Iowa income tax returns and any balance owed are due by April 30 of the year following the tax year.1Department of Revenue. Individual Taxes That date does not move because you need more time to file. Iowa has no separate extension form, and a federal extension does not carry over. To avoid both a late-filing penalty and interest, pay everything and file by April 30.4Department of Revenue. Note: Additional Information

If You Can’t Pay in Full

Iowa allows installment agreements when you cannot pay the full balance at once. All prior tax returns must be filed before the Department will approve a plan. You can request one through GovConnectIowa or by submitting Form IA 211.5Department of Revenue. GovConnectIowa

A payment plan does not stop interest. Under Iowa Code Section 421.7, interest compounds annually on the unpaid balance at the rate set by the director of revenue.9Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 421.7 – Interest Rate For 2026, that rate is 10% per year.10Department of Revenue. Penalties and Interest Rates Default on the agreement and the Department can revoke it and begin collection actions immediately.

For genuine financial hardship, Iowa also offers an offer in compromise, a written agreement to settle for less than the full amount based on doubtful collectability or severe economic hardship.11Department of Revenue. Offer in Compromise The Department only compromises debt that has already been formally assessed, so this is not an option for taxes that have not yet been billed to you.

Penalties and Collection If You Pay Late

Iowa charges a flat 5% penalty on any tax not paid by the due date, separate from and on top of interest.4Department of Revenue. Note: Additional Information Interest for 2026 runs at 10% per year, calculated at a daily rate of roughly 0.027% and compounding annually.10Department of Revenue. Penalties and Interest Rates The penalty hits once; interest keeps running until the balance is zero.

The Central Collections Unit has broad authority when a balance goes unpaid.12Department of Revenue. Collections Its tools include:

  • Wage levy of up to 25% of your pay, sent by your employer, until the debt is satisfied.
  • Bank account levy, seizing funds directly.
  • Property liens that can block a sale or refinance of your home.
  • Suspension or revocation of a professional license if you owe $1,000 or more, plus denial of hunting, fishing, and other recreational licenses.
  • A block on renewing your vehicle registration.
  • Offset of state tax refunds, casino and lottery winnings, and state vendor payments through the State of Iowa Setoff Program, and offset of federal tax refunds through the federal Treasury Offset Program. Being on a payment plan does not stop either offset.

The license and registration consequences are the ones most taxpayers do not anticipate. If you owe and cannot pay in full, requesting a payment plan before Collections acts is the practical move.12Department of Revenue. Collections
