To pass the California CCW range qualification, you have to draw each handgun you want listed on your permit from a concealed carry position and place the required percentage of rounds inside the scoring ring at a series of set distances, using the course of fire your local sheriff or police chief has published. There is no single statewide test. Round counts, passing scores, distances, and time limits are all set by the licensing agency issuing your permit, so the first real step is pulling your agency’s published standards and training to those numbers.
What the Course of Fire Looks Like
Expect somewhere between about 35 and 72 rounds per firearm. The City of Morgan Hill uses a 35-round qualification.1City of Morgan Hill. Rounds are fired from multiple distances. Common yard lines are 3, 5, 7, and 15 yards.1City of Morgan Hill. Every string starts with the handgun concealed. The firearm must be fully hidden from view at the beep or command, and you draw from that position before firing.1City of Morgan Hill. The Passing Score You Need
Passing percentages vary widely. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department requires 70% of rounds to land inside the 7-ring at each distance.2Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. When you pass, your instructor issues a certificate listing the specific firearms you qualified with, your scores, and the course of fire used. That certificate goes into your application package.
Every Handgun Qualifies Separately
Each handgun you want listed on the permit runs its own qualification. You cannot qualify with one pistol and add others to the license later without shooting them.3LAPD Online. Each handgun must be registered to you in California’s system. The licensing agency will verify that the make, model, caliber, and serial number match across your Dealer’s Record of Sale, the Automated Firearms System, your shooting proficiency form, and your certificate of completion. Adding or removing a firearm from an existing permit later requires a fresh qualification with that specific handgun.
What to Bring
Bring the holster you actually intend to carry with. Since every string begins concealed, the firearm has to be fully hidden at the start.1City of Morgan Hill. The instructor will inspect each firearm to confirm it is “reasonably concealable,” which in practice means standard-size handguns. Laser sights, night sights, and red-dot optics are generally permitted. Some agencies require red-dot slides to be factory-machined or pre-cut from the manufacturer rather than aftermarket-milled.5Town of Fairfax. How the Qualification Fits Into the Training Course
The live-fire test happens inside a training course of at least 16 hours for new applicants, 8 hours for renewals.6California Legislative Information. California Penal Code 26165 The full course, including the range portion, must be run by a Department of Justice certified firearms instructor.
Timing matters. Your completed qualification has to fall within six months before you submit your application, or before your current license expires if you’re renewing. Miss that window and you’ll have to redo it.

Meeting the state minimum is meaningless if your agency demands more, and moving across a county or city line can put you in front of an entirely different course of fire.
If You Fail
Failing the marksmanship portion usually is not the end. Most instructors offer a retest of the failed portion, with the details depending on the instructor and agency policy. Plan on an additional fee for the extra range time.
A safety violation is different. A negligent discharge, muzzling another person, or fundamentally unsafe handling ends the course immediately, with no retest. Fees already paid to the instructor and the issuing agency are not refundable.
If you did not pass the shoot, book private coaching before you try again. The course of fire is not technically difficult for someone who shoots regularly, but the draw from concealment, the clock at closer yard lines, and the pass/fail pressure catch people off guard. Dry-fire practice at home — drawing, presenting, and pressing the trigger on an empty chamber — is the cheapest way to fix most of what fails people.
Renewal Qualifications
A standard CCW license is valid for up to two years.7California Department of Justice.
