You can pay New York State taxes online through the Department of Taxation and Finance at tax.ny.gov, either with Quick Pay (no login required) for a bill, notice, or installment payment, or through an Online Services account for return payments, estimated tax, and scheduled payments. Paying from a checking or savings account is free. Credit and debit cards work too, but Wells Fargo, the state’s card processor, charges a 2.20% convenience fee on the payment amount.1Department of Taxation and Finance. What to Have Ready
What you need depends on what you’re paying. For a bill or notice, pull out the notice itself and grab the case number printed on it. You’ll also need verification details from a return you filed in the last four years: your Social Security number (and your spouse’s, if applicable), your filing status, the ZIP code on that return, and your first and last name.2Department of Taxation and Finance. For a return payment through Online Services, you need your login credentials and the amount owed from your return.3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Make a Personal Income Tax Return Payment Online Either way, keep your bank routing and account numbers within reach if you’re paying from a bank account, or your card if you’re paying with plastic.
Quick Pay or Online Services Account
Quick Pay handles one-off payments toward a bill, a notice, or an installment payment agreement. No account, no login, no cost when you use a bank account.4Department of Taxation and Finance. Make a Payment It’s the fastest path if you have a single balance in front of you.
An Online Services account is the better fit if you want to pay a return balance, make estimated payments, schedule a payment for a future date up to and including the due date, or view and respond to notices in one place.5Department of Taxation and Finance. Online Services Home Setup requires identity verification, but once you’re in you have a dashboard for anything that comes up later.
Bank Account or Card
Bank payments are free. The Department pulls the money as an ACH debit, and your statement will show a line item labeled “NYS Tax Payment” for the amount you authorized.3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Card payments run through Wells Fargo and add a 2.20% fee. On a $1,000 payment, that’s $22 in extra cost.1Department of Taxation and Finance. Credit and Debit Card Payment Information The fee goes to Wells Fargo, not to the state, and it’s nonrefundable.
The Steps
Once you’re inside Quick Pay or logged in to Online Services, choose the option to make a payment. The screens ask for your identifying details, the tax type and period, and the dollar amount. Online Services users can pick a future payment date up through the due date.4Department of Taxation and Finance. Make a Payment
Enter your routing and account numbers, or pick a saved bank account. If you’re paying by card, follow the prompts for card details. Before you finalize, check the summary screen. Confirm the amount, the tax period, and the account numbers against your records. Submitting authorizes the withdrawal.
Paying Estimated Tax Online
If some of your income isn’t withheld at the source (self-employment, investments, rental income), you may owe quarterly estimated tax. Online Services handles this electronically, so you don’t have to mail Form IT-2105 vouchers.6Department of Taxation and Finance. Instructions for Form IT-2105
The 2026 quarterly due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, 2027. Each due date corresponds to a cumulative share of your estimated annual tax: 25%, 50%, 75%, and the remaining balance.7Department of Taxation and Finance. Year 2026/2027 Estimated Tax You can pay the whole year at once with the April installment, or split it across the four dates.
Deadlines, Extensions, and Late Charges
New York State personal income tax returns for calendar-year filers are due April 15, and your payment is due the same day.8Department of Taxation and Finance. 2026 Tax Filing Dates An extension of time to file does not extend the time to pay. If you extend without paying, interest starts running on the unpaid balance from April 15, compounded daily at a rate the Department adjusts each quarter.9Department of Taxation and Finance. Interest and Penalties
Paying late also triggers a penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month it stays outstanding, capped at 25% of the balance. On $2,000 paid three months late, that’s $30 in penalty plus interest. The Department may waive the late-payment penalty if you can show reasonable cause.9Department of Taxation and Finance. Interest and Penalties
Filing late is worse than paying late: the late-filing penalty is 5% of the tax due per month, again capped at 25%, with a minimum penalty on returns more than 60 days late of the lesser of $100 or the full amount owed.9Department of Taxation and Finance. Interest and Penalties File on time even if you can’t pay in full, and pay whatever you can by April 15 to hold down interest.
Estimated tax has its own underpayment penalty. You can generally avoid it by paying at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of the prior year’s tax through withholding and estimated payments (110% if your adjusted gross income was above $150,000).
If You Can’t Pay in Full
If your balance won’t clear within 60 days, you can request an installment payment agreement (IPA) to spread it across monthly payments. The Department looks at your payment history, filing history, current finances, and compliance before deciding.10Department of Taxation and Finance. Request an Installment Payment Agreement
You can set up an IPA online through Online Services if the balance is $20,000 or less and can be paid off in 36 months or fewer. For larger balances or longer terms, call 518-457-5434 during business hours. One catch: you can’t request an IPA until you’ve received a bill from the Department. If you just filed a return showing a balance, wait for the bill, and pay what you can in the meantime.10Department of Taxation and Finance. Request an Installment Payment Agreement
Interest and the late-payment penalty keep accruing on the unpaid balance while the plan is active, so paying it off ahead of schedule saves money. In some cases the Department may file a tax warrant as a condition of the agreement.
Confirmation and Scheduled Payments
When your payment goes through, the system shows a confirmation number. Save it or print the page. Bank withdrawals typically clear within one to two business days and appear on your statement as “NYS Tax Payment.”3New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. If you scheduled a payment for a future date, know that the Department sends the withdrawal request to your bank three days before the due date. After that, it can’t be canceled. To cancel a scheduled IPA payment before the three-day window, call 518-457-5772 during business hours.11Department of Taxation and Finance. Make Changes to Your IPA Keep your confirmation numbers and any follow-up email from the Department with your tax records in case a question comes up later about when or how much you paid.
