Online Services Account or Quick Pay

An Individual Online Services account is free to create and gives you the full set of payment options: return balances, estimated payments, extension payments, bill responses, scheduled future payments, saved bank details, and a transaction history. Payments from a bank account are free; card payments carry a convenience fee.6Department of Taxation and Finance. Online Services Home

Quick Pay skips the login. It handles bills, notices, and installment payment agreement balances paid directly from a bank account at no cost.1Department of Taxation and Finance. Make a Payment It does not accept card payments, and it won’t take a return payment: if you owe money with your annual return and don’t have a bill yet, you need the Online Services account.

Paying a Balance Due With Your Return

Log in to Individual Online Services and choose the option to make a personal income tax payment. Enter the tax year, your filing status, and the amount. Authorize a direct debit from your bank account at no charge, or pay by credit card for a 2.20% convenience fee.4Department of Taxation and Finance. Make a Personal Income Tax Return Payment Online You can schedule the debit for a future date if you want it to hit closer to April 15 rather than right away. Submission produces an instant confirmation.

Paying a Bill or Notice

If the tax department has sent you a bill, such as a Statement of Proposed Audit Changes or a balance-due notice, do not use the return payment page. Use the “Pay a bill or notice” option instead, either inside Online Services or through Quick Pay.4Department of Taxation and Finance. Bank Account or Card

Paying directly from a bank account is free. You enter the routing and account numbers, and the state initiates an electronic debit.1Department of Taxation and Finance. Make a Payment

Paying by credit or debit card adds a 2.20% convenience fee charged by Wells Fargo, the state’s card services provider. The fee is separate from the tax payment, shows up as its own line on your card statement, and none of it goes to the Department of Taxation and Finance.7Department of Taxation and Finance. Credit and Debit Card Payment Information – Section: Convenience Fees On a $5,000 payment, that fee is $110. For larger balances the bank-account route is almost always the cheaper call.

Confirmation and Canceling a Scheduled Payment

When you click the final confirmation button, the payment is authorized and can’t be edited. A confirmation screen appears with a unique transaction confirmation number. Print it or save it as a PDF; that number is what you’ll need if a credit ever goes missing or a payment is questioned later.

The state treats the payment as received on the date the confirmation number is issued, which is what matters at a deadline. The actual debit from your bank account usually posts in one to three business days.

Scheduled a bank-account payment for a future date and need to call it off? Go to “View and cancel scheduled payments” in your Online Services account. The cancellation has to be in at least two business days before the scheduled date.8NYS Tax Department. Tax Tips for Individuals – New Due Date to File Miss that window and the debit will process; after that you’d need to contact the department directly. Once a payment is canceled, arrange a replacement so you don’t trigger a late payment penalty.

Estimated Tax Payments

If you expect to owe at least $300 in New York State income tax after withholding and credits, you generally owe quarterly estimated payments.9Department of Taxation and Finance. Instructions for Form IT-2105 This hits self-employed people, freelancers, and landlords most often. Make these through the same Individual Online Services account you’d use for a return payment.

The 2026 quarterly due dates are:

  • 1st quarter: April 15, 2026
  • 2nd quarter: June 15, 2026
  • 3rd quarter: September 15, 2026
  • 4th quarter: January 15, 2027

You can pay the whole year up front with the first installment or split it into four equal payments.10Department of Taxation and Finance. Estimated Tax Payment Due Dates

Extension Payments

Need more time to file? Request the extension through the tax department’s website at no charge; the request has to be in by April 15, 2026.2Department of Taxation and Finance. Filing Due Dates The extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you owe, pay by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. You can submit the extension payment online through your Online Services account at the same time you file the extension request.11NY.gov. Apply for an Extension of Time to File an Income Tax Return

What Late Payment Costs

The late payment penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the balance stays open, capped at 25%.12Department of Taxation and Finance. Interest and Penalties On a $10,000 balance that’s $50 a month, starting the day after the deadline.

Interest compounds daily on the unpaid tax, including accumulated penalties. New York sets the rate quarterly. The most recently published underpayment rate is 9.5% per year for personal income tax and 11% per year for corporation tax.13Department of Taxation and Finance. Interest Rates – 7/1/2025 Through 9/30/2025 Check the department’s website for the current quarter if you’re carrying a balance. Even a partial payment helps, because the penalty and interest only accrue on what’s left.

If You Can’t Pay in Full

If you can’t clear the balance within 60 days, request an installment payment agreement (IPA). You need an actual bill from the department first; you can’t set one up based only on a return you just filed.14Department of Taxation and Finance. Request an Installment Payment Agreement

You can request an IPA online through Online Services if your balance is $20,000 or less and the plan runs no more than 36 monthly payments. For a larger balance or a longer plan, call the department at 518-457-5434 during business hours.14Department of Taxation and Finance. Request an Installment Payment Agreement The department weighs your filing history, payment history, and current finances in deciding whether to approve the plan, and in some cases will file a tax warrant as a condition. Interest and the late payment penalty keep accruing on the remaining balance during the plan, so paying faster lowers the total cost.

Save or print the confirmation screen from every online payment, estimated-tax installment included. The confirmation number is your proof the state received the money, and it’s the fastest way to resolve a missing credit later.
