How to Pay Oklahoma Tolls: PikePass, PlatePay, and Penalties

Every Oklahoma turnpike is cashless, so to pay Oklahoma tolls you use one of two systems: a PikePass transponder that deducts tolls automatically at a discounted rate, or PlatePay, which photographs your license plate and mails an invoice to the registered owner at roughly twice the PikePass rate. There is no cash option at the booth. If you drive a turnpike, you are already using one of these two systems whether you signed up or not.

Paying With PikePass

PikePass is a small transponder that mounts on your windshield and deducts tolls as you pass through. Opening an account requires a $40 minimum prepaid deposit, which covers up to five transponders. Each additional batch of five costs another $40.1PIKEPASS. Create PIKEPASS Account – Account Types

You can sign up online at pikepass.com or visit one of four PikePass store locations in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Walters, and Midwest City. Stores are open 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week except state holidays.2PIKEPASS. PIKEPASS – Safe. Efficient. Reliable

PikePass also works on toll roads in Texas, Kansas, Florida (outside the Orlando area), and on E-470 and the Express Lanes in Colorado. Transponders from those states work on Oklahoma turnpikes the same way.3PIKEPASS. Interoperability

Paying a PlatePay Invoice

If you drive through without a PikePass or compatible transponder, cameras capture your license plate and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority mails a PlatePay invoice to the registered vehicle owner. No signup is required; the bill simply arrives.4PIKEPASS. PlatePay You can pay online at platepay.pikepass.com or by mail using the remittance information on the invoice.

PlatePay rates run about double the PikePass rate on most turnpikes and several times higher on some. A few examples for a standard two-axle vehicle from the OTA’s published schedules:

  • H.E. Bailey Turnpike (OKC to state line): $5.10 with PikePass, $10.95 with PlatePay
  • Muskogee Turnpike (Tulsa to Webber Falls): $3.30 with PikePass, $7.00 with PlatePay
  • Cimarron Turnpike (Tulsa to I-35): $3.30 with PikePass, $7.45 with PlatePay
  • Kickapoo Turnpike (Turner Turnpike to E. Britton Rd): $0.60 with PikePass, $3.95 with PlatePay

If you would rather not pay the higher rate, the OTA lets you open a PikePass account online and convert an existing PlatePay charge to the PikePass rate.5Oklahoma.gov. Toll Rates by Turnpike, Class and Type4PIKEPASS. PlatePay

Tolls in a Rental Car

Toll liability follows the registered owner, so a rental company receives the PlatePay invoice first and then passes the cost back to you under the rental agreement, usually with fees attached. Common structures include a flat daily fee that applies for every day of the rental regardless of use, a per-use daily fee that applies only on days you hit a toll point, and per-transaction administrative fees added on top of each toll. Those fees can exceed the toll itself.

If you rent in Oklahoma often, check whether the rental company allows a personal PikePass on the windshield. Using your own transponder avoids the markup and gets you the lower rate.

What Happens if You Don’t Pay

Ignoring a toll bill in Oklahoma gets expensive quickly, and the consequences escalate in stages.

$25 Civil Penalty Per Violation

Each unpaid toll adds a $25 civil penalty on top of the toll itself, assessed against the registered vehicle owner.6Justia. Oklahoma Code Title 47 Section 47-11-1401.2 A single trip that crosses several toll points can generate several of these at once.

Certified Notice of Toll Evasion

The OTA escalates unpaid accounts by mailing a Certified Notice of Toll Evasion. You have 30 days from the date printed on that notice to either pay or contest the charges.7PIKEPASS. Oklahoma Turnpike Authority – Violation FAQ Missing that window narrows your options.

Vehicle Registration Hold

The OTA coordinates with other state agencies to block registration renewals for drivers with unpaid toll debt. Your plates will not renew until the balance and penalties are paid in full.

Misdemeanor Charges

Failing to pay a toll is a misdemeanor under Oklahoma law. Conviction carries a fine of $10 to $200, a jail sentence of 5 to 30 days, or both.8Oklahoma Legal. Oklahoma Statutes Title 47 Section 11-1401 Prosecution is uncommon for occasional missed tolls but remains available for persistent evaders.

Collections and Lawsuits

Delinquent accounts can be referred to third-party debt collectors, which may affect your credit. The OTA has statutory authority to sue and be sued and can pursue civil litigation for unpaid amounts.9Justia. Oklahoma Code Title 69 Section 69-1703 – Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Created A judgment can lead to wage garnishment or bank levies.

Disputing a Charge

For a billing error, duplicate charge, or PikePass account problem, the OTA takes disputes through an online problem report form. If the violation notice is for a vehicle you no longer own, you need to complete an Affidavit of Non-Liability, have it notarized, and return it to the OTA’s Enforcement Branch with documentation of the sale or trade within 30 days of the date on the Certified Notice of Toll Evasion.7PIKEPASS. Oklahoma Turnpike Authority – Violation FAQ The affidavit is only required when you are contesting the violation, not when you are simply paying.

If you think the plate reader picked up the wrong vehicle, you can ask the OTA to review the photographic evidence attached to the invoice. Misreads happen most often with obscured or damaged tags.

Deducting Business Tolls

Tolls paid for business driving are deductible on your federal taxes, in addition to either actual vehicle expenses or the standard mileage rate. Self-employed drivers claim them on Schedule C; farmers use Schedule F.11Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 511 – Business Travel Expenses

Most W-2 employees cannot deduct unreimbursed tolls under current tax law. Narrow exceptions apply to National Guard and reserve members traveling to drill, qualified performing artists, fee-based state or local government officials, and eligible educators. Reimbursements paid through an employer’s accountable plan are not taxable to you and do not need to be deducted.11Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 511 – Business Travel Expenses
