How to Pay Indiana State Taxes: Online, Mail, and In Person

There are three ways to pay Indiana state taxes: online through the state’s INTIME portal, by mail with a check or money order, or in person at a Department of Revenue district office. Individual income tax returns and any balance owed for the 2025 tax year are due April 15, 2026. Indiana’s flat state income tax rate is 2.95% for 2026, and most residents also owe a county income tax that runs roughly 0.5% to 3.0% depending on where they live.1Indiana Department of Revenue. What to Have Ready Before You Pay

Have your Social Security Number (or ITIN), your completed return or tax notice, and the exact amount you owe. If you’re making an estimated quarterly payment by mail, use Form ES-40. Paying Online Through INTIME

INTIME, the Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine, is the fastest option and doesn’t require an account for a one-time payment. From the INTIME homepage, select “Make a payment,” choose your tax type (individual income tax, for example), enter your identifying details, and pick a payment method.5Indiana Department of Revenue. • Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover). A convenience fee of $1.00 plus 1.99% of the payment applies.6Indiana Department of Revenue. INTIME for Individual Income Tax Customers

Once you submit, INTIME displays a confirmation number. Print or save that screen. It’s your official proof of payment, with the transaction date and time.

Paying by Mail

Write your check or money order payable to the Indiana Department of Revenue. Put your Social Security Number and the tax year in the memo line so the payment can be matched to your account if it gets separated from the paperwork. Don’t staple or paper-clip the check to your return or voucher, since that interferes with automated processing.

Extensions Don’t Extend the Payment Deadline

An Indiana filing extension gives you until November 16, 2026 to file the return, but the tax itself is still due April 15, 2026.14Indiana Department of Revenue. Extension of Time to File Interest starts running on any unpaid balance after April 15. The late-filing penalty is waived if you meet both of these conditions:

  • Pay at least 90% of the tax owed by April 15, 2026.
  • Pay the remaining balance, including interest, by November 16, 2026.

Penalties and Interest for Late Payment

Late or underpaid tax triggers two charges. The DOR adds interest at 7% per year on any balance owed after the due date.8Indiana Department of Revenue.
