What to Have Ready
Before you start, pull together a few pieces of information the Department of Revenue uses to match your payment to your account:
- Your Social Security Number or ITIN.
- The tax year you are paying for (for example, 2025).
- Your filing status.
- The exact amount you owe, taken from your return or your most recent billing notice.
If you plan to mail your payment, you also need Form MO-1040V, the Individual Income Tax Payment Voucher. It is a one-page form that links your check to your tax account, and the current version is on the Department of Revenue website.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Paying Online

eCheck
An eCheck pulls funds directly from your checking or savings account. You will need your bank’s routing number and your account number. The handling fee is $0.50 per transaction, which makes this the cheapest electronic option.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Pay Individual Income Taxes Online Allow three to four business days for the payment to post to your tax account.
Credit or Debit Card
The portal accepts major credit and debit cards. Debit cards are processed as credit card transactions, so both carry the same convenience fee: 2.0% of the payment amount plus $0.25 per transaction.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Pay Individual Income Taxes Online On a $2,000 payment, the fee works out to $40.25. The portal shows the total, including fees, before you confirm.
After you enter your payment details, a review screen shows the transaction amount and account information. Confirm, then wait for the system to generate a confirmation number before closing your browser. Save or print that number; it is your immediate proof of payment.
Paying by Mail
Make your check or money order payable to the “Missouri Department of Revenue.” On the check itself, write your name, address, SSN, daytime phone number, and “2025 MO Income Tax.”2Missouri Department of Revenue. The mailing address depends on what is in the envelope:

Using the wrong P.O. Box can delay processing, so check before sealing the envelope. Do not staple or paperclip the check to the voucher, because the state uses high-speed scanning equipment that these attachments can jam. Place the voucher and check at the front of any documents you include.
A payment mailed by the deadline is generally considered on time based on the postmark date, even if it arrives later.4USPS. Mail Your Tax Return with USPS To be sure the envelope gets a postmark the day you mail it, ask a postal clerk at the counter to hand-cancel it. Certified mail gives you a delivery receipt for your records.
If You Cannot Pay in Full
If you owe more than you can pay by April 15, request an installment plan through the MyTax Missouri portal using your SSN and the PIN from your billing notice.5Missouri Department of Revenue. A payment plan prevents more aggressive collection while you pay down the balance, but it does not stop interest from accruing. Send whatever you can by the deadline, even if it is not the full amount; that reduces the base on which both penalties and interest are calculated.6Missouri Department of Revenue. Late Payment Costs
Missouri applies separate charges for filing late and paying late, and they stack:

- Interest: 7% per year on the unpaid tax, from the original due date until the balance is paid.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Statutory Interest Rates
If you need more time to prepare your return, Missouri grants an automatic extension to October 15, 2026, provided you also filed a federal extension. Quarterly Estimated Payments
If you earn income that is not subject to withholding, such as self-employment income, rental income, or investment gains, Missouri may require quarterly estimated payments. The quarterly due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. Confirming Your Payment
Online, the confirmation number you receive at the end of the transaction is your immediate proof. An eCheck takes three to four business days to post to your tax account, so check your bank statement after that window to confirm the withdrawal.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Mailed checks take longer, especially in March and April.
