A Massachusetts LLC lookup takes about a minute through the Corporations Division’s free online search at corp.sec.state.ma.us. Type in a business name, a person’s name, or the state-issued ID number, and the portal returns the LLC’s formation date, current status, registered agent, members or managers, and every document it has filed with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
What You Can Search By
The portal offers four search methods, and picking the right one saves time:
- Entity name. The LLC’s legal name as filed. You can search for names that begin with, contain, or exactly match your text.
- Individual name. A manager, member, or organizer connected to the LLC. Useful when you know a person but not the business name.
- Identification number. The unique number the state assigned at formation or registration.
- Filing number. A number tied to a specific document the LLC submitted.
If you have the exact legal name, use it. LLCs often register under names that differ slightly from how they operate day to day, so a “contains” search catches more variations than “begins with.” Misspellings in the original filing happen more often than you would think, and a partial match will pick those up too.
Running the Search
Open the search portal at corp.sec.state.ma.us/corpweb/corpsearch/CorpSearch.aspx. Radio buttons at the top let you pick a search method. Choose one, type in your terms, and click search.
The results list every entity that matches, showing each one’s name and ID number. Common names produce long lists. Find the exact one you want and click the hyperlinked ID number on the left to open the full entity summary.
Empty result? Loosen the query. Switch to “contains,” drop words like “LLC” or “The,” or try a shorter fragment of the name.
What the Entity Summary Shows
The summary page is where the useful information lives. At the top you get the LLC’s full legal name and the date its certificate of organization was filed. Every Massachusetts LLC must file that certificate with the Secretary of the Commonwealth, and the filing date is when the entity legally came into existence.1General Court of Massachusetts. Below that, you will see the principal office address and the name and address of the registered agent. The agent is the person or company authorized to accept legal documents on the LLC’s behalf. If you need to serve a lawsuit or send formal notice, this is where it goes.
The page also lists current managers or members with their addresses. Massachusetts requires member names in formation documents, so ownership information sits in the public record. The addresses may be a business office or the registered agent’s address rather than a home.
Further down is a chronological list of every document the LLC has filed: annual reports, amendments, and anything else submitted to the Corporations Division. Why the Status Field Matters Most
Every listing includes a status. Read it first. An LLC marked “active” or “in good standing” has kept up with its filings. Any other status is a signal worth understanding before you sign a contract, wire money, or accept a check from that company.

A dissolved LLC is not just a paperwork problem. During dissolution the entity is generally limited to winding down its affairs. Anyone who keeps doing business in the LLC’s name risks personal liability for debts run up in that period. The LLC may lose the ability to bring or maintain lawsuits, and if another business grabs the name during the gap, it can be lost for good.
Reinstatement is available at any time. The LLC applies to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, shows that the grounds for dissolution have been corrected, and confirms its name still meets state requirements.5General Court of Massachusetts. That relation-back is not guaranteed in every situation, so a dissolved status on a search result is a real reason to pause.
When the Free Search Is Not Enough
The online lookup handles basic due diligence: confirming the LLC exists, checking who runs it, and verifying its status. Some situations call for an official document with the state’s seal. Banks often require one to open a business account. Courts want authenticated records as evidence. Other states may require proof of good standing before they will register your LLC as a foreign entity.
Massachusetts issues two documents that come up most often:

The difference matters. A Certificate of Existence proves formation; only the Certificate of Good Standing proves the LLC is current on its obligations. If a bank or court asks for good standing, the $12 version will not satisfy them.
