How to Pass the Tennessee Learner’s Permit Test

The Tennessee learner’s permit test is a 30-question multiple-choice knowledge exam on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving, and you pass by answering at least 24 correctly, an 80 percent score.¹ You also have to clear a vision screening before you sit down at the testing station. Study the state driver manual, bring the right documents, and the test itself is manageable.

Who Can Apply

You must be at least 15 years old.² If you are under 18, you also need proof that you are enrolled in school and attending regularly. Tennessee ties driving privileges to education, and the state can deny or revoke a permit for truancy.

Documents to Bring

Showing up without the right paperwork is one of the most common reasons people leave without a permit. Check every category before you go.

Proof of Citizenship or Lawful Presence

Bring one document proving U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence. Common options include a certified U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, a certificate of naturalization, or a permanent resident card.³

Social Security Number and Two Proofs of Residency

You need your Social Security number and two separate documents showing you live in Tennessee. Utility bills, bank statements, vehicle registrations, voter registration cards, and insurance policies are all accepted. For most items, “current” means dated within the last four months.⁴

Extra Forms If You Are Under 18

Minors need two additional forms. The first is a Certificate of Compulsory School Attendance (Form SF-1010), signed by a school principal or guidance counselor. It expires 30 days after signing, so don’t get it too early. During summer break, it can be dated within the last 30 days of the spring semester.⁵

The second is the Minor/Teenage Affidavit and Cancellation form (Form SF-0259). A parent, stepparent at the same address, or legal guardian signs it and accepts financial responsibility for the minor’s driving.⁶ Written parental approval for the permit itself is also required by state law.² The forms are available at any Driver Services Center and on the Department of Safety website.

What the Test Covers

Thirty multiple-choice questions, drawn from the topics below. You need 24 right.¹

Road signs: shapes, colors, and meanings. A yellow diamond warns; a red octagon stops. You are expected to identify signs by shape alone, as if the text were unreadable.
Right-of-way rules at intersections, roundabouts, and pedestrian crossings.
Pavement markings: solid lines, dashed lines, and colored curb markings.
Safe following distances, especially in poor weather.
Impaired driving laws, including implied consent.
Parking rules, including where parking is prohibited and how to park on hills.

These are not trick questions, but they test details that people skip when studying. The difference between a flashing red and a flashing yellow light, or the exact distance you must park from a fire hydrant, shows up regularly.

How to Study

The single best resource is the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual from the Department of Safety. It covers every topic on the exam. Pick up a printed copy at any Driver Services Center or download the PDF from tn.gov/safety.⁷

Give extra attention to the road signs section. Many people breeze through text-based rules but stumble on sign identification, especially regulatory signs they see every day without thinking about. The manual has color-coded pages showing every sign you could be asked about. Read the manual at least twice, and on the second pass, quiz yourself on any section where you hesitated.

Test Day

Schedule an appointment through the Tennessee Department of Safety’s online booking portal.⁸ Select “Driver License Appointment,” then choose “Knowledge Test” as your service. You need a valid email address and phone number to complete the booking. Arrive at least 15 minutes early; if you are late, your appointment may be canceled and you will be treated as a walk-in. Some locations do take walk-ins, but appointment holders go first, and the wait can be long.

Vision Screening First

Before you touch the knowledge test, you take a vision screening. You need at least 20/40 acuity in each eye, tested separately and together, with or without glasses or contacts.⁹ Fail it and you receive a standard vision statement to take to an optometrist or ophthalmologist; you cannot take the knowledge test that day and will need to return with corrective lenses that bring you to 20/40.¹⁰ Bring your glasses or contacts if you use them. Passing with corrective lenses puts a restriction on your permit requiring you to wear them while driving.

Fees

The learner permit fee is $10.50 for applicants under 18 and $5.50 for those 18 and older.¹¹ At a County Clerk Partner location, expect an added $4.00 administrative fee on top of the permit fee. Most locations accept cash, checks, and credit cards.

After You Pass

Once you clear both the vision screening and the knowledge test, you receive a temporary paper permit on the spot. It is legally valid for driving under the required supervision. Your permanent hard-copy card is mailed to the address on your application. Carry the temporary permit whenever you drive until the card arrives.

If You Fail

You have to wait at least 24 hours before retaking the knowledge test. Tennessee offers an online version, but only two online attempts are allowed. After that, you take the test in person at a Driver Services Center.¹ Use the wait to go back through the manual and focus on the topics where you were weakest.

What the Permit Lets You Do

A learner permit is not a regular license. The restrictions are strict, and breaking them can carry penalties and delay your next license.

Take the 21-year-old supervisor requirement seriously. Getting pulled over without one turns a routine stop into a much bigger problem.
