The White Plains road test is a New York State DMV skills exam held on Brockway Place, and passing it takes three things: complete paperwork, a vehicle the examiner will accept, and a short drive with fewer than 31 points in deductions. Where the Site Is and How to Book

What to Bring on Test Day
The examiner will turn you away before the drive starts if any of the following is missing:
- Your physical photo learner permit. A mobile ID is not accepted.
- Corrective lenses, if your permit requires them.
- Your original MV-278 or MV-285 certificate. Copies are not accepted.
- If you are under 18, form MV-262, the Certification of Supervised Driving, completed and signed by your parent or guardian. You must hand this to the examiner at every attempt.
- A licensed accompanying driver. If you drove yourself to the site, this person must be at least 21 with a valid physical license for the test vehicle. If they drove you, they must be at least 18.
- No extra passengers. Only you and the accompanying driver may be in the vehicle when you arrive.
For a Class DJ or MJ junior learner permit, the MV-262 certifies at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including at least 15 hours after sunset, with a parent or guardian’s signature confirming those hours.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Every new driver must finish the Pre-Licensing Course before the road test. It runs about five hours and produces the MV-278 certificate. Vehicle Requirements
Your car must have valid registration, current insurance, and a passing inspection. The examiner can reject it on the spot if anything is out of order. Functionally, it needs working turn signals, brake lights, a horn, mirrors with clear visibility, and tires with adequate tread. The front passenger door has to open from inside and outside, and the front passenger seatbelt must work. One detail catches people out. If the center console blocks the examiner’s access to the emergency brake, the car will be rejected. Some newer SUVs and sedans have consoles that put the parking brake out of reach from the passenger seat, so check this before test day if you are borrowing a vehicle.
What the Examiner Scores
The test begins the moment you pull away from the curb. The examiner watches whether you check mirrors, signal, and look over your shoulder before entering traffic. From there you will handle intersections, left and right turns, lane position, and speed appropriate to conditions.
Two maneuvers are specifically scored. For parallel parking, your wheels must end up no more than one foot from the curb.6New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. For the three-point turn, the examiner grades vehicle control and observation, and extra back-and-forth movements deduct points.
Beyond those, the examiner evaluates yielding to pedestrians, following distance, response to signs and signals, hazard anticipation, and general awareness. The drive usually lasts 10 to 15 minutes.
How the Points Add Up
Scoring works by deduction. Errors carry 5, 10, or 15 points. You fail if your total exceeds 30.
- 15-point errors: inability to parallel park or complete the three-point turn, excessive speed for conditions, driving too slowly, failing to yield to pedestrians, and poor steering control.
- 10-point errors: failing to observe when leaving the curb, poor judgment at intersections, inattention to signs and signals, improper lane usage, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, and poor braking.
- 5-point errors: failing to signal, not checking blind spots, wide or sharp turns, parking too far from the curb, extra maneuvers during the three-point turn, and poor clutch control on manual transmissions.
Dangerous errors such as running a stop sign, ignoring a red light, or creating a hazardous situation can end the test immediately regardless of your point total. The examiner will cut things short if they have to intervene for safety.
Most failures are not dramatic. They are accumulations: a missed blind-spot check here, a wide turn there, a hesitation at an intersection. Two 15-point errors and a single 5-point error already put you over. Practice until the good habits are automatic.
Getting Your Results
The examiner will not tell you at the end of the drive whether you passed. If you pass, an interim license becomes available online. Keep it with your photo learner permit as your temporary driving authorization. If You Fail
Your learner permit stays valid until its expiration date, and you can schedule another attempt after waiting at least 14 days.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Schedule and Take a Road Test
Your original permit application fee covers your first two attempts. If you fail both, you pay $10 for two additional tests before you can schedule again.8New York State. Schedule a Road Test There is no stated cap on total attempts as long as your permit remains valid and you pay the fees. Use the wait to review your score sheet and target the specific errors that cost you points.
Restrictions for Drivers Under 18

- Upstate New York: unsupervised driving is allowed from 5 AM to 9 PM, generally with no more than one passenger under 21 unless they are immediate family. Between 9 PM and 5 AM, unsupervised driving is limited to direct travel between home and work or school. Other nighttime driving requires a supervising driver at least 21.
- New York City: junior license holders cannot drive in the five boroughs at all.
- Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk counties): driving is allowed only under direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or authorized adult, with limited exceptions for daytime commuting to work or school.

Out-of-State and International Drivers
If you hold a valid license from another U.S. state, territory, or Canadian province, you do not need to take a road test in New York. You can exchange the license at a DMV office by surrendering it, passing a vision test, and paying a fee. Drivers licensed in a country other than Canada follow a different path. New York honors valid foreign licenses for visitors, but once you become a New York resident you must pass the written test, complete the pre-licensing course, and pass a road test at a site such as White Plains.
