To pay a New Mexico MVD citation online, go to eservices.mvd.newmexico.gov, enter the citation number from your ticket and your driver’s license number, and submit payment by card. This only works if the “Penalty Assessment” box is checked on your citation, and the payment must reach the MVD within 30 days of the date the ticket was issued.1Motor Vehicle Division NM. Check Your Ticket First
Pull out the physical citation and look for the checked box near the top. New Mexico splits traffic violations into two categories, and only one is eligible for online payment.
If the “Penalty Assessment” box is checked, you can pay through the MVD portal, by mail, or in person at the address printed on the ticket. If the “Court Appearance” or “Traffic Arraignment” box is checked, the online portal will not resolve your ticket. You must appear in the court listed on the citation by the date shown.1Motor Vehicle Division NM. Traffic Tickets
Certain offenses always require court and can never be handled as a penalty assessment:
- Driving while intoxicated (DWI)
- Reckless driving
- Hit-and-run (failing to stop after an accident involving injury, death, or property damage)
- Driving on a suspended or revoked license
- Refusing to sign the citation
These carry potential jail time, so the court process is mandatory.2Court Education NM. New Mexico Traffic Citations Manual If any of these appear on your ticket, skip the portal and contact the court directly.
What to Have Ready
Three things, before you log in:
- Your physical citation, with the serial citation number printed on it
- Your New Mexico driver’s license number
- A credit or debit card
Expect a small processing surcharge on top of the base fine. Have the card out before you start so the session doesn’t time out while you’re hunting for it.
Paying Through the MVD Portal
Start at the MVD homepage, www.mvd.newmexico.gov, and click “Pay a Citation.” That link takes you to the MyMVD online services portal at eservices.mvd.newmexico.gov, where ticket payment sits alongside registration renewals and reinstatement fees.3Motor Vehicle Division NM. MyMVD Online Services
Enter your citation number and license information. The system should display the violation and the penalty assessment amount owed. Check both carefully. If the violation listed or the amount looks wrong, stop and call the court on your ticket instead of paying an incorrect charge. Once you confirm the details, enter your card and submit.
Save or print the confirmation screen. The transaction number is your proof of payment if anything goes sideways at a future license renewal.
The 30-Day Deadline
You have 30 days from the date the citation was issued to pay. For state citations, payment must be received by the MVD within that window, though a payment postmarked inside the 30 days counts as timely.2Court Education NM. New Mexico Traffic Citations Manual Municipal penalty assessment programs can set their own timeframes, so check the back of your ticket if your citation came from a city.
Online payment is the fastest way to meet the deadline because it processes immediately. If you’re down to the last few days, don’t mail it.
How Much You’ll Owe
Penalty assessment amounts are fixed by state statute, so the fine is the same no matter who wrote the ticket. Most minor infractions carry a $25 penalty. Speeding scales with how far over the limit you were:4Justia. New Mexico Code 66-8-116 – Penalty Assessment Misdemeanors Definition Schedule of Assessments
- 1–10 mph over: $25
- 11–15 mph over: $30
- 16–20 mph over: $65
- 21–25 mph over: $100
- 26–30 mph over: $125
- 31–35 mph over: $150
- More than 35 mph over: $200
Other common amounts: $25 for a seatbelt violation, $25 for failure to obey a traffic sign or signal, $25 for following too closely or improper lane changes, and $50 for a bicycle law violation.4Justia. If You Miss the Deadline
The MVD is authorized to suspend your driver’s license without a preliminary hearing if its records show you failed to pay a penalty assessment within 30 days of the citation date.2Court Education NM. New Mexico Traffic Citations Manual This runs automatically off their records.
If the ticket required a court appearance and you didn’t show, the court will issue a bench warrant for your arrest, and your license may be flagged as suspended the next time you try to renew.1Motor Vehicle Division NM. Traffic Tickets A bench warrant means any future traffic stop can lead to an arrest.
What Paying Does to Your Driving Record
Paying a penalty assessment settles the fine, but it also counts as a conviction, and convictions add points to your record. The state uses a sliding scale by severity:5Motor Vehicle Division NM. Point System Regulations and Schedule
- 2 points: speeding 6–15 mph over, improper turn, improper passing, improper backing, failure to signal
- 3 points: careless driving, failure to obey a traffic sign or device, following too closely, failure to yield
- 4 points: failure to yield to an emergency vehicle
- 5 points: speeding 16–25 mph over
- 6 points: reckless driving, passing a school bus, racing on a public road
- 8 points: speeding 26 mph or more over
Hit 12 points inside 12 consecutive months and the MVD will suspend your license for a year. Between 7 and 10 points in a year, a judge can recommend a suspension of up to three months, and the MVD is required to follow that recommendation.5Motor Vehicle Division NM. Point System Regulations and Schedule One paid ticket can move you noticeably closer to those thresholds.
Before You Click Pay, Consider the Alternatives
Submitting payment is an admission that you committed the violation. Two options close the moment you pay, so weigh them first.
Contesting the Ticket
You can decline to pay and request a trial. The state must prove the violation beyond a reasonable doubt. If you’re found not guilty, you owe nothing and no points are assessed. If convicted, the fine itself cannot exceed the original penalty assessment amount, but the court adds a $20 docket fee plus other costs.2Court Education NM. New Mexico Traffic Citations Manual On a $25 seatbelt ticket that nearly doubles the cost; on a $200 speeding ticket it barely registers. The math depends on the strength of your case.
Defensive Driving
New Mexico courts can let drivers take an MVD-approved defensive driving course to reduce points, or in some cases dismiss the citation. It is not automatic. You have to contact the court that issued the ticket and request approval before enrolling. Courts are more willing to grant it for minor violations than serious ones.
When approved for point reduction, completing the course takes two points off per 12-month period, up to six points over any rolling three-year period. Courses run online through MVD-licensed providers and are accepted statewide. An insurance discount may also apply, which you should confirm with your carrier.
Once you pay, the conviction and its points are on your record, and the defensive driving door usually closes with them. If avoiding the insurance consequences matters, make the call to the court first.
