How to Pay Illinois Taxes Online: MyTax, Deadlines, and Penalties

To pay Illinois taxes online, use MyTax Illinois, the Department of Revenue’s free portal at mytax.illinois.gov. You can send an individual income tax payment, estimated payment, or extension payment directly from a checking or savings account without creating an account, and the state charges nothing for that direct transfer. If you’d rather pay by credit or debit card, Illinois authorizes three third-party processors, each of which charges its own convenience fee.

For most people that’s the IL-1040 (individual income tax); corporations use the IL-1120.2Illinois Department of Revenue. First Time Filers

For a routine estimated or return payment with no letter, you can still pay as a guest using the non-login option on the MyTax Illinois homepage.3Illinois Department of Revenue. For a direct bank payment, have your bank’s nine-digit routing number and your account number ready. Both appear on paper checks and inside your bank’s online portal. Paying by card skips the bank details but adds a processing fee.

Paying by Credit or Debit Card

Illinois authorizes three third-party card processors. Each charges its own convenience fee, which is not refundable, and the state receives none of it.

  • ACI Payments, Inc.: 2.25% of the payment amount, $2.50 minimum, credit or debit.
  • payILtax (Catalis): debit cards, a flat $3.75 or 1% if the payment is $400 or more; credit cards, 2.25% with a $3.75 minimum.
  • Link2Gov (FIS): 2.35% to 2.49% of the payment amount, $2.79 minimum, credit or debit.

On a $5,000 tax bill, even the lowest credit card rate adds about $112 in fees.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Pay by Credit Card If you can pay from a bank account, the ACH route through MyTax Illinois is free. The card option makes sense mainly when you need to pay immediately without the checking balance to cover it, or when rewards clearly outweigh the fee.

Key Deadline for 2026

The deadline to file and pay your 2025 Illinois individual income tax return is April 15, 2026.5Illinois.gov. Estimated Quarterly Payments

If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in Illinois income tax for 2026 after withholding and credits, you’re required to make quarterly estimated payments.7Illinois Department of Revenue. IL-1040-ES Estimated Income Tax Payments for Individuals 2026 This mostly affects self-employed taxpayers, freelancers, landlords, and anyone with meaningful income not covered by employer withholding.

The 2026 due dates are:

  • First quarter: April 15, 2026
  • Second quarter: June 15, 2026
  • Third quarter: September 15, 2026
  • Fourth quarter: January 15, 2027

You can pay the full estimated amount on April 15 or split it into four equal installments.7Illinois Department of Revenue. Late Payment Penalties and Interest

Illinois applies a tiered penalty for tax that was due but not paid on time:

  • 1 to 30 days late: 2% of the unpaid amount.
  • 31 or more days late: 10% of the unpaid amount.
  • After an audit begins: 15% on any amount still unpaid.
  • After an audit concludes: 20% on any amount not paid within 30 days of the final determination.

Those percentages stack quickly.9Illinois Department of Revenue. Pub-103 Penalties and Interest for Illinois Taxes On top of the penalty, the Department of Revenue charges interest at the underpayment rate, 7% annually through at least June 30, 2026. The rate is adjusted twice a year based on the federal underpayment rate.8Illinois Department of Revenue. Interest Rates

If your electronic payment bounces for insufficient funds, the state adds a flat $25 penalty per dishonored transaction on top of any late-payment penalty.9Illinois Department of Revenue. Pub-103 Penalties and Interest for Illinois Taxes Check your balance before you authorize.

If You Can’t Pay in Full

The Department of Revenue offers installment agreements through MyTax Illinois. You must have filed every required return through the current date to qualify, and all outstanding balances get rolled into a single plan.10Illinois Department of Revenue. Payment Plan

The fastest path is the pre-approved plan MyTax Illinois presents to you; accepting the terms produces immediate approval. You can also request customized terms, but that route goes to the Department’s collections staff and takes longer. If your total balance including penalties and interest exceeds $15,000, you’ll need to submit a financial disclosure form, EG-13-I for individuals or EG-13-B for businesses, with the request.10Illinois Department of Revenue. Payment Plan Interest keeps accruing on the unpaid balance during the plan, so paying as much as you can upfront saves money.

When Electronic Payment Is Required

Most individual taxpayers can choose between electronic and paper. Illinois requires electronic payment once annual liability reaches these thresholds:

  • Individual income tax: $200,000 or more in annual liability.
  • Business income tax and sales tax: $20,000 or more in annual liability.
  • Withholding tax: $12,000 or more in annual liability.

Several tax types require electronic payment regardless of amount, including cigarette tax stamps, motor fuel tax, and cannabis-related taxes.12Illinois Department of Revenue. Who Must Make Electronic Payments Below those thresholds, paying online is still faster and more reliable, but it isn’t mandatory.
