To remove the organ donor designation from your Michigan license, cancel your entry in the Michigan Organ Donor Registry and then order a replacement license without the heart symbol. The registry cancellation takes a few minutes online; the new license is a separate step with its own fee. Both matter, because the heart on your card and your name in the state’s donor database are tracked separately.
Four Ways to Cancel Your Registry Entry
Michigan gives you four ways to remove yourself from the donor registry:
- Log into your Michigan Secretary of State online account and cancel your registration electronically.
- Visit any Secretary of State branch office with your driver’s license or state ID and ask to be removed.
- Submit a removal request through the Gift of Life Michigan website, the organization that maintains the registry.
- Cancel through Donate Life America, the national platform that coordinates with Michigan’s state registry.

The Heart Symbol and the Registry Are Not the Same
This is where people go wrong. The heart on your license is a visual indicator on a physical card. The registry is a confidential database the Department of State maintains in partnership with Gift of Life Michigan.2State of Michigan. Organ Donation
Under Michigan law, revoking, suspending, or canceling a driver’s license that displays the donor symbol does not invalidate the anatomical gift itself.3Michigan Legislature. If your name stays on the registry, procurement organizations can still find your recorded consent when they check, which they do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.4Michigan Legislature. Order a Replacement License
Once you’ve cancelled the registry entry, order a replacement license to drop the heart symbol. A standard replacement costs $9. An enhanced license replacement costs $24.5State of Michigan. File a Formal Refusal If You Want to Block Family Consent
Cancelling your registry entry removes your recorded consent. It does not stop your family from authorizing donation on your behalf after you die. If you want to prevent that too, Michigan law lets you file a “refusal,” a separate legal record stating that no part of your body may be donated.6Michigan Legislature. You can create a refusal in any of these ways:
- Sign a written record stating your refusal. If you can’t sign, another person can sign at your direction, but the signing must be witnessed by at least two adults, one of whom has no stake in the outcome.
- Include the refusal in your will. It is valid whether or not the will is admitted to probate, and even if the will is later invalidated.
- State your refusal verbally during a terminal illness or injury to at least two adults, at least one of whom is disinterested.

Who Can Still Say Yes If You Only Cancel
Without a formal refusal, Michigan law lets specific people authorize donation after your death, in priority order:
- An agent you designated with authority to make healthcare or anatomical gift decisions, such as a patient advocate
- Your spouse
- Your adult children
- Your parents
- Your adult siblings
- Your adult grandchildren
- Your grandparents
- An adult who showed special care and concern for you
- Your guardian at the time of death
- A state-assigned person authorized to make medical decisions for you, such as a public ward custodian or correctional facility personnel
The highest-priority person reasonably available makes the call. When several people share the same priority level, any one of them can authorize donation unless another in that group objects, in which case a majority of available members decides.8Michigan Legislature. Check the National Registry Too
Michigan’s registry is not the only one. The National Donate Life Registry, operated by Donate Life America, records donation preferences separately, and donation professionals check both registries at the time of death. If you ever signed up at RegisterMe.org or through the iPhone Health App, cancelling in Michigan will not clear that national entry. You have to remove yourself from both. Tell Your Family
Paperwork only goes so far. Emergency situations move fast, and healthcare teams may approach your family before anyone pulls up a registry. If your spouse or parents don’t know you removed your donor status, they may consent under the belief that you would have wanted it, and under MCL 333.10109 they have the legal authority to do so unless you filed a formal refusal.8Michigan Legislature.
