To get temporary tags in Ohio, take proof of ownership, a valid ID, and proof of insurance to any BMV Deputy Registrar office, pay $23, and sign a Financial Responsibility Statement. The tag is good for 45 days. If you’re buying from a licensed Ohio dealer, the dealer can issue the tag electronically at the time of sale for the same $23.
What to Bring
The BMV wants to see three things: that you own the vehicle, who you are, and that it’s insured. Specifically:
- An Ohio Certificate of Title or Memorandum of Title for the vehicle.
- An Ohio driver’s license, Ohio state ID, or proof of your Social Security number.
- A Tax ID number if the vehicle is titled in a business name.
- A lease agreement and power of attorney documents from the leasing company if the vehicle is leased.
You’ll also sign a Financial Responsibility Statement confirming you carry Ohio’s minimum vehicle insurance. Everyone signs it, no exceptions.

A dealer’s documentation or “doc” fee is a separate charge covering their paperwork on the sale and title, so don’t confuse the two.
How Long It Lasts and How to Display It

The tag has to be displayed in plain view from the rear of the vehicle, either inside the rear window or on an external rear surface. Nothing can cover it or obscure it.6Ohio Legislative Service Commission. The Hardship Tag Is a Different Thing
Ohio also has a 30-day hardship temporary tag, but it isn’t a fallback for buyers who missed the deadline or forgot to register. The registrar of motor vehicles issues it at their discretion when someone has genuinely tried to comply with registration laws and faces extreme hardship, typically from title or documentation delays. It isn’t renewable or transferable either.3Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.182 – Temporary Motor Vehicle License Registration
If Your Temporary Tag Expires
Driving on an expired temp tag means driving an unregistered vehicle. Violating the temporary registration statute is a fourth-degree misdemeanor in Ohio.3Ohio Legislative Service Commission.
