How to Order an Alaska Birth Certificate Online

You can order an Alaska birth certificate online through VitalChek, the only electronic vendor the state has authorized.1State of Alaska | Department of Health. Vital Records Orders Orders placed this way are typically processed in two to three weeks, compared to two to three months for mail or fax. The Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS) within the Alaska Department of Health holds every birth record for events that occurred in the state, and VitalChek simply passes your request to that office.

Who Can Order

Alaska does not release birth certificates to the general public. Under 7 AAC 05.925, the applicant must have a direct interest in the record and need it to establish a personal or property right.2Cornell Law Institute. Alaska Code 7 AAC 05.925 – Limited Disclosure The state’s request form narrows that down to a short list of qualifying requesters:3Alaska Department of Health. Alaska Birth Certificate Request Form

  • Any parent listed on the current certificate.
  • The person named on the certificate, if they are at least 14 and can show a current school ID or other valid identification.
  • Legal guardians, with certified guardianship papers.
  • Third parties, with a notarized letter of consent from the person named on the certificate or their legal guardian.
  • Attorneys and government agencies, with a letter on official letterhead identifying who they represent and why the record is needed, plus supporting certified or notarized documentation.

Birth records become public 100 years after the date of birth. After that, anyone can request a copy without proving eligibility.1State of Alaska | Department of Health. Vital Records Orders

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Gather the following details about the person named on the record before you open the VitalChek form:3Alaska Department of Health. Alaska Birth Certificate Request Form

  • Full name as it appears on the record (first, middle, last).
  • Date of birth.
  • City or village where the birth occurred.
  • Each parent’s name prior to marriage (first, middle, last).

You will also upload a government-issued photo ID. HAVRS accepts a driver’s license or state ID, passport, military ID, tribal or BIA card with a photo, or a school ID.3Alaska Department of Health. Ordering Through VitalChek

Go to VitalChek and select Alaska. Enter the biographical details for the person on the record, upload a digital image of your photo ID, and pay with a credit or debit card. Review every field before submitting, because a misspelled name or wrong date of birth can send staff searching for a record that doesn’t exist under those details. You should receive an email confirmation once the order goes through.

Be careful about which site you use. HAVRS warns that other companies advertising birth certificate services often charge inflated fees to fill out the same form, and VitalChek is the only third-party vendor the state actually works with.1State of Alaska | Department of Health. What It Costs

Alaska charges $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time.3Alaska Department of Health. VitalChek adds its own service fee on top of the state charge. The state does not publish the exact amount, but the full total appears on the VitalChek checkout page before you pay.1State of Alaska | Department of Health. Vital Records Orders

Processing and Shipping Time

Online orders through VitalChek generally take two to three weeks to process, not counting shipping.1State of Alaska | Department of Health. Vital Records Orders Peak seasons can push that longer. Expedited processing is only offered through VitalChek, so if you need a certificate fast for a passport application, enrollment deadline, or similar reason, the online route is the practical choice.3Alaska Department of Health. When the Online Order Isn’t the Right Tool

VitalChek handles standard copies of existing records. A few related needs go elsewhere.

If your certificate has an error, or if you need an amendment involving paternity or adoption, contact HAVRS directly. Those amendments have a standard processing time of three months and cannot be expedited.3Alaska Department of Health. If the birth was never registered, Alaska allows delayed registration. The state registrar may require an affidavit from someone with knowledge of the birth or acceptable documentary evidence of the date and place.4Cornell Law Institute. Alaska Code 7 AAC 05.810 – Delayed Certificate

If you need the certificate recognized in another country, an apostille or certificate of authority has to be added by the Lieutenant Governor’s office, not HAVRS or VitalChek. The fee is $5 per document, and you must mail an original certified birth certificate with a wet signature; photocopies are not accepted.5Office of the Lt. Governor.
