To get your driver’s license back from a child support suspension in Georgia, you have to fix two things in order: clear the arrears situation with the Division of Child Support Services (DCSS), then pay a reinstatement fee to the Department of Driver Services (DDS). You don’t necessarily have to pay every dollar you owe first. DCSS offers four payment options, and meeting any one of them is enough to lift the suspension.
Step 1: Resolve the Arrears With DCSS
The suspension stays in place until DCSS tells DDS to release it. To trigger that release, you contact DCSS and sign an Enforcement Deferral under one of four payment options:
- Pay the entire past-due balance on all qualifying cases.
- Pay 20 percent of the total past-due balance on all qualifying cases.
- Pay three times the combined current support and past-due payments on all active qualifying cases.
- Pay the purge amount a judge ordered as a condition of clearing a contempt finding.

Step 2: Pay the DDS Reinstatement Fee
Clearing things up with DCSS is not the end. DDS still charges a separate reinstatement fee: $25 if you pay by mail, $35 if you pay in person at a DDS Customer Service Center. Before you assume you can drive again, confirm the release. Call the DDS Contact Center at 404-657-9300 to check that DCSS has officially notified them and that your record shows the suspension lifted.1Georgia Department of Human Services. Keep Driving While You Sort It Out: The Limited Driving Permit
If your license is currently suspended and you can’t yet meet a DCSS payment option, Georgia law allows you to apply for a limited driving permit. The permit lets you drive to and from work, school, medical appointments, court-ordered obligations, and other essential purposes.4Justia. For most people, this permit is what makes reinstatement realistic. You need the car to earn the income that funds the payment plan that lifts the suspension.
If You Genuinely Can’t Afford the Arrears
Two doors are still open if none of the four DCSS payment options is within reach.
Request an Administrative Hearing
If you received a Notice of Intent and haven’t yet been suspended, you can request an administrative hearing in writing within 20 days of the notice being mailed. You cannot argue at this hearing that the underlying support amount is unfair.
File a Modification Petition
If your income has dropped because of job loss, a medical setback, or another major change in circumstances, you can petition the court to modify the underlying child support order. You’ll need documentation: pay stubs, tax returns, evidence of the change. A word of warning that catches many people: filing for modification does not pause your existing obligation. You still owe the current order in full until a judge signs a new one, and arrears keep accruing in the meantime. If your income has dropped, file the petition immediately rather than waiting.

What Else the Same Suspension Affects
The 60-day delinquency trigger that suspended your driver’s license reaches other credentials too. Georgia law allows suspension or denial of any license issued to a delinquent parent, including licenses to conduct a trade, business, profession, or occupation, hunting and fishing licenses, and motor vehicle registrations.7Justia.
