When You Actually Need the N Endorsement
Michigan defines a tank vehicle as any commercial motor vehicle built to carry liquids or liquefied gases in bulk, using permanently mounted tanks or portable tanks rated at 1,000 gallons or more.1Michigan Department of State. Whether the tank is full, half-full, or nearly empty doesn’t change the answer, because sloshing liquid creates the same handling problem regardless.
Two situations sit outside the rule. A tank that only fuels the vehicle itself doesn’t trigger the endorsement. What You Need Before You Apply
You need a valid Michigan CDL in the correct vehicle group before adding N. Age depends on where you drive. Interstate work requires 21; intrastate-only drivers can hold a CDL at 18. Your driving record can block the endorsement. A license suspension or revocation within the prior 36 months disqualifies you, with limited exceptions for temporary medical issues or child support suspensions. A serious traffic conviction (six-point violation) in a commercial vehicle within the prior 24 months also blocks the application, and so does being listed on the National Driver Register or National Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse as disqualified.3Michigan Legislature. What the Knowledge Test Covers

Questions come from the Tank Vehicles section of the Michigan CDL manual. The core topic is liquid surge: when you brake or accelerate, the liquid inside a partially filled tank slams forward or back with real force, changing your stopping distance and how the truck handles. Baffled tanks use internal walls with holes to slow that wave, and the test expects you to know what baffles do and don’t fix. They reduce front-to-back surge. Expect questions on the high center of gravity that makes loaded tankers prone to rollovers, especially on turns and on-ramps. The manual also covers pre-trip inspection points for tank vehicles: checking for leaks, verifying valves and manholes are secure, and understanding emergency vent systems. Drivers who try to rely on general CDL knowledge tend to miss the surge and baffle questions.
Steps at the Secretary of State Office
Book an appointment first. Michigan’s Secretary of State offices handle CDL endorsements through the online scheduling portal, and while walk-ins are possible at some locations, the wait can be long.5Michigan Department of State. Applying for a Commercial Driver’s License
Bring your current Michigan CDL, your Medical Examiner’s Certificate if your self-certification requires one, and the completed CDL application form. You’ll take the 20-question test on a computer terminal at the office. Pass, and the clerk adds the endorsement on the spot.
The fee is $18 for a new photo license plus $5 for the endorsement, totaling $23. Enhanced CDL holders pay $33 for the photo license, bringing the total to $38.1Michigan Department of State. If You’ll Also Haul Hazmat
The N endorsement by itself covers non-hazardous cargo. If you’ll transport hazardous materials in a tank, you need both the tanker and hazmat endorsements, which Michigan combines into a single X endorsement rather than printing both letters separately.1Michigan Department of State. Keeping the Endorsement Current
Your N endorsement renews automatically when you renew your CDL. You’ll take a vision test and present a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate if you’re a non-excepted driver, but you won’t retake the tanker knowledge test.
