To renew a Texas plumbing license, log in to the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) online portal within two months of your expiration date, confirm your continuing education and fingerprints are on file, upload a current Certificate of Insurance if you’re a Responsible Master Plumber, answer the disclosure questions, and pay the renewal fee for your license type.1Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. When You Can Renew
The TSBPE staggers expiration dates across the year, so there’s no single statewide deadline. Your specific date appears on your license card and in the board’s online records. The online portal opens the renewal window two months before that date, so you can’t get it done six months early.1Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Apply / Renew Online If your date has already passed, the system still accepts an online renewal for up to 275 days after expiration, with late fees added.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Continuing Professional Education
Master Plumbers, Journeyman Plumbers, and Plumbing Inspectors must complete six hours of board-approved continuing professional education each year before renewing.3Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Texas Administrative Code – Licensing and Registration – Section: 365.14 Continuing Professional Education and Training Requirements The curriculum breaks down as:
- One hour on the statutes and rules that govern licensed plumbers and registrants in Texas.
- Five hours on the current International Plumbing Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, International Residential Code, or another code the board has adopted.
The provider has to be board-approved. If your hours aren’t in before you try to renew, the portal will reject your application. Six-hour packages typically run $70 to $85, though pricing varies. Finish early enough that the provider’s records post to the board before your window opens.
Fingerprints
Every license and registration holder must have fingerprints on file with the TSBPE. It’s a one-time requirement, not something you repeat each cycle.4Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. How to Renew a License or Registration Prints are submitted electronically through IdentoGO, which forwards them to the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI for a criminal history check.5Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Fingerprint Instructions for Plumbers If you were licensed before the fingerprint mandate and never submitted, your renewal won’t process until you do. Schedule the appointment well before your expiration date so an IdentoGO backlog doesn’t hold things up.
Insurance (RMPs Only)
If you serve as the Responsible Master Plumber (RMP) for a company, you must carry commercial general liability insurance at all times and submit a current Certificate of Insurance with the renewal. Coverage has to be at least $300,000 per occurrence, and the policy must extend to every type of plumbing work performed under your license, including LP-gas, medical gas piping, and multipurpose residential fire protection sprinkler systems where applicable.6Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Texas Administrative Code – Licensing and Registration – Section: 367.6 Responsibilities of RMP-Insurance Required Journeyman Plumbers, Tradesman Plumber-Limited holders, Plumbing Inspectors, and Apprentices who aren’t designated as an RMP don’t submit insurance documentation.

Renewing Online, Step by Step
Nearly all renewals go through the TSBPE’s online portal.1Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Apply / Renew Online
- Log in to the TSBPE licensing portal with your email and password.
- Under “Manage your license information,” select the license you’re renewing. If you hold more than one credential, use the dropdown next to your highest-ranking one.
- Choose “Renewal” from the dropdown and click Select.
- Answer the disclosure questions about criminal history, disciplinary actions, and current employment.
- Submit the application, then click Pay Now to pay through the Texas.gov payment system.
Before you start, check that your mailing address in the system is current. The board mails your new pocket card to the address on file, and a card sent to an old address won’t be forwarded. If you’re an RMP, have the Certificate of Insurance ready to upload during the process.
After You Submit
Once you pay the fee and your fingerprint and CPE obligations are satisfied, the renewal processes immediately. The new pocket card typically mails within a day or two.4Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. How to Renew a License or Registration You can confirm your new expiration date through the TSBPE’s public license search tool. The online record updates before the card arrives, so it’s the fastest confirmation that the renewal went through.
If something stalls your renewal, such as a missing fingerprint record, incomplete CPE, or an unresolved disclosure answer, the board will contact you. Don’t read silence as approval. Check the public search tool to verify the new expiration date is posted.
If You Miss the Deadline
An expired license isn’t immediately canceled, but late fees climb fast:
- Expired 90 days or less: 1.5 times the standard renewal fee. For a Master Plumber, that’s $75 plus a $37.50 late fee, totaling $112.50.7Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Master Plumber
- Expired more than 90 days but less than two years: double the standard fee. For a Master Plumber, $75 plus a $75 late fee, totaling $150.
- Expired more than two years: you cannot renew. You have to reinstate by registering as a Plumber’s Apprentice again and passing all applicable exams under the current eligibility rules.11Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. License Types
The two-year cliff is the one that catches people. A Master Plumber whose license sits expired for two years and a day doesn’t just owe a bigger fee. They start over, accumulating apprentice hours and retaking the Journeyman and Master exams. Renewing even a day late is better than letting the clock run out.
Don’t Work on an Expired License
Performing plumbing work with an expired license is treated as working without a license. The TSBPE’s enforcement division can impose civil penalties of $50 to $1,000 per violation, with each day of continued unlicensed work counting as a separate offense.12Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Compact with Texans The board can also take disciplinary action against the license itself, and customers harmed by unlicensed work may have further legal remedies.
Active-Duty Military Exemption
If you’re on active military duty and miss your renewal, Texas law shields you from penalty fees. Any state licensing agency must exempt active-duty service members from increased fees or other penalties for failing to renew on time, provided you can show the delay was caused by your military service.13State of Texas. Texas Occupations Code Title 2, Chapter 55, Section 55-002 – Exemption From Penalty Military spouses relocating to Texas may also qualify for expedited licensing. Contact the TSBPE to confirm what documentation they need.
