How to Get Your Georgia State Tax Transcript: Form, Methods, and Fees

To get a Georgia state tax transcript, submit Form RET-001 (Taxpayer Return Request) to the Georgia Department of Revenue online through the Georgia Tax Center, by mail, or in person at the Atlanta headquarters. Georgia doesn’t actually issue “transcripts”; it calls these documents copies of tax returns, but they serve the same verification purpose lenders, student loan servicers, and financial aid offices are asking for.1Department of Revenue. Start With Form RET-001

Every request runs on Form RET-001, downloadable from the Department of Revenue website.2Georgia Department of Revenue. Taxpayer Return Request Form RET-001 You’ll need to fill in:

  • Your Social Security Number, or a Federal Employer Identification Number for business returns.
  • The tax type: Individual, Corporate, Partnership, Sales and Use, Withholding, Composite, or Fiduciary.
  • The specific tax years or filing periods you want.
  • The name and address exactly as they appeared on the original return. If you’ve moved since filing, use the old address, not your current one.

Sign the form under penalty of perjury. If the return was a joint filing, your spouse signs too.2Georgia Department of Revenue. Taxpayer Return Request Form RET-001

Online Through the Georgia Tax Center

The Georgia Tax Center (GTC) is the fastest route. Creating an account requires that you’ve previously filed a Georgia individual income tax return; you’ll enter your SSN or ITIN along with the most recent Federal Adjusted Gross Income reported to Georgia, then set a username, password, and two-factor authentication.3Department of Revenue. Sign Up for Online Access with GTC If you’ve never filed a Georgia return, call the Department at (877) 423-6711 to arrange access.

Once you’re in, select “Request a Copy of a Return” from the dashboard, choose the account and periods you need, and submit. When the records are ready, the Department posts a notification to your electronic inbox inside the portal.

By Mail

You can mail the completed Form RET-001 with payment to the address printed on the form.1Department of Revenue. How to Request a Copy of a Tax Return The Department’s headquarters is at 2595 Century Parkway NE, Atlanta, GA 30345-3173.4Department of Revenue – Georgia.gov. Find a Main Office Mailed requests take longer than online ones, so plan around any lender or aid-office deadline. Because the form carries your Social Security Number, consider a tracked or secure mailing method.

In Person

Individual taxpayers can bring a request to the Century Center location in Atlanta by appointment. One boundary worth knowing: the regional Department of Revenue offices around the state handle return-copy requests only for business taxpayers.1Department of Revenue. How to Request a Copy of a Tax Return If you’re an individual and walk into a regional office expecting to file Form RET-001, you’ll be sent elsewhere. Even at the Atlanta office, staff confirm receipt; the actual processing still runs through the central office.

If Someone Else Is Requesting Your Records

The Department will not release your return to a third party without written authorization. Two forms cover this. Form RD-1061 (Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative) gives broader authority for a representative to act on your behalf. Form RD-1062 (Disclosure Authorization) grants narrower permission to receive confidential tax information.5Georgia Department of Revenue. Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative Form RD-1061

Attorneys, CPAs, registered public accountants, and IRS-enrolled agents can complete the Declaration of Representative section on Form RD-1061 in lieu of notarization. Anyone else acting as your representative must have the Power of Attorney acknowledged before a notary.5Georgia Department of Revenue. Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative Form RD-1061 Attach the completed authorization to your Form RET-001.

Records for a Deceased Taxpayer

Executors and administrators need to prove court appointment before the Department will release a deceased person’s returns. A copy of the will by itself isn’t enough.6Georgia Department of Revenue. Deceased Taxpayer Refund Check Claim Form Submit a death certificate, the court document appointing you (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration), Form RET-001, and any applicable Power of Attorney.

Fees and Processing Times

The Department charges a fee for return copies and requires payment with a mailed request; the current amount isn’t published on the general instruction page.1Department of Revenue. How to Request a Copy of a Tax Return Call (877) 423-6711 to confirm the fee before you send anything, particularly if you’re requesting several years at once.

Online submissions through the Georgia Tax Center process faster than mailed ones, though the Department doesn’t publish specific turnaround times for either. If a mortgage closing or financial aid deadline is bearing down on you, file online and call to follow up if the records don’t appear in your GTC inbox within a couple of weeks.
