To register a car in Wyoming, take the title, proof of liability insurance, and a photo ID to the treasurer’s office in the county where you live, within 60 days if you bought from a dealer, 45 days if you bought from a private party, or immediately if you just moved to the state with a vehicle you already own. You will pay a flat state fee, a county fee calculated from the vehicle’s factory price and age, and a one-time 4% sales or use tax if it hasn’t already been collected. Out-of-state vehicles also need a VIN inspection by a law enforcement officer before the title can transfer.
Deadlines That Apply to You
The clock depends on how you got the vehicle.1Justia. Wyoming Code Title 31 Chapter 2 Article 2 Section 31-2-201 – Registration Required Timelines
- Dealer purchase, in-state or out-of-state: 60 days from the date of purchase. You can drive on the dealer’s temporary permit during that window.
- Auctioneer purchase: 60 days, with a notarized auctioneer bill of sale acting as your temporary authorization to drive.
- Private-party purchase: 45 days. You can drive during this period as long as you carry the signed title.
New residents get no grace period on vehicles they already own. Registration is due as soon as you meet Wyoming’s residency definition, and your out-of-state plates stop being valid the same day.2Platte County, Wyoming. Registration Requirements You qualify as a resident if you are employed in Wyoming (narrow exceptions apply for full-time university and community college students and daily commuters from states with reciprocal agreements), or if you own, rent, or lease a home here and have been in the state for 120 days or more.
Documents to Bring
Car Bought in Wyoming
You’ll need a Wyoming title (or the title number), proof of liability insurance, and the dealer invoice if the vehicle is new. Title transfer happens at the county clerk’s office and registration happens at the county treasurer, so you may need to stop at both.3Wyoming Department of Transportation. Car Coming From Another State
Bring the out-of-state title, the current out-of-state registration, proof of insurance, and a photo ID. Any out-of-state title executed under the laws of the transferring state will be accepted, but all liens must be released or come with a lien release before the title can transfer.4Albany County, WY. Auto Titles
You will also complete Form MV-300A, the Application for Certificate of Title and VIN/HIN Inspection Form, which asks for buyer and seller information, VIN, factory price, odometer reading, and lien details.5Park County Wyoming. Application for Certificate of Title and VIN/HIN Inspection Form
VIN Inspection
Unless you bought the vehicle from a Wyoming dealership, an out-of-state title must be accompanied by a completed VIN inspection.4Albany County, WY. Auto Titles A Wyoming law enforcement officer performs it, not a dealer or mechanic. The officer confirms the VIN is displayed correctly and runs it through the National Crime Information Center database to check that the vehicle isn’t stolen.6Natrona County, WY. VIN Inspection
If the car is still out of state, any law enforcement officer in that jurisdiction can complete the out-of-state VIN inspection form for you.6Natrona County, WY. VIN Inspection Homemade, rebuilt or reconstructed, and kit-assembled vehicles also need VIN inspections even if they were previously titled in Wyoming.
Insurance You Need to Show
Proof of liability insurance is required every time you register, renew, or transfer a vehicle. Wyoming’s minimums are $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $20,000 for property damage. Bring your card or a digital copy; the treasurer’s office won’t process the registration without it.
What It Costs
County Fee
The county portion is your vehicle’s factory price multiplied by a depreciation percentage that drops with age, then multiplied by 3%. Minimum county fee is $5.7Wyoming Legislature. Wyoming Code 31-3-101 – Registration Fees and Exemptions
- 1st year of service: 3% of 60% of factory price
- 2nd year: 3% of 50%
- 3rd year: 3% of 40%
- 4th year: 3% of 30%
- 5th year: 3% of 20%
- 6th year and beyond: 3% of 15%
A car with a $35,000 factory price in its third year owes 3% of 40% of $35,000, or $420. By year six, that same vehicle’s county fee is $157.50. Factory price means the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not what you negotiated or financed.7Wyoming Legislature. Wyoming Code 31-3-101 – Registration Fees and Exemptions
State Fee
The state portion is flat. Passenger cars pay $30. Motorcycles, autocycles, and multipurpose vehicles pay $25.7Wyoming Legislature. Wyoming Code 31-3-101 – Registration Fees and Exemptions Trailers, noncommercial vehicles by weight, and commercial vehicles by gross weight follow separate schedules.
Sales or Use Tax
Wyoming charges a 4% sales or use tax on vehicle purchases, collected by the county treasurer at first registration. Sales tax applies if you bought in Wyoming; use tax applies if you bought outside the state and brought the car in. Either way, you pay 4% of the purchase price before plates are issued.8Laramie County, Wyoming. Vehicle Sales and Use Tax
You have 65 days from purchase to pay. After day 65, you owe a $25 penalty plus 1% interest per month. At day 75, the penalty jumps to $25 or 10% of the tax owed, whichever is greater, plus the ongoing 1% monthly interest. On a $30,000 vehicle, that 10% penalty alone is $120.9Laramie County, Wyoming. Motorcycles bought from a Wyoming dealer are the one exception: the dealer collects the sales tax at the point of sale, so the treasurer doesn’t.8Laramie County, Wyoming. Vehicle Sales and Use Tax
Where You Go and How You Pay
Registration is handled at the county treasurer’s office in the county where you live. Bring your documents, insurance proof, and payment for fees and taxes. Plates and registration stickers are issued the same day.3Wyoming Department of Transportation. Titles, Plates and Registration
Most offices take cash, checks, and credit cards, though some charge a convenience fee for card payments. Many counties also allow registration by mail: send your documents and a check, and the office mails your plates back.
Titles are handled by the county clerk, not the treasurer. Expect two stops if you’re transferring an out-of-state title or titling a new purchase.
Annual Renewal
Registration expires on the last day of your designated expiration month and renews every year. The month is printed on your registration slip and on the sticker on your plate.1Justia. Wyoming Code Title 31 Chapter 2 Article 2 Section 31-2-201 – Registration Required Timelines
There is no grace period after expiration.9Laramie County, Wyoming. Vehicle Registration Tips The renewal fee itself doesn’t increase if you’re late, and your expiration month doesn’t shift, so renewing in February for a January expiration keeps January as your renewal month going forward.10Converse County, WY. Frequently Asked Questions
You can renew online, by phone, by mail, or in person, at any county treasurer’s office in the state. Bring your last Wyoming registration (or the plate number) and current insurance proof. No title or VIN inspection is needed at renewal.11Park County Wyoming. Vehicle License
Driving on Expired Plates
Wyoming law prohibits operating a vehicle with expired or improper registration on a public road. The general penalty is a fine of up to $750, up to six months in jail, or both. Most stops result in a fine and an order to get the vehicle registered, but the statutory maximum is real if the tags have been expired for months.
What Wyoming Does Not Require
Wyoming does not require emissions testing or safety inspections for standard passenger vehicles. The only inspection you will encounter is the VIN inspection, and that applies only to out-of-state vehicles, homemade builds, rebuilt vehicles, and kit cars. Nothing else is checked at renewal.
If your vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, that is a different situation: federal law requires you to file IRS Form 2290 and show the stamped Schedule 1 to the treasurer before registration.12Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 E-filing produces a watermarked Schedule 1 within minutes; mailing takes about six weeks.13Internal Revenue Service. Trucking Tax Center
