How to Renew a Georgia Driver’s License Over 65

To renew a Georgia driver’s license at age 65 or older, you can go online, visit a Department of Driver Services (DDS) customer service center, or, in limited cases, renew by mail.¹ The one requirement that sets senior renewal apart is a vision screening every cycle.² A Georgia license is valid for eight years, and the fee is $32 at a service center or $27 online.³

Your Three Renewal Options

Online

Georgia lets drivers 64 and older renew online once vision documentation is on file. Log into your DDS Online Services account and choose “Submit Vision Documents” under Online Licensing Services. Upload a completed Vision Report Form (DDS-MR-274) or an equivalent exam report from your eye doctor, signed and dated within the last two years by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.¹ DDS will email one of three responses: approved, denied, or incomplete. If approved, you finish the renewal online and pay $27 instead of $32.³ If the results are denied, you’ll need to finish at a service center.

In Person

Appointments are no longer required for license renewals at DDS customer service centers.⁴ You can walk into any location, take the vision screening on site, and finish everything in one visit. Fill out the online License/ID/Permit Form on the DDS website before you go to save time at the counter. Staff will capture a new photo, collect the $32 fee, and give you a temporary paper license; you can also pull one from your DDS Online Services account.⁵

By Mail

Mail renewal is available under limited circumstances for U.S. citizens who cannot renew in person.¹ DDS recommends sending your package at least 60 days before expiration, because applications take roughly 30 days to process and are handled first come, first served.

The Vision Screening

Georgia law requires every driver 64 or older to pass a vision test at each renewal.² For a regular non-commercial license, the standard is at least 20/60 vision in one eye and a horizontal field of at least 140 degrees, with or without corrective lenses.⁶

At a service center, a staff member gives the test on the spot. If you’d rather use your own eye doctor, have them complete Form DDS-MR-274. It must include visual acuity, horizontal perception degrees, or monocular field of vision, and it has to be signed and dated within two years of your renewal.¹ Getting the exam done before you visit saves a trip if the results are borderline, since your doctor can talk through options rather than having DDS deny the renewal at the counter.

Do You Need REAL ID Documents

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable identification such as a passport to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.⁷ Georgia REAL ID licenses carry either a gold or black star, and both mean the same thing.⁸ If your current license already shows one of those stars, a routine renewal doesn’t require you to bring those documents again.

If you’re upgrading to REAL ID for the first time, bring originals or certified copies from three categories:⁹

Identity, one document: a certified birth certificate, unexpired U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship.
Social Security number: verified electronically, but bring a Social Security card, W-2, 1099, pay stub, or tax return showing the full number if the system can’t confirm it.
Georgia residency, two documents from separate sources: utility bills, phone bills, a mortgage statement, lease, or bank statement dated within the last six months and showing your name and street address. P.O. boxes aren’t accepted.

If your name has changed since the identity document was issued, bring certified copies of the marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders that trace the change.⁹

Fee, Timing, and When Your Card Arrives

The standard fee for an eight-year Georgia license is $32. Renewing online or through the DDS 2 GO app saves $5, for a total of $27.³ You can start the renewal up to 150 days before your license expires.¹

After the renewal is complete, DDS issues an interim license you can use while the permanent card is produced and mailed. Allow up to 45 days for it to arrive at the address on file.⁵ If it hasn’t come by then, contact DDS to check the status.

If Your License Has Already Expired

Once a Georgia license has been expired for two years or more, a straight renewal is no longer available. You have to retake the road signs test, road rules test, road skills test, and vision exam.¹ That’s a significant burden if you haven’t taken a driving test in decades.

Driving on an expired license is treated as a misdemeanor under Georgia law. A first conviction within five years carries two days to 12 months in jail and a fine between $500 and $1,000.¹⁰ The statute covers expired and suspended licenses alike, so overlooking an expiration date can carry the same exposure as a suspension.

If You’ve Decided to Stop Driving

Georgia lets you voluntarily surrender your license at any DDS customer service center. You fill out the Affidavit for Voluntary Surrender (Form DDS-577) and can apply for a state ID card during the same visit.⁵ A standard Georgia ID is $32 for eight years, the same as a license, with reduced-fee options in specific situations.³
