To reinstate a suspended registration in Alabama, go to your county license plate issuing official with proof of current liability insurance and pay a $200 reinstatement fee for a first suspension or $400 for a second or later suspension within two registration years.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration Most suspensions come from the state’s random insurance verification system, so the reinstatement turns on proving you now have coverage and paying what you owe.
Where to Go and What to Bring
You can handle the reinstatement at your county license plate issuing official, the circuit clerk of any county, or the Administrative Office of Courts. The county tag office is the usual choice.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration
Bring two things:
- Proof of current liability insurance meeting Alabama’s minimums of $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. A commercial auto policy, a motor vehicle liability bond, or a cash deposit receipt from the State Treasurer all count.2Alabama Legislature. - Payment for the reinstatement fee.
The policy does not have to be in the registered owner’s name. Alabama accepts proof in another person’s name as long as the VIN on the insurance document matches the VIN on the vehicle.4Alabama Administrative Code. What the Fee Is, and When It’s Waived
The fee is $200 for a first violation and $400 for a second or subsequent violation within two registration years.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration
If the vehicle actually was insured on the verification date, the fee is waived entirely and the suspension is terminated. This covers situations where the online system got it wrong or your insurer was slow to report your coverage. Bring documentation showing coverage was in force on that specific date, and the official reinstates your registration without charging the fee.1Alabama Legislature. If the Vehicle Wasn’t Being Driven
There’s an alternative path if the vehicle was stored or inoperable during the coverage lapse and you don’t need it on the road right away. You surrender the registration and license plate to your local licensing official within 30 days of the suspension notice, and the reinstatement fee is waived. You have to meet all four of these conditions:
- You surrender the registration and plate within 30 days of receiving the suspension notice.
- You haven’t already used the stored or inoperable exemption during the current registration period for that vehicle.
- The vehicle wasn’t in any accident on a public road during the lapse.
- Neither you nor anyone else driving the vehicle received a citation while operating it during the lapse.5Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-11 – Online Insurance Verification System – Notification Upon Inability to Verify Existing Insurance; Proof of Coverage; Penalties
The current registration is revoked for the rest of the registration period, so when you want to drive again you’ll need a brand-new registration and plate, along with evidence that the vehicle genuinely wasn’t in use during the lapse.6Cornell Law Institute. Don’t Drive on It First
Driving a vehicle with a suspended registration under Alabama’s mandatory insurance laws carries escalating consequences within a two-year registration period. On a first stop, an officer directs the vehicle to be moved to a safe place off the roadway. On a second, the officer calls a tow truck to haul it to a location you choose, and you pay the towing and storage charges before it’s released. On a third or later stop, the vehicle is impounded and stays impounded until you satisfy the insurance requirement and pay the towing, impoundment, and storage fees.7Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-16 – Penalties
Operating a vehicle without insurance is a Class C misdemeanor, and a second conviction under the suspension statute is a Class B misdemeanor.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration Handle the reinstatement before you drive.
What You Still Owe After Reinstatement
Reinstatement isn’t the finish line. After a first violation, the Department of Revenue forwards your information to the Director of Public Safety, who requires you to carry insurance for one year under Alabama’s financial responsibility statutes. After a second or subsequent violation, that mandatory coverage period runs for two registration years.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration
During that period, your insurer may have to file proof of coverage directly with the state. A lapse or cancellation triggers another suspension at the higher fee tier. Continuous coverage is the only reliable way out.
