To look up a traffic ticket in Michigan online, use the Michigan Courts ePAY portal, which lets you search participating district courts by last name and ticket number, last name and date of birth, driver’s license number, or license plate.1Michigan Courts. Ticket / Case Search – Payable Ticket Search Page If the court that issued your citation is not on ePAY, that court’s own website or clerk’s office is your next stop. Most civil infraction tickets show up within a few business days of the stop.
What to Have Ready Before You Search
You will get faster, more reliable results if you gather a few identifiers first:
- The ticket or case number printed on the citation.
- Your driver’s license number.
- Your full legal name and date of birth as they appear on your license.
- The license plate number of the vehicle you were driving.
Having more than one on hand matters. A typo in a name field can block a search that the ticket number or license number would have found instantly.
Using the Michigan Courts ePAY Portal
ePAY is the statewide search-and-pay site for civil infraction tickets. Pick one of the four search combinations, choose the issuing court from the dropdown, and the system will pull up your citation if that court participates. Coverage includes courts in Genesee, Hillsdale, Ingham, Kalamazoo, Kent, Marquette, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties, among others.1Michigan Courts. Not every district court is on the platform. If your court is not in the dropdown, ePAY cannot see your ticket, and you will need to check that court directly.
Searching an Individual Court’s Website
Many district courts run their own case-lookup tools. The 36th District Court in Detroit, for example, has a case inquiry system that displays records from the last seven years and accepts either a name or a case number.236th District Court. Register of Action – Search If you know which court has jurisdiction, going straight to its site can sometimes surface a record that has not yet posted to ePAY.
Jurisdiction follows location. Traffic citations are filed in the district court that covers the spot where the stop occurred.3Michigan Courts. Michigan Court Rules of 1985 Chapter 4 – District Court If a stop happened near a county line, the ticket may sit with the neighboring county’s court rather than the one you assumed.
How Long Before a New Ticket Appears
A citation issued yesterday probably will not show up yet. Courts generally need three to five business days to enter a new ticket, and some portals can take up to seven.4Kent County, MI. Traffic / Civil Infractions If your first search returns nothing, wait five business days and try again before assuming something is wrong.
When Online Search Doesn’t Work
Call or visit the district court that handles your ticket. The court’s name and phone number are printed on the citation itself. If you no longer have the ticket, contact information for every Michigan district court is available through the Michigan Courts website.
Have your name, date of birth, and ticket number ready when you call. A clerk can confirm your fine, any scheduled court date, and your response deadline. Walking into the courthouse works too. Bring your driver’s license, and a clerk can pull the record up on the spot.
If you have lost the physical ticket and cannot find yourself online, the law enforcement agency that stopped you is another option. The officer filed a copy with the court and can often confirm which court received it and what the case number is.
What Your Ticket Record Will Show
Once you locate the record, expect to see:
- The specific violation, along with the date and location of the stop.
- The fine and costs. Michigan civil infractions generally carry a fine of up to $100 plus up to $100 in court costs and a $40 justice system assessment, with certain offenses set higher. - Your response deadline. For civil infractions, you generally have 14 days from the date of the citation to respond.6Thirty First District Court, MI. I Received A Ticket
- Whether a court appearance is required or already scheduled.

Point values run from two to six. Speeding six to ten mph over is two points, sixteen or more over is four, running a stop sign or red light is three, and the most serious violations such as reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, and operating under the influence are six.7State of Michigan. One boundary worth knowing: if your citation is a misdemeanor rather than a civil infraction (reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, operating under the influence), the record will usually show a scheduled court date instead of a simple pay-or-contest deadline. The lookup steps are the same; the response is not.
Why the Deadline on Your Record Matters
The reason to look up the ticket promptly is that the clock starts on the date of the citation, not the date you find the record. Miss the response window on a civil infraction and the court enters a default judgment: you are automatically found responsible, the full fine and costs are imposed, and the conviction and points are reported to the Secretary of State.8Michigan Courts. If the amount is still unpaid 56 days after it is due, a late penalty of 20% of the outstanding balance is added. Courts must warn you about this penalty, and a judge can waive it if you ask.9Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws MCL 600.4803
The bigger risk is your license. When you fail to appear or fail to comply with a court order on a traffic matter, the court mails you a notice giving you 14 days to fix it. If you still do not respond, the court notifies the Secretary of State and your license is suspended.10Michigan Legislature. Fixing Common Search Problems
Timing is the usual culprit. If it has been fewer than five business days since the stop, the ticket may simply not be in the system yet.
Typos are next. Check every character in the ticket number and every letter of your name against your license. A hyphenated last name is worth trying both with and without the hyphen. A single wrong digit in a date of birth is enough to block a match.
Wrong court is the third possibility. If you searched a court and got nothing, think again about exactly where the stop happened and try the district court for that location, or call either court’s clerk to confirm where the citation was filed.
