How to Pay NY State Taxes Online: Methods, Deadlines, and Penalties

To pay New York State taxes online, use the Department of Taxation and Finance’s Online Services portal at tax.ny.gov. Bank debit is free; credit and debit cards carry a 2.20% convenience fee processed through Wells Fargo.1Department of Taxation and Finance. Credit and Debit Card Payment Information If you have your bank details and a prior tax return in front of you, the whole process takes about ten minutes.

What to Have Ready

Before you open the portal, pull together:

  • Your Social Security Number for personal taxes, or your Employer Identification Number for a business.
  • The nine-digit routing number and account number from your checking or savings account, if you’re paying by bank debit.
  • A New York State tax return filed within the past five years. The portal verifies your identity using your New York taxable income and either the refund requested or balance owed on that return (Form IT-201 for full-year residents, Form IT-203 for part-year residents and nonresidents).2Tax.NY.gov. One easy-to-miss detail: if your bank has an ACH debit block on the account, contact the bank first and give them the Tax Department’s ACH company ID for the tax type you’re paying. Skip this and the payment bounces, which triggers a returned-payment fee and leaves the underlying tax unpaid while penalties and interest keep running.3Tax.NY.gov. ACH Debit Block Information

Pick Your Path: Online Services Account or Quick Pay

New York gives you two ways in.

Individual Online Services Account

This is the full-featured option. You create a free NY.gov ID at my.ny.gov, then use it to sign into the Tax Department’s Online Services portal and verify your identity with information from a prior return.4The State of New York. Get a My NY.Gov ID2Tax.NY.gov. Online Services Individual Account Creation Requirements From the dashboard you can make payments, view filing history, respond to notices and bills, and request an installment agreement.5Department of Taxation and Finance. Quick Pay

Need to make a one-time payment and never think about the account again? Quick Pay lets you submit a bank debit or card payment with lighter verification, no account required.5Department of Taxation and Finance. Online Services Home The trade-off is that you can’t view payment history, respond to notices, or set up a payment plan through it. For someone who only interacts with the Tax Department at filing time, that’s fine.

Business Online Services

Businesses and employers use a separate Business Online Services account to file and pay corporation tax, sales tax, withholding tax, and related obligations.6Tax.NY.gov. Online Services for Businesses Registration is similar to the individual side but keyed to your EIN.

Selecting the Tax and Entering Payment Details

Once you’re in, the portal asks you to select the tax year and payment type. For individual income tax, choose Form IT-201 if you lived in New York all year or Form IT-203 if you were a part-year resident or nonresident.7Tax.NY.gov. Instructions for Form IT-201 Full-Year Resident Income Tax Return If you’re paying toward a future quarter rather than a filed return, pick the estimated tax option so the money lands in the right bucket.

Enter the exact amount. If you’re responding to a bill, use the figure on that notice. You can schedule the payment for a future date, which is handy if you want to line everything up now and have the money leave your account closer to the deadline. Just keep the scheduled date on or before the due date.

Now the bank information. Slow down here. The portal does not verify routing and account numbers in real time, so a typo means the payment fails after submission, and a returned payment can carry a fee on top of the still-unpaid tax.

Bank Debit vs. Card

Bank debit is free. You authorize an ACH withdrawal, the funds move within a few business days, and you pay nothing beyond the tax itself. Direct debit is available both through Online Services and through approved commercial tax software for income tax returns, estimated tax, and extension payments.8Department of Taxation and Finance. E-File Mandate and Filing/Payment Methods

Credit and debit cards go through Wells Fargo, which charges 2.20% of the payment amount.1Department of Taxation and Finance. Credit and Debit Card Payment Information On a $5,000 balance, that’s $110. The fee is non-refundable once the transaction clears. The portal hands you off to Wells Fargo’s payment page, then returns you to the Tax Department site for confirmation.

Confirm and Save Proof

Before anything processes, the portal shows a review screen listing tax year, payment type, amount, scheduled date, and bank or card details. Check every field. Once you submit a bank debit, the ACH authorization is initiated immediately or queued for the date you picked; card payments process as soon as Wells Fargo completes the transaction.

The payment isn’t complete until you see a confirmation page with a transaction ID. Save or print it. If a question comes up later, that number is your proof the payment was submitted on time. Bank statements show the debit but not necessarily when the Tax Department received your submission.

Canceling a Scheduled Payment

If you set a future date, you can cancel through your Online Services account as long as the scheduled date is at least two business days out. Once the payment has been sent to your bank for processing, you can’t reverse it online. For installment agreement payments, the debit request goes to your bank three days before the due date, so you’d need to call the Tax Department at 518-457-5772 before that window closes.9Tax.NY.gov. 2026 Deadlines for Individual Taxpayers

A due date that falls on a weekend or legal holiday moves to the next business day.10Tax.NY.gov. 2026 Tax Filing Dates An extension gives you more time to file the return; it does not extend the time to pay. The money is still owed by April 15.

What It Costs to Be Late

New York charges two separate penalties, and they stack:

  • Late filing penalty: 5% of the unpaid tax for the first month, plus 5% for each additional month or partial month, up to 25%. If you’re more than 60 days late, the minimum is $100 or 100% of the tax due, whichever is less.12New York State Senate. New York Tax Law Section 685
  • Late payment penalty: 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month, up to 25%.13Tax.NY.gov. Interest and Penalties

Interest compounds daily on top of both. For the second quarter of 2026, the annual rate on unpaid income tax is 8.5%. Business rates run higher: 10% for corporation and withholding tax, and 14.5% for sales and use tax over the same period.14Tax.NY.gov. Interest Rates 4/1/2026 – 6/30/2026 Both penalties can be waived for reasonable cause; the interest is never waived.

If You Can’t Pay the Full Balance

You can request a monthly installment payment agreement through your Online Services account. Online eligibility caps at a total balance of $20,000 and a plan length of 36 months.15Tax.NY.gov. Request an Installment Payment Agreement Larger balances or longer plans require a call to 518-457-5434.

To request a plan online, sign in, open the Services menu, and select “Installment payment agreement” under Payments, bills and notices. Once approved, monthly payments are pulled from your bank on either the 5th or the 15th. You also have to keep filing future returns on time and paying current taxes as they come due. Miss either and the agreement can be revoked, putting the full remaining balance back on the table.15Tax.NY.gov. Request an Installment Payment Agreement

Interest and the late-payment penalty keep accruing on the unpaid balance while the plan is active. An installment agreement stops escalated collection action, but it doesn’t freeze what you owe. Paying more than the minimum each month shortens the plan and cuts the total cost.
