How to Pay Utah State Taxes Online: TAP Steps, Deadlines, and Late Penalties

You can pay Utah state taxes online through Taxpayer Access Point (TAP), the Utah State Tax Commission’s official portal. An electronic check pulled from your bank account is free. A credit or debit card runs through a third-party processor called GovPay and adds a 3 percent convenience fee, so a $2,000 balance paid by card costs an extra $60.1Utah State Tax Commission. Payment Fees TAP handles individual income tax, corporate tax, sales tax, withholding, and other taxes the Commission administers.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these so you can finish in one session:

  • Your tax identification number: Social Security Number for individual income tax, or Federal Employer Identification Number for a business account.
  • The tax type and the period or year you are paying for.
  • The exact amount owed, taken from your return, a billing notice, or your TAP balance.
  • For an electronic check, your bank’s nine-digit routing number and your account number.
  • If asked, your 14-digit Utah account number or the Letter ID printed on correspondence from the Tax Commission. These tie your payment to the right record.

Check every digit before you submit. A single wrong number in a routing or account field can bounce the payment, and a bounced payment does not pause penalties.

Making the Payment in TAP

Go to the TAP website. You can use Quick Pay without an account, or log into a registered TAP account that also shows your balance, past payments, and notices.2Utah State Tax Commission. TAP FAQ – Payments

For Quick Pay, click “Make a payment” from the Payments box on the TAP homepage. The system walks you through the tax type, identification numbers, payment method, and amount. A review screen appears before anything is final. You will check an authorization box giving the state, or GovPay for card payments, permission to process the transaction. After you click Submit, wait for the confirmation screen. TAP generates a unique confirmation code and also emails a confirmation. Save or print both before you close the browser.2Utah State Tax Commission. TAP FAQ – Payments

When Your Payment Posts, and How to Cancel

Your payment’s effective date is the day you submit it, regardless of how long it takes to clear.2Utah State Tax Commission. TAP FAQ – Payments A payment submitted on April 15 counts as April 15 even if the bank takes several days to release the funds. Depending on your bank, posting to your Tax Commission account can take 3 to 10 business days. If you have a TAP account, you can check whether the status has moved from pending to completed.

To cancel an ACH payment, open “Find your submission” in TAP’s Tools panel. If the status still reads “Submitted,” click “Cancel Payment.” If the payment has already cleared your bank, call Taxpayer Resources at 801-297-7705. For a payment scheduled on a future date, email a cancellation request to TAPSupport@utah.gov.2Utah State Tax Commission. Deadlines and the Extension Trap

Utah individual income tax returns and payments are generally due April 15, following the federal deadline. If April 15 lands on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

Utah automatically grants a six-month extension to file. You do not submit a separate form. But an extension to file is not an extension to pay. To avoid penalties, pay what you owe by the original April due date, even if you file later.3Utah State Tax Commission. Individual and Corporate Income Tax Extension Due Date Jan-Dec 2025

If You Pay Late

Utah’s late-payment penalty rises in tiers based on how far past due you are:4Utah Legislature. Utah Code 59-1-401 Definitions – Offenses and Penalties

  • 1 to 5 days late: 2 percent of the unpaid tax, minimum $20.
  • 6 to 15 days late: 5 percent of the unpaid tax, minimum $20.
  • More than 15 days late: 10 percent of the unpaid tax, minimum $20.

Interest runs on top of the penalty. For 2026, the annual rate is 6 percent, accruing from the original due date until the balance is paid in full.5Utah State Tax Commission. Penalties and Interest

If you cannot pay in full, request a payment plan from your TAP account. Log in, open the Apply Online box, and click “Apply for a waiver or a pay plan.”2Utah State Tax Commission. The penalty for failing to file is separate from, and can be steeper than, the penalty for failing to pay.
