You can renew an Arizona driver’s license online at AZMVDNow.gov, the Motor Vehicle Division’s official portal, and the same site handles vehicle registration renewals. A standard renewal takes about ten minutes, your record updates instantly, and the physical card or sticker arrives by mail within roughly 15 days.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona MVD: Online Renewal of Driver Licenses Is Here! Some situations force an office visit instead, so the first step is letting the portal check your record.
Can You Actually Renew Online
Most Class D and Class M license holders qualify.2Department of Transportation. Renew Your License When you log in, the portal immediately tells you whether yours does. You’ll be routed to an in-person visit if any of these apply:
- Your photo is more than 12 years old. Arizona requires a fresh photo every 12 years and sends a notice when it’s time.3Department of Transportation. When Will I Need to Update My Photo?
- You hold a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement. Federal rules require in-person identity verification, and you’ll retake the hazmat knowledge test at an MVD office.4Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona MVD: Renew Your Driver License Online
- The MVD has flagged your record for a vision test or updated identity documents, usually for medical or compliance reasons.2Department of Transportation. Renew Your License
- You want a Travel ID (Arizona’s REAL ID) and the MVD doesn’t already have qualifying identity documents on file.
CDL holders without a hazmat endorsement can renew online if their address hasn’t changed, a valid primary identity document is on file, and their credential is in good standing.4Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona MVD: Renew Your Driver License Online
Professional licenses issued by boards (behavioral health, physician assistants, and the like) don’t go through the MVD portal at all. Each board runs its own renewal system with its own continuing education rules. If you’re looking to renew that kind of credential, contact the board directly.
Why Many Arizonans Don’t Actually Need to Renew
Arizona is unusual: a standard license issued before you turn 65 stays valid until your 65th birthday, which can be decades from the issue date. After 65, renewals happen every five years and must be done in person.5Department of Transportation. From the Director: Extending Driver License Renewals for Older Adults During that long stretch, you’re still called in for a new photo every 12 years.3Department of Transportation. When Will I Need to Update My Photo?
So if you think you’re due for a renewal, log in and check. Many people who assume they need one really need a photo update or a Travel ID upgrade.
What to Have Ready
Before signing in, gather:
- Your driver’s license number or vehicle plate number, which the portal uses to pull your record.
- Your current mailing address. Update it in the portal first if it has changed; for CDL online renewals, the address must match what’s already on file.4Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona MVD: Renew Your Driver License Online
- A payment method. The MVD accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and eCheck.6Department of Transportation. What Forms of Payment Are Accepted?
- A passing emissions test on file if you’re renewing a vehicle registration in the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas. Test no sooner than 90 days before expiration.7Department of Transportation. Emissions Testing

Registration costs combine three pieces: a base registration fee of $4.50 to $9.00 depending on vehicle type, a $1.50 air quality fee, and a vehicle license tax based on the vehicle’s depreciated value. That tax starts from 60 percent of the manufacturer’s base retail price and drops 16.25 percent for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona. The rate is $2.80 per $100 of assessed value for new vehicles and $2.89 for used.10ServiceArizona. ServiceArizona Fees Page A brand-new $25,000 car works out to roughly $420 in its first year.
A Note on Travel ID
Since May 7, 2025, boarding a domestic flight or entering certain federal facilities requires a REAL ID-compliant credential or another acceptable document such as a passport.11Transportation Security Administration. If You Miss the Deadline
State law requires you to apply for driver license renewal before your license expires.13Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 28-3171 – Driver License Expiration and Renewal There is no general grace period. Veterans get six months after discharge from active duty if their license expired during service, and residents who are out of state when the license expires may qualify for an extension.
Vehicle registration has a defined penalty: $8 for the first delinquent month, plus $4 for each additional month, up to $100.14Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 28-2162 – Delinquent Registration; Penalty The MVD can waive the penalty if you prove the vehicle wasn’t driven on Arizona roads during the lapse. Either way, don’t let an easy online renewal slide.
If You Can’t Finish Online
When the portal sends you to an office (new photo, vision screening, identity documents), you have two options beyond a standard MVD office. Arizona contracts with authorized third-party providers around the state that handle many of the same transactions. They often move faster than a busy MVD office, especially in metro Phoenix, and may charge a convenience fee on top of state fees.15Department of Transportation. Authorized Third Party Providers
