To pass the Kentucky written permit test, you need to answer at least 80 percent of its 40 multiple-choice questions correctly, with both the traffic rules portion and the road signs portion clearing that threshold on their own.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Kentucky Driver Manual The Kentucky State Police administers the test at regional driver licensing offices, and every question is pulled directly from the Kentucky Driver Manual. Study the manual, book an appointment, and plan to pass on the first try.
What the Test Looks Like
Forty questions, multiple choice, on a computer or tablet at the testing office. The content splits into two parts: driving rules and road signs.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Kentucky Driver Manual You need 80 percent correct overall, which works out to 32 right answers, and each portion has to meet that standard independently. A strong score on rules will not rescue a weak score on signs.
The computer tells you your result the moment you finish the last question. Pass, and the office can issue your permit the same visit.
What the Test Covers
The rules questions pull from the situations the Driver Manual walks through: right-of-way at intersections, signaling, speed limits, parking regulations, school bus safety procedures, and what to do when emergency vehicles approach. These are the questions you can often reason through if you understand the underlying rule, even if the exact scenario is new to you.
The signs questions are different. You have to identify signs by shape and color alone, without relying on text, and you have to tell regulatory signs from warning signs from guide signs. There is no reasoning your way around an unfamiliar shape, which is why this portion fails more applicants than the rules portion does.
How to Study
Read the Kentucky Driver Manual cover to cover. It is free to download from the Kentucky State Police website and from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet site, and every test question comes from it.2Kentucky State Police. Spend extra time on the signs chapter. Make yourself name each sign by shape and color before you read the caption. Octagon, inverted triangle, pennant, diamond, pentagon, round, horizontal rectangle, vertical rectangle: each shape carries meaning on its own, and the test will ask you to know it. For the rules portion, focus on the specific numbers (speed limits in different zones, following distances, BAC thresholds) and on the sequences that are easy to blur, like the order of actions at a four-way stop or around a stopped school bus.
If English is not your first language, the test is available in more than 25 languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, Vietnamese, Somali, Burmese, and Russian.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Kentucky Driver Manual Several run inside the testing software; others require advance arrangement. Audio versions and sign language interpreters are available for applicants with disabilities, and oral testing is an option for applicants who cannot read, though you still have to identify signs from your own knowledge.2Kentucky State Police. What Do I Need to Apply Forwarded mail does not count. Since May 2025, REAL ID is required to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities, so most applicants will want that version.

Public and private school students get the form from their school. Without it, the office will not process your application.6Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. No Pass/No Drive Law (HB 32)

A vision screening is part of the visit, and the standard is 20/40 in the better eye. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them. Corrective lenses can get you to the standard, but acuity worse than 20/60 triggers a referral to a vision specialist.
If You Fail
You can come back the next available day and try again.8Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. First Issuance There is no cap on attempts, but each one needs a new appointment. Do not rush back. Go to the sections of the manual that gave you trouble, work through them again, and schedule the retake once you have actually closed the gap. The signs portion especially rewards extra study, since the answers are either right or wrong with no room to guess your way through.
After You Pass: What the Permit Lets You Do
Passing the test gets you a learner’s permit, not a license. Every time you drive, a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old has to be in the front passenger seat beside you. No exceptions, no short trips without one.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Kentucky Driver Manual Keep the physical permit on you behind the wheel; driving without it is its own violation.
If you are under 18, more rules apply:
- No driving between midnight and 6:00 a.m. unless you have good cause, such as a work schedule, school activity, or emergency.9Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Graduated Driver Licensing Program
- Only one unrelated passenger under 20 is allowed in the vehicle.
- Zero tolerance for alcohol. Any BAC of 0.02 or above is a violation, so the practical rule is none.
- A moving violation or permit restriction violation adds at least 180 extra days before you can apply for an intermediate license.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Kentucky Driver Manual
Applicants under 18 must hold the permit at least 180 days before taking the road skills test. Applicants 18 and older follow the same written test and the same supervising-driver rule, but the holding period before the road test is only 30 days.8Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. First Issuance
