To reinstate a revoked vehicle registration in Massachusetts, fix the problem that caused the revocation, make sure the responsible agency has notified the Registry of Motor Vehicles, and then pay the RMV a reinstatement fee of either $50 or $100 depending on the reason. The RMV will not accept the fee until the underlying issue is cleared, so the order matters.
Find Out Why Your Registration Was Revoked
The path back depends entirely on the cause. The RMV revokes registrations for a handful of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with how you drive:

- A payment to the RMV bounced, was rescinded, or wasn’t paid in full.
- You fell behind on child support, and the Department of Revenue Child Support Services Division directed the RMV to revoke under G.L. c. 90, § 22(g).
- You owe delinquent state taxes, and the DOR Collections Bureau requested revocation under G.L. c. 62C, § 47B.
- You missed a deadline on a court default suspension notice.
- You have unpaid civil motor vehicle infraction (CMVI) citations.

Clear the Underlying Issue
The RMV won’t take a reinstatement fee until the problem behind the revocation is resolved. People show up at Service Centers ready to pay and get turned away for this reason all the time.3MassDOT – RMV Division. Electronic Vehicle Registration (EVR) Registration Reinstatements
Insurance Cancellation
Insurance lapses are the most common trigger.4Mass.gov. Registration Reinstatement Job Aid – EVR Policies Get a valid policy and have your insurer notify the RMV that coverage is active. Insurers can do this electronically through the RMV’s web services or batch process. If you need to do it in person, bring an insurance-stamped Registration and Title Application (RTA) form to a Service Center. Once the RMV’s system shows active coverage on your vehicle, you can pay the reinstatement fee.
One useful exception: if both your new policy’s effective date and its policy change date come before the revocation date, the fee may be waived. This tends to happen when you switched insurers before the revocation took effect but the paperwork didn’t reach the RMV in time.3MassDOT – RMV Division. Unpaid Owner Citations
Pay the full citation balance, including any late fees, before doing anything else. You can pay through myRMV, by mail, or by calling the RMV Contact Center at 1-857-368-8000. Child Support, State Taxes, and Court Defaults
For these, the RMV can’t clear you. You resolve the obligation directly with the agency that requested the revocation: the DOR Child Support Services Division for support arrears, the DOR Collections Bureau for state taxes, and the issuing court for a default. Bad Payments to the RMV
If a check bounced or a payment was rescinded, you must make full restitution to the RMV, including any additional fees assessed, before the registration can be restored.2Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Non-Motor Vehicle Suspensions
Pay the Reinstatement Fee
The RMV charges two possible amounts:5Mass.gov. Schedule of Fees
- $50 if the revocation was for insurance cancellation.
- $100 for all other reasons, including unpaid citations and out-of-service orders.

Payment can go through the myRMV portal, by mail, or through the Contact Center at 1-857-368-8000. For insurance-related revocations, most of the work happens electronically between your insurer and the RMV, though a stamped RTA form has to be brought to a Service Center in person.3MassDOT – RMV Division. Note that registration reinstatement fees are separate from license reinstatement fees. If your license was also revoked, you’ll pay for each one independently.
Watch the Pre-Revocation Deadlines
Some deadlines run before the revocation takes effect, and meeting them can save you the fee entirely. For an insurance cancellation, you have until two days before the cancellation’s effective date to file a new insurance certificate with the RMV.1General Court of Massachusetts. Miss those windows and the revocation goes into effect. There is no automatic expiration; the registration stays revoked indefinitely until you fix the cause and pay the fee. You cannot wait it out.
Don’t Drive on a Revoked Registration
Operating a vehicle with a revoked registration is a criminal offense under G.L. c. 90, § 23. The penalties escalate hard:6General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 23
- First offense: a fine of $500 to $1,000, up to 10 days in jail, or both.
- Subsequent offenses: 60 days to one year in jail. There is no fine-only option.
A second conviction carries a mandatory minimum of 60 days. Every trip on a revoked registration after a first conviction risks that outcome.
What Else Reinstatement Doesn’t Fix
A revoked registration keeps accruing municipal excise tax. Your city or town will keep billing you until the registration is formally cancelled, not just revoked.2Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Expect higher insurance costs after a lapse. Insurers treat a coverage gap as a risk factor, and premiums often rise when you bind a new policy.
When To Bring in a Lawyer
Most reinstatements, especially the insurance-triggered ones, are administrative and can be handled without counsel. Legal help matters more when several revocations overlap, when you’re facing a criminal charge for driving on a revoked registration, or when the underlying obligation is being disputed with the DOR or a court.
