How to Pay Kansas Tolls and What Happens If You Don’t

To pay tolls on the Kansas Turnpike, you either use a K-TAG transponder linked to a DriveKS account, which cuts every toll in half, or you let the overhead cameras photograph your license plate and pay the invoice the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) mails to the vehicle’s registered owner. The turnpike went fully cashless in July 2024, so there is no cash option and no toll booths.1Kansas Turnpike Authority. K-TAG Is the Cheap Way

A K-TAG sticker transponder is free, has no monthly account fee, and gives you a flat 50% discount on every Kansas Turnpike trip. You order one at DriveKS.com, stick it to your windshield, and tolls are billed once a month to whatever payment method you linked to the account.3DriveKS. KTAG

K-TAG also gets the transponder rate on partner systems in Oklahoma (PikePass), Texas (TollTag, TxTag, EZ TAG), Florida (SunPass Pro and Mini), and Colorado (ExpressToll), plus multi-state commercial programs like BestPass, PrePass Plus, BancPass, and NationalPass. Those transponders work in reverse on the Kansas Turnpike at the discounted rate.1Kansas Turnpike Authority. Tolling

One boundary worth naming: E-ZPass, the dominant transponder in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, is not accepted in Kansas. If you’re visiting with an E-ZPass, your trip will be billed to your license plate at the higher rate.

Pay-By-Plate If You Don’t Have a Transponder

Without a compatible transponder, cameras read your plate and the KTA mails an invoice to the address on your vehicle registration. The rate is double the K-TAG rate, and each trip carries an administrative fee. You can pay the invoice online through DriveKS, by phone, by mailed check or money order, or in person at a KTA customer service center. Paying online after the trip, before the paper invoice arrives, avoids processing delays.

Because the system depends on your plate, keep it clean, undamaged, and correctly registered with the Kansas Department of Revenue. A misread plate doesn’t erase the toll; it just delays and complicates the notice.

What Tolls Actually Cost

Tolls are calculated per mile and by axle count. The gap between having a transponder and not having one is large:

  • Passenger cars and motorcycles (2-axle): $0.048/mile with K-TAG, $0.096/mile without
  • 3-axle vehicles: $0.092/mile with K-TAG, $0.184/mile without
  • 4-axle vehicles: $0.187/mile with K-TAG, $0.374/mile without
  • 5-axle vehicles: $0.303/mile with K-TAG, $0.606/mile without

A passenger car driving the full 236-mile turnpike pays roughly $11.33 with K-TAG versus $22.66 without. Over a year of regular commuting, that difference is why the free transponder is worth the few minutes it takes to sign up.

Rental Cars

Rental cars are where Kansas tolls surprise people. Most major rental agencies run automated toll billing that charges you the toll plus a daily convenience fee. At Avis, for example, that fee can run $6.95 per day you incur a toll, capped around $35 per rental. Some agencies sell flat-rate unlimited toll packages at $11 to $26 per day whether or not you use a toll road.

You can sidestep those surcharges by temporarily adding the rental’s license plate to your own DriveKS account. Log in, go to Vehicles, add the plate, and set an end date matching your return. Kansas tolls during that window will bill to your DriveKS account at the image-based rate. The plate won’t work for tolling in other states, so this trick only helps on the Kansas Turnpike itself. If you don’t already have a DriveKS account, you can open one just for the rental.4DriveKS. Rentals

What Happens If You Don’t Pay

Kansas toll enforcement escalates in predictable stages, and each one costs more than the last.

It starts with a toll statement mailed to the registered owner showing the toll, any administrative fee, and a payment deadline. Ignore it, and Kansas law lets the KTA add a toll-evasion civil penalty and additional costs on top of the original toll for each unpaid trip.2Kansas Legislature. Kansas Code 68-2020a – Failure or Refusal to Pay Toll; Penalty; Refusal to Register Vehicle; Appeals The KTA can also send the debt to a collection agency, which can hit your credit report.

Once your unpaid balance passes $100, the KTA can direct the Division of Vehicles to block your registration renewal until the debt is paid in full. You’ll have to settle the balance with the county treasurer before the state will process a renewal.2Kansas Legislature. Kansas Code 68-2020a – Failure or Refusal to Pay Toll; Penalty; Refusal to Register Vehicle; Appeals Driving on an expired registration because of that block creates a separate problem that compounds fast.

A separate statute makes it a criminal matter. Anyone who uses the turnpike and fails or refuses to pay the toll faces a fine of up to $100, up to 30 days in jail, or both. The KTA also gains a lien on the vehicle itself and can retain possession until the toll and all associated charges are paid.5Kansas Legislature. Kansas Code 68-2020 – Failure or Refusal to Pay Toll; Penalty; Lien on Vehicle Criminal prosecution is rare for ordinary forgetfulness, but intentional repeated evasion does get referred.

Disputing a Charge

If you think a toll is wrong, contest it through the KTA’s online dispute form before the payment deadline on the statement. Common reasons include a misread plate, a charge for a road you didn’t drive, or a toll billed to a vehicle you no longer own.

Bring documentation. Toll receipts, GPS records, or a screenshot of your DriveKS account showing a transponder charge for the same trip can each demonstrate the error. If you sold the car before the trip, a title transfer or bill of sale moves responsibility to the new owner. For a stolen vehicle, file a police report first; toll authorities routinely waive charges when a report confirms the theft occurred before the travel date.
