How to Register a Car in SC Online: Renewals, Taxes, and Deadlines

You can renew an existing South Carolina vehicle registration online through the SCDMV, but you cannot complete an initial registration online yourself. If you just bought a car, the only online path is through a dealership enrolled in the state’s Electronic Registration and Titling program, which submits your paperwork for you. Private sales and out-of-state moves still require a trip to an SCDMV branch.

What the SCDMV Website Actually Lets You Do

The SCDMV’s online services for individual vehicle owners cover three registration-related tasks: renewing an existing registration, ordering a duplicate registration certificate, and replacing a lost or stolen decal.1SCDMV. Online Services First-time titling and registration is not on that list. If you bought from a private seller, moved to South Carolina with an out-of-state title, or otherwise need to put a vehicle on the state’s rolls for the first time, you’ll bring your documents to a branch in person.2SCDMV. Renewing Your Registration Online

Two things have to be true before the online renewal will go through. Your vehicle property taxes must be paid to your county, and the county must have notified the SCDMV that you paid. You’ll also need the name of your insurance company and a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card.3SCDMV. Renew My Registration

Many counties let you pay property taxes and registration fees together through their own online portals, which is the smoothest route. If your county doesn’t offer that, pay at the county treasurer’s office first, then either finish the renewal on the SCDMV site or wait for the county to send the payment through and mail the decal. After the taxes are paid, the SCDMV mails the decal the next working day.3SCDMV. Renew My Registration

South Carolina registration is biennial, so you renew every two years rather than every year.4SCDMV. Fees A few situations kick you back to a branch even for a renewal: an adjusted tax bill, an outstanding penalty, or a senior citizen discount that needs to be applied for the first time.

Renewal Fees

The base registration fee for most passenger cars is $40, covering the full two-year cycle. Owners aged 64 pay $38, and those 65 or older or with a qualifying disability pay $36. Paying online adds a card processing fee of $1 plus 1.7%, charged by the payment processor rather than the SCDMV.4SCDMV. Fees Property taxes are separate and go to the county.

New Purchases: The Dealer Electronic Program

When you buy from a licensed South Carolina dealer that participates in the Electronic Registration and Titling (ERT) program, the dealer submits titling and registration data to the SCDMV electronically on your behalf. It runs in two stages. On the day of sale, the dealer enters your information and issues a temporary tag. After that, the dealer finalizes the electronic application and sends in the supporting paperwork.5SCDMV. Electronic Vehicle Registration Program

Once that submission is complete, the SCDMV mails your license plate and registration directly to you. If there’s a lien, the title goes to your lienholder.5SCDMV. Electronic Vehicle Registration Program Not every dealership participates, so ask before you assume the paperwork is handled. If your dealer isn’t in the program, you’ll take the documents to a branch yourself.

When You Have to Go in Person

For a first-time registration through a private sale or an out-of-state move, plan on a branch visit with these items in hand:

  • A completed Form 400, the SCDMV Title and Registration Application.6South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Title and Registration Application (SCDMV Form 400)
  • The title, signed over to you by the seller, with the purchase price and odometer reading recorded.2SCDMV. Titles
  • A bill of sale signed by buyer and seller, showing the sale price minus any trade-in.2SCDMV. Titles
  • The original paid property tax receipt from your county treasurer.7SCDMV. Moving To SC – Vehicle
  • Proof of South Carolina liability insurance, including company name and policy number.

First-time registration also carries a one-time Infrastructure Maintenance Fee of 5% of the purchase price for dealer sales or 5% of fair market value for private sales, capped at $500.8South Carolina Legislature. Property Taxes Come First

The SCDMV won’t register any vehicle until county property taxes are paid. Contact your county auditor with the vehicle identification number to have a tax bill generated based on the vehicle’s assessed value and local millage rate, then pay at the county treasurer’s office. For online renewals, the SCDMV verifies payment automatically through county databases. For first-time registration at a branch, you have to bring the original receipt.7SCDMV. Moving To SC – Vehicle

Deadlines and Late Penalties

New residents have 45 days after moving to South Carolina to register a vehicle. For renewals, the state gives a 30-day grace period after your decal expires before driving the vehicle becomes a misdemeanor.9South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 56-3-840 – Delinquent Registration and License Penalties

Penalty fees start piling on before that. For a late renewal:

  • 1 to 14 days late: $10
  • 15 to 29 days late: $25
  • 30 to 90 days late: $50
  • Over 90 days late: $75

For a first-time registration missed past the 45-day window:

  • 46 to 60 days late: $10
  • 61 to 75 days late: $25
  • 76 to 135 days late: $50
  • Over 135 days late: $75

These stack on top of the normal registration cost.4SCDMV. Fees Past 30 days late on a renewal, the misdemeanor exposure is a separate problem from the fee.9South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 56-3-840 – Delinquent Registration and License Penalties

What Arrives in the Mail

Whether your renewal went through the SCDMV site or your new purchase went through dealer ERT, the license plate, registration decal, and registration certificate come to your address by mail. Financed vehicles have the title sent to the lienholder instead.5SCDMV. Electronic Vehicle Registration Program Processing usually takes a few business days, longer during high-volume periods. A dealer temporary tag or a temporary document from the branch keeps you legal in the meantime. Keep the registration certificate in the vehicle, and set a reminder two years out; since renewal depends on the county tax record, falling behind on property taxes will block the online renewal no matter how early you log in.
