A Daly City parking ticket can be paid online at pticket.com/daly, by phone at (888) 442-4088, or by mail to the city’s Redwood City P.O. Box, and if you want to fight it you have 21 calendar days from the issue date to request a free initial review. Both tracks run through the same PTicket system used by the Daly City Police Department. Ignoring the citation is the expensive choice: late fees stack on, the DMV can block your registration renewal, and after five unpaid tickets your car can be towed.
Paying the Ticket
You need two things before you pay: the citation number printed on the ticket and your license plate number. Lost the paper ticket? Call the Interactive Voice Response line at (888) 442-4088 with your plate number and the system will pull up the citation.
There are three ways to pay:
- Online at pticket.com/daly with a credit card. A $3.99 convenience fee is added per citation.1Daly City. Parking and Traffic Citations
- By phone at (888) 442-4088 through the automated system, with your citation number, plate number, and card ready.1Daly City. Parking and Traffic Citations
- By mail with a check or money order to City of Daly City, P.O. Box 9003, Redwood City, CA 94065-9003. Write the citation number on the check so the payment lands on the right ticket.1Daly City. Parking and Traffic Citations
Keep your confirmation number or receipt. If a payment goes missing in the system, that record is your only protection against being charged twice or having your registration flagged.
Contesting the Ticket
California gives you a three-step appeals process, and each step has a firm deadline. Miss one and the fine is locked in.
Step 1: Initial Review (21 days, free)
You have 21 calendar days from the date the citation was issued to request an initial review. There is no fee. Submit online through PTicket or mail a written explanation to City of Daly City, P.O. Box 9003, Redwood City, CA 94065-9003.2pticket.com. Daly City – Contesting FAQ Include anything that supports your case: photos of the signage, a valid parking permit, proof that you weren’t the driver. The city mails you a written decision.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 40215
Step 2: Administrative Hearing (21 days, deposit required)
If the initial review goes against you, you have 21 calendar days from the mailing date of that decision to request an administrative hearing. You must pay the full citation amount upfront as a deposit before the hearing is scheduled. Win the hearing and the deposit is refunded.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 40215
You can choose a hearing in person, by mail, or in writing. The hearing must take place within 90 calendar days of your request, and you can ask for one continuance of up to 21 days.2pticket.com. Daly City – Contesting FAQ If you can’t afford the deposit, California law requires the city to have a written procedure letting you request a hearing without paying first, on proof of inability to pay.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code VEH 40215
Step 3: Superior Court Appeal (30 days)
If the hearing officer rules against you, your last option is a civil appeal in San Mateo County Superior Court, filed within 30 calendar days of the mailing date of the final decision. The court hears the case fresh, and the city’s file on your citation is automatically admitted as evidence. A filing fee applies and the court keeps it regardless of outcome. If you win, the city must reimburse the filing fee and refund the deposited penalty.4California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code Section 40230
What Happens If You Don’t Pay
Unpaid tickets escalate in stages, and each stage costs more than the last.
Late penalties. Once the payment window closes, the city adds a late fee. The original fine can grow substantially. Paying promptly is almost always cheaper than dealing with the markup.
DMV registration hold. California law lets cities report unpaid parking citations to the DMV, which then blocks your vehicle registration renewal. You cannot renew until every outstanding violation is paid or cleared by the issuing agency.5California DMV. Parking/Toll Violations on Record If you pay the city directly, keep the receipt. To clear the hold you may need to submit a Notice of Payment form or other documentation from the issuing agency to the DMV.
Towing and impoundment. Once a vehicle has five or more unanswered parking citations, California law authorizes law enforcement to tow and impound it. The car stays impounded until the owner proves identity, provides a California address, and shows that all outstanding parking penalties and traffic violations have been cleared.6California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22651 You also owe the towing fees and daily storage charges on top of the fines.
Collections. If a citation stays unpaid long enough, the city can send the debt to a private collection agency. A parking ticket by itself doesn’t appear on your credit report, but once a collector reports it, the collection account can stay on your record for seven years.
Rules That Generate Most Daly City Tickets
A few recurring violations account for most citations in town. Knowing them beats contesting a ticket you probably earned.
The 72-hour rule. Daly City prohibits leaving any vehicle parked on a public street for more than 72 consecutive hours. Officers mark tires or track vehicles another way, and after the limit passes the car can be cited and eventually towed at your expense. This catches people who park a second car on the street or leave town for a long weekend.
Street sweeping. Sweeping schedules are posted on signs at the entrance to residential blocks, and leaving your car in place during the posted hours is one of the most common tickets issued citywide. Posted times vary by neighborhood, so check the sign on your specific block instead of assuming the schedule from a nearby street applies.
Hill parking. Because of the city’s steep terrain, California Vehicle Code 22509 lets local authorities require drivers to curb their wheels when parking on any grade steeper than three percent. Not doing it can bring a citation, and worse, a runaway vehicle.7California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22509 – Parking on Grades
