transportation.⁶ No ride, no session. If you’re flying in from out of state, plan this before you plan the flight.

The Administration Session

This is where you actually take the psilocybin product. It happens at the licensed service center, on-site only, and your facilitator stays with you the entire time.⁹ Every product sold has been tested for potency and safety before it reaches you.¹⁰

How long you stay depends on your dose. Oregon sets a minimum session length that scales with dosage; for lower doses the minimum can be as short as one hour, and higher doses require longer stays.⁴ When you’re released, you leave the way you planned: designated driver, rideshare, or another method that doesn’t put you behind the wheel or on a bike.

You cannot take any product with you. Whatever you don’t consume stays at the service center.

After the Session

Your facilitator is required to make follow-up contact within 72 hours of your administration session. A formal integration session, where you meet again to talk through the experience, is optional under state rules, though many centers build one into their standard package.¹¹

What It Costs

A single dosing session, typically packaged with the preparation and follow-up, runs roughly $850 to $3,000. The price depends on the provider, the dosage, and whether you book individually or in a group; some providers charge more than the top of that range. Pricing is unregulated, so every center sets its own fees.⁴

Oregon adds a 15 percent state excise tax on the sales price of the psilocybin product itself, collected by the service center at the time of your session.¹² Insurance covers none of this. Because the program is defined as non-medical, no health plan reimburses for it. Traveling in? Add airfare, lodging, and ground transportation to the total.

What Stays Illegal

Oregon’s program is permissive only inside a licensed service center. Buying, possessing, and consuming psilocybin at a licensed center under supervision is legal, and that’s the entire scope of the legalization.⁹ You cannot buy mushrooms at a dispensary or a store, take leftover product home, or share, gift, or give psilocybin to anyone. Using it as a prize or giveaway in a contest is its own violation.¹³

Possessing psilocybin outside a licensed service center falls under Oregon’s general controlled substance laws. Penalties scale with the amount:

Federal Law and Your Job

Psilocybin is still a Schedule I substance under federal law. The consent form you sign spells this out: federal law prohibits the manufacture, distribution, and possession of psilocybin even in states that allow its use.⁸ Federal authorities have not moved against Oregon’s licensed centers, but the conflict has consequences elsewhere.

If your job is covered by Department of Transportation drug testing, such as commercial driving, aviation, or transit work, federal rules govern regardless of where you live. The standard DOT panel does not test for psilocybin, but any admission or evidence of use can trigger removal from duty and a return-to-duty process through a Substance Abuse Professional. Private employers with zero-tolerance policies may also treat use as grounds for discipline. Oregon law itself acknowledges the limit: nothing in the psilocybin services framework requires insurance coverage, changes employment law, or overrides federal compliance obligations.¹⁶

Legal under state law inside a service center is not the same as protected everywhere else. Plan accordingly.
