What to Have Ready
The non-login payment flow moves quickly if you gather a few things first:
- Your Social Security Number (or FEIN if you’re paying as a non-individual entity).3Illinois Department of Revenue. What is MyTax Illinois and How Do I Access It
- Your prior-year adjusted gross income, which the portal uses to verify identity.
- The routing and account numbers for the checking or savings account you’ll draw from.
- The dollar amount you’re paying for the quarter.
These are the same figures you’d write on a paper Form IL-1040-ES voucher.4Illinois Department of Revenue. IL-1040-ES Estimated Income Tax Payments for Individuals 2026 When you pay online, no paper voucher needs to be mailed.
Walking Through the Online Payment
From the MyTax Illinois homepage, the “Make an IL-1040, IL-1040-ES, or IL-505-I payment” link opens the non-login payment function.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Non-Login Functions The screens that follow ask you to:
- Select the tax type (estimated individual income tax) and the correct tax period.
- Enter your SSN, name, and address.
- Enter the payment amount for the quarter.
- Enter your bank routing and account numbers.
- Review the information and authorize the payment.
Once you submit, the system produces a confirmation code. Copy it or screenshot it before you close the tab.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Non-Login Functions The effective date is the day you submit, so a payment sent on the deadline counts as on time even though the money usually leaves your bank account two or three business days later.
Paying by Credit or Debit Card Instead
Illinois accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, but through third-party processors that charge convenience fees the state does not receive.5Illinois Department of Revenue. Pay by Credit Card As of 2026, the posted fees include:
- payILtax (Catalis): 2.25% for credit cards (minimum $3.75), or $3.75 flat for debit cards under $400.
- ACI Payments: 2.25% for credit and debit cards (minimum $2.50).
- Link2Gov (FIS): 2.35% to 2.49% for credit and debit cards (minimum $2.79).
On a $2,000 quarterly payment, a 2.25% fee adds $45 in cost. Unless card rewards or a short-term float justify it, ACH from a bank account is free and preferable.
The Four Quarterly Deadlines
Illinois follows a quarterly schedule:2Illinois Department of Revenue. Pub-105 Estimated Payments Requirements for Individuals and Businesses
- April 15 for the first quarter.
- June 15 for the second quarter.
- September 15 for the third quarter.
- January 15 of the following year for the fourth quarter.
When a deadline falls on a weekend or state-recognized holiday, it shifts to the next business day. Fiscal-year filers shift each date to match their tax year. The quarters aren’t evenly spaced: only two months between the first and second payments, but four months between the third and fourth. Budget for that.
Confirming the Payment Actually Posted
Save the confirmation code first. Then check your bank statement within a few days to see the withdrawal. If you have a MyTax Illinois account, log in after a few business days and confirm the payment shows on your ledger.
If the funds haven’t left your account after three business days, contact your bank. If the bank shows the money left but MyTax Illinois doesn’t reflect the payment, call the Illinois Department of Revenue. Fixing a misapplied payment now is much simpler than untangling it when you file.
Do You Actually Have to Pay Estimated Taxes
You’re required to make quarterly estimated payments if your Illinois income tax liability for the year will exceed $1,000 after withholding and eligible credits.6Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 5/803 Freelancers, independent contractors, landlords, retirees with taxable income, and people with large investment gains are the ones who most often cross that line. Illinois uses a flat 4.95% rate, which makes the estimate straightforward.7Illinois Department of Revenue. 2026 Booklet IL-700-T Illinois Withholding Tax Tables
You avoid an underpayment penalty by paying at least the lesser of 90% of your current-year tax or 100% of your prior-year tax, provided the prior year covered a full 12 months.8Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 5/804 The prior-year figure is the easier target when your income swings, because you already know it. Credits that count toward reducing your liability for this calculation include tax paid to other states, the Illinois property tax credit, education expense credits, the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Pass-Through Entity Tax Credit.9Illinois Department of Revenue. If at least two-thirds of your gross income comes from farming, the estimated payment requirement doesn’t apply to you.6Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 5/803
Miss the safe harbors and Illinois charges interest on the shortfall, computed separately for each quarterly installment. The current underpayment interest rate is 7% annually through June 30, 2026.10Illinois Department of Revenue. Interest Rates A shortfall on the April payment accrues longer than one on the January payment, so paying earlier when you can costs less if you end up short overall.
Adjusting Payments for Uneven Income
The quarterly system assumes income arrives evenly through the year, and for consultants, real estate agents, and anyone with seasonal work, it doesn’t. Recalculate your estimate before each deadline using your latest income numbers. If income dropped, cut the next payment. If it spiked, raise it. There’s no penalty for adjusting mid-year as long as your total payments by January 15 satisfy one of the safe harbors.
If most of your income lands late in the year, the annualized income installment method (federal Form 2210, Schedule AI) lets you show your payments matched when the income was actually earned. Illinois follows the same general framework, and using this method can reduce or eliminate a penalty that would otherwise attach to small early-quarter payments.
