How to Pay Wisconsin Sales Tax Online: Due Dates, Discounts & Penalties

To pay Wisconsin sales tax online, log in to the Department of Revenue’s My Tax Account portal at tap.revenue.wi.gov, file the return for the period you’re reporting, and submit payment by ACH debit or credit card. ACH debit is free; card payments carry third-party fees. Before you can do any of this, you need a Wisconsin seller’s permit and a My Tax Account profile linked to your business.

What You Need Before You File

You cannot collect or remit Wisconsin sales tax without a seller’s permit from the Department of Revenue. Apply at least three weeks before you open for business, either online through the department’s website or by faxing or mailing a paper Application for Business Tax Registration. Online applicants receive a permit number by email within one to two business days; paper permits arrive seven to ten business days after the department receives the application.1Wisconsin Department of Revenue. In some cases, the department may require a security deposit of up to $15,000 before or after issuing the permit. This is most common when the applicant has a history of delinquent taxes, and refusing to pay the deposit can result in denial or revocation of the permit.1Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Once you have the permit, register for My Tax Account. You’ll need your 15-digit Wisconsin Tax Account Number and your Federal Employer Identification Number or Social Security Number, plus a verification detail such as an amount from a prior return or a Letter ID from department correspondence.2Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Handle this well before your first due date rather than the night the return is due.

When Your Return Is Due

Wisconsin sets your filing frequency by how much tax you owe per quarter, and the department reviews the assignment each year:

  • Annual filers: $600 or less in tax per year
  • Quarterly filers: $601 to $1,200 in tax per quarter
  • Monthly filers: $1,201 to $3,600 in tax per quarter
  • Early monthly filers: $3,601 or more in tax per quarter

Returns are due by the last day of the month after the reporting period ends. A quarterly return covering January through March is due April 30. Early monthly filers are the one exception, with returns due by the 20th of the following month. If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.4Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Filing the Return in My Tax Account

After logging in, your dashboard lists your active tax accounts and any returns coming due. Select the sales tax account and the filing period, then work through the data-entry screens to report gross sales, non-taxable sales, and deductions. Wisconsin requires you to break out sales by county so the system can calculate the correct county tax on each portion.5Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 77.58 – Returns and Payments The state rate is 5%; 70 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties add 0.5%, Milwaukee County adds 0.9%, and the city of Milwaukee adds another 2% on top of that, for a 7.9% combined rate on sales sourced there.6Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Before submission, a summary page shows every line you entered and the total tax due. This is the last chance to catch a data-entry error before the return is locked in, and it matters: an incorrect return can trigger a 25% penalty on the full tax amount.7Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 77.60 – Interest and Penalties Once you confirm, the system moves you to payment.

How to Pay: Electronic Options and Costs

My Tax Account offers two main ways to pay:

  • ACH debit (electronic funds transfer): the Department of Revenue pulls the exact tax amount from your bank account. Wisconsin administrative code requires ACH debit transfers to be free, so this is the cheapest option.8Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Administrative Code Tax 1.12
  • Credit card, Apple Pay, or PayPal: routed through a third-party vendor, with a $1.00 transaction fee plus a 2.25% processing fee on the payment amount. CheckFreePay is a separate option at participating locations, charging $3.00 per transaction.9Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Credit Card and Other Payment Options

The processing fees go to the vendor, not to the state. On a $5,000 tax payment, a credit card adds roughly $113.50 in fees; ACH debit costs nothing. For a business that files sales tax on a monthly or quarterly rhythm, the difference adds up quickly. Save or print the confirmation number the system returns once payment is submitted. If a question ever comes up about a payment, that confirmation is the fastest proof you have.

The Discount for Filing on Time

Wisconsin gives on-time filers a small break. If your payment is not delinquent, you can deduct 0.75% of the taxes due (or $10, whichever is greater) as an administration expense, up to $8,000 per reporting period.10Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 77.61 – Administrative Provisions My Tax Account calculates the discount automatically when the return is filed on time. Miss the deadline and you lose it.

What Late or Wrong Filings Cost

Penalties and interest stack quickly on a Wisconsin sales tax return that’s late or incorrect:

  • Late filing: 5% of the unpaid tax for the first month, plus 5% for each month or partial month the return remains unfiled, up to 25%.
  • Incorrect return: 25% of the full tax amount if the department determines the return was wrong.
  • Fraud: 50% of the tax due for failing to file or filing a false return with intent to evade.
  • Interest: 12% per year from the due date, and 1.5% per month on delinquent taxes.
7Wisconsin State Legislature. Wisconsin Code 77.60 – Interest and Penalties

A return three months late is already carrying a 15% penalty plus accumulated interest. Even an honest error can cost 25% of the tax. It’s cheaper to double-check the return before submitting than to fight a penalty notice later.

If You Sell Into Wisconsin From Out of State

A business based outside Wisconsin must register, collect, and remit Wisconsin sales tax once its gross sales into the state exceed $100,000 in the current or previous calendar year. Wisconsin does not use a separate transaction-count threshold; the $100,000 in gross sales is the only trigger.11Wisconsin Department of Revenue. DOR Remote Sellers – Wayfair Decision After crossing that threshold, register for a seller’s permit and set up My Tax Account the same way an in-state business would. Collection follows the destination of each sale, which can mean tracking county rates across dozens of counties, but the filing and payment process online is the same.
