How to Get Your California Baton Permit Online

To get a California baton permit online, you apply through the state’s BreEZe licensing portal after finishing an in-person baton training course at a facility licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). What You Need Before You Apply

The BreEZe application is short. Most of the work happens before you log in.

  • An active California Security Guard Registration (Guard Card). You cannot apply for a baton permit without one, and your guard registration must stay current for the baton permit to be usable.2Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Security Guard Registration

  • A completed baton training course at a BSIS-licensed facility, ending in a signed Certificate of Baton Qualification Training. The training is hands-on and cannot be done online.

If you already hold a Guard Card, your fingerprint-based background check through the California Department of Justice and the FBI is on file, and you do not repeat fingerprinting for the baton permit.4Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Save a scan of your training certificate before you sit down at the computer. You’ll upload it during the application, and the instructor’s name and BSIS license number on the certificate need to match what you enter on the form.

One quirk to know up front: BSIS has not yet built a fully digital form inside BreEZe, so you fill out a PDF, scan it, and attach it.   1. Sign in to BreEZe. If you registered for your Guard Card online, use the same account. If not, create one at the BreEZe site.

  4. Pay the $60 non-refundable application fee by credit card through the portal.

Once payment clears, your application drops straight into the review queue. That’s the main speed advantage over mailing paper, which has to pass through the BSIS cashiering office in West Sacramento before a reviewer ever sees it.

Avoiding the Most Common Rejections

Most bounced applications come down to inconsistencies between forms. Fill every field. Confirm that the instructor’s name and BSIS license number on the application match the training certificate exactly. Check that your guard registration number is current, not one from a prior lapsed registration. If any piece is off, BSIS sends the package back and you restart the review clock.

Fees and How Long It Takes

Your out-of-pocket cost for a first-time permit runs a little over the state fee once training is factored in.

As of early 2026, BSIS lists a processing time of roughly 75 days for online initial baton permit applications, and paper applications run longer.8Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Application Processing Times Some training schools advertise a four-to-six-week turnaround; the state’s own published timeframe is longer, so plan around the 75-day figure. You cannot carry a baton on duty until the physical permit is issued and your guard registration is active.

After You Submit

You can monitor your application status in BreEZe. Once approved, BSIS mails the permit card. Your authority to carry runs only while you’re on duty and while you’re traveling directly between home and your work site, and only while your guard registration stays current.9Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Renewal Comes Around Every Two Years

Baton permits expire two years from issuance.10California Legislative Information. California Business and Professions Code BPC 7584.5 Renewal requires retaking the full baton training course at a BSIS-approved facility within the six months before your expiration date, then filing the renewal in BreEZe with the $44 fee. If the permit expires before you renew, you cannot renew at all; you start over with a new initial application and pay the full $60. Put the expiration date on your calendar well ahead of time.

Carrying Without a Valid Permit

The permit is what makes carrying a baton at work legal in the first place. Business and Professions Code Section 7583.33 requires every guard who carries a baton on duty to hold a valid BSIS permit, and Penal Code Section 22210 makes unauthorized possession of a billy or similar instrument punishable by up to one year in county jail or a state prison term.11California Legislative Information.
