To reinstate your license online in Washington, log into License Express at secure.dol.wa.gov, work through each suspension the system shows on your record, and pay the reinstatement fee. That fee is $75 for non-alcohol suspensions and $170 for alcohol-related ones. Most administrative suspensions clear the same session you pay. Alcohol and drug cases go through the same portal, but only after your treatment program, interlock vendor, and insurer have filed their paperwork with the Department of Licensing.
Check Your Suspension Status First
Before you log in to pay anything, pull your record. Washington offers a free license-status check at fortress.wa.gov/dol/extdriveses that shows whether your license is suspended, what caused it, and what has to happen before reinstatement.1Washington State Department of Licensing. Driving Records Many drivers have more than one hold, and every one has to be resolved before the reinstatement will go through. An unpaid ticket from a few years back and a separate insurance lapse show up as independent actions with independent requirements.
The status tool also confirms whether your mandatory suspension period is up. You cannot reinstate early. If a single day remains on the clock, the portal will reject the request.
Which Suspensions Can Be Handled Online
License Express handles most administrative suspensions: unpaid traffic tickets, failure to appear in court, lapsed insurance. Pay the fee, make sure any required proof of insurance is on file, and the system processes the reinstatement immediately.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Suspended Driver License
Alcohol and drug-related suspensions can also be processed online, but only after the prerequisites are cleared outside the portal. Your substance use disorder program has to have reported your enrollment and participation to the DOL, your ignition interlock vendor has to have confirmed the device is installed, and your insurance company has to have filed the SR-22 electronically. The portal verifies all of that before it lets you pay.
Some cases can’t be handled online at all. Habitual traffic offender revocations require a formal hearing, and the DOL charges $375 for it.3Washington State Department of Licensing. If the status check tells you a hearing or medical clearance is needed, the online path is closed to you.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Gather everything before you log in. The portal does not save partial applications. Getting halfway through and realizing something is missing means starting over.
- Your Washington driver license number.
- Your date of birth, matching exactly what the DOL has on file.
- An SR-22 already on file, if your suspension requires proof of financial responsibility. Your insurance company files it electronically. You cannot upload it yourself.
- Ignition interlock verification, for DUI-related suspensions. The vendor reports installation directly to the DOL.
- Substance use disorder program enrollment on file, for DUI suspensions. The treatment agency or probation department submits this.
- A credit card or electronic check for the fee.
Enter your name and license number exactly as they appear on your legal documents. A single mismatched character trips a verification failure, and the system will not tell you which field caused it.
Using the License Express Portal
Go to secure.dol.wa.gov and either log in or create a License Express account. Choose license reinstatement, and the system pulls up every active suspension on your record. If you have multiple holds, they appear separately and have to be resolved in order.
The portal then runs automated checks against the DOL database. It confirms your suspension period has expired, your SR-22 is on file, any required interlock verification has been received, and any treatment enrollment has been reported. If something is missing, the system blocks reinstatement and tells you what’s outstanding. At that point you contact the party who owes the filing, your insurer or interlock vendor or treatment program, and try again once they submit.
Once the checks clear, you move to payment. After paying, you get a confirmation and a temporary driving authorization you can print. Keep that printout in your vehicle until the permanent card arrives. The DOL generally mails the physical license to your address on file within seven to ten business days, so verify your address before you finalize.
Reinstatement Fees
Washington sets two fee levels by statute:
- $75 for non-alcohol-related suspensions and revocations.
- $170 for suspensions or revocations tied to DUI, physical control violations, or administrative action under the implied consent law.
These amounts come from RCW 46.20.311 and appear on the DOL’s fee schedule.4Washington State Legislature. If you received day-for-day credit because you already served a suspension under a separate provision arising from the same incident, the DOL may waive the additional reissue fee for the credited portion.6Washington State Legislature. The SR-22 Requirement
An SR-22 is not a special type of insurance. It’s a certificate your insurance company files with the DOL to confirm you’re carrying at least the state-minimum liability coverage. You’ll need one if your suspension came from a conviction, a traffic infraction, an uninsured accident, or an unpaid judgment.7Washington State Department of Licensing. Washington requires you to keep the SR-22 in force for three years from the date you become eligible for reinstatement.7Washington State Department of Licensing. Financial Responsibility (SR-22) The clock starts at reinstatement, not when the original suspension began. If your coverage lapses at any point in those three years, the DOL will resuspend your license and you’ll pay another reinstatement fee to start over.
The filing itself is usually inexpensive, often $15 to $25 as a one-time fee from your insurer. The underlying insurance is where the cost sits. Carriers treat SR-22 drivers as high-risk and charge accordingly, and the spread between insurers is wide enough that shopping around is worth the time.
DUI and Alcohol-Related Reinstatements
Alcohol cases are where most people get stuck. Under RCW 46.20.311, the DOL cannot reinstate your license after a DUI or physical control conviction until three separate conditions are met: you are enrolled in and participating in an approved substance use disorder program, your ignition interlock device is installed and verified, and your SR-22 is on file.4Washington State Legislature. The treatment program reports directly to the DOL. Showing up with a completion certificate does not work. The designated agency or probation department must submit the report confirming your enrollment and satisfactory participation. If that report hasn’t been received, the portal rejects your application even if you’ve actually completed the program.
Ignition Interlock Compliance
The interlock period uses a tolling system, meaning you only get credit for days the device is installed and functioning in your vehicle. Removing the device early, tampering with it, or falling out of compliance stops the clock until the device is properly reinstalled. At the end of your IID period, the vendor submits a certificate of compliance to the DOL, but only if you had no violations in the final four months of the requirement: no failed breath tests, no missed retests, no skipped service appointments.8Washington State Department of Licensing. Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Without that certificate, the reinstatement won’t clear.
Implied Consent Suspensions
Refusing a breath or blood test at a DUI stop triggers a separate administrative suspension under Washington’s implied consent law. A first refusal is a one-year revocation. A second or subsequent refusal within seven years is a two-year revocation.6Washington State Legislature. RCW 46.20.3101 These run alongside any suspension from the DUI conviction itself, though the DOL grants day-for-day credit so you don’t serve the same time twice for the same incident.
After You Reinstate
Print the temporary authorization as soon as the portal confirms reinstatement. That document is your legal proof of driving privileges while the physical card is in the mail. Verify your mailing address before you finalize, because the DOL ships the permanent card to whatever is on file.
If you were required to file an SR-22, the three-year maintenance period starts running from your reinstatement date. Any lapse triggers automatic resuspension. Confirm with your insurer that the policy is on autopay or otherwise protected, because a billing error on their end can suspend your license without any action from you. Three clean years of maintained coverage, and the DOL releases the financial responsibility requirement for good.
What Reinstatement Doesn’t Cover
Two things worth knowing if either applies to you. If you hold a commercial driver license and the suspension involved drugs or alcohol, reinstating your Washington license does not clear your status in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. That is a separate federal return-to-duty process involving a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional, prescribed education or treatment, a follow-up evaluation, and a negative return-to-duty test.9Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The other item is REAL ID. Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies no longer accept standard driver licenses for domestic flights or entry to federal facilities; the compliant version carries a gold star in the upper right corner.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If your previous license wasn’t REAL ID-compliant, reinstatement alone won’t upgrade it. That requires a DOL office visit with identity and residency documents. If your card already has the gold star, the reinstated license keeps that designation.
