To look up an Ohio LLC, use the Secretary of State’s free Business Search at the Ohio Business Central portal (bsportal.ohiosos.gov) and enter either the company’s legal name or its Ohio charter number.1Secretary of State Office. No account, login, or fee is required for a basic Ohio LLC lookup.
What You Need Before You Search
One of two things gets you to a specific entity: the LLC’s formal legal name, or its charter number. The charter number is a multi-digit code assigned when the company first filed with the state. If you have it, typing it into the charter number field pulls up the exact entity and skips the list of similar names. If you only have the business name, the search still works, though you may need to scroll through results for a common word.

Starting With vs. Exact Match
A dropdown on the search page controls how the database matches what you type. Two options matter.
Starting With returns every entity whose name begins with your input. It’s the better choice when you’re unsure of the full legal name or you want to browse variations. Typing “Buckeye” pulls back Buckeye Construction LLC, Buckeye Dental Group Inc., and everything else that starts with the word.
Exact Match returns only entities whose names match your input character for character. Use this when you know the precise legal name and want a fast confirmation, or when you’re checking whether a specific name is already registered.
What the Results Tell You
Each entry displays the fields that matter for verifying a company. The status line reads Active, Canceled, or Dead. Active means the LLC is in good standing with the state. Canceled means the Secretary of State revoked its authority to do business, often for failing to maintain a statutory agent. Dead generally indicates a formal dissolution.
The formation date is the day the articles of organization were originally filed, which tells you how long the LLC has existed. The entity type shows whether the company is a domestic LLC (formed in Ohio) or a foreign LLC (formed elsewhere but registered to operate in Ohio).3Ohio Secretary of State. Search
The statutory agent listing is more useful than most people realize. Ohio uses the term “statutory agent” for what other states call a registered agent; the role is the same.4Ohio Secretary of State. It also works as a quick health check: a company without a valid statutory agent on file is at risk of cancellation or may already be canceled.
If the Search Shows a Canceled Status
When the Secretary of State finds that an LLC no longer has a valid statutory agent, the office sends a notice giving the company 30 days to appoint a new one. If nothing is filed in that window, the articles are canceled and the LLC loses its authority to do business in Ohio. Reinstatement is possible, but it has a hard deadline. Ohio requires the filing within two years of cancellation; after that, the cancellation is permanent.6Ohio Secretary of State. Reinstatement Limitations
For an LLC canceled for lack of a statutory agent, reinstatement uses Form 525A. The form asks for the LLC’s entity number, the name and address of a new statutory agent, the agent’s signed acceptance, and the signature of at least one person authorized by the LLC. Checking Whether a Name Is Available
Many people running an Ohio LLC lookup aren’t researching an existing company. They want to know if a name is free for a new business. The same search answers that, with a few things to keep in mind.
Ohio requires every new LLC name to be “distinguishable upon the records” from existing active business names on file. The comparison isn’t limited to other LLCs. Reserving a Name You’ve Cleared
If the name is available and you aren’t ready to file articles of organization yet, you can hold it. Ohio takes name reservations through Ohio Business Central or on Form 534B. The fee is $39 online or $25 by paper.10Ohio Secretary of State. Filing Forms and Fee Schedule The reservation blocks anyone else from registering the name while you finish your formation paperwork.
Getting Official Documents After a Lookup
A search gives you information on screen, but it doesn’t give you something you can hand to a bank or file with a court. For that, order a certified copy or a Certificate of Full Force and Effect (Ohio’s version of what most states call a Certificate of Good Standing). - Level 1, $100, processed within two business days.
- Level 2, $200, processed within one business day.
- Level 3, $300, processed within four business hours.
