To renew an Arkansas driver’s license, you can go online or visit any Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) Revenue Office up to 90 days before your expiration date. A standard Class D renewal costs $40 and keeps you on the road for another eight years.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Can You Renew Online?
Online renewal is the fastest option, but it only works if nothing about your license is changing. You can use the DFA website if your current license is still valid, your name and address are the same, and you’re keeping the same class of license.3Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Do You Have What You Need? The system verifies you with your license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number, then mails the new card to the address on file. A small convenience fee is added to the base cost.
You have to renew in person if:
- Your license has already expired.
- You need to update your name or address.
- You want to upgrade to a REAL ID.
- You hold a commercial driver’s license.
- You’ve been flagged for a medical review.
In-person renewals happen at any DFA Revenue Office. You’ll take a new photo and pass a vision screening no matter why you’re there.
What to Bring to a Standard Renewal
If you’re renewing a standard license in person with no changes, you don’t actually need to bring anything with you. The office handles the vision test and the new photo, and that’s the visit.3Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Do You Have What You Need?
Non-citizens are the exception. You must prove lawful presence at every renewal, using documents such as a valid Permanent Resident Card (I-551), an Employment Authorization Card (I-766), or a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94 form.4Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. REAL ID Documents
Upgrading to a REAL ID during your renewal means bringing three categories of documents to the office:
- Proof of identity — one document such as your current license, a U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, a military ID, or a marriage certificate.
- Proof of Social Security number — the actual Social Security card. The DFA will not accept a W-2, a pay stub, or any substitute.
- Proof of Arkansas residency — two documents dated within the last six months, such as a utility bill, bank statement, current lease or mortgage statement, insurance policy, or a recent state or federal tax return.
If the document you’re using as proof of identity also shows a residential address, it can count as one of your two residency documents.4Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. The Vision Exam
Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening for both acuity and visual fields. You need at least 20/40 uncorrected vision for an unrestricted license. Corrected vision of 20/50 gets you a license restricted to driving with corrective lenses; 20/60 limits you to daytime driving. If you’re blind in one eye but have 20/40 or better in the other, you’ll be restricted to driving with an outside sideview mirror. If your vision doesn’t meet the minimum, you may be referred for a medical evaluation before the DFA will issue the renewal.
Fees
A standard Class D renewal is $40 for eight years.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Non-Commercial Information (NCL) A commercial license renewal is $42, with an added $3 to $5 for each endorsement you carry. Revenue Offices take cash, checks, money orders, and major credit or debit cards. Online renewals require electronic payment and add a small processing fee.
Upgrading to REAL ID costs nothing extra beyond the standard renewal fee. You’re paying for the renewal itself; the documents are the only added burden.
Renewing With a Name or Address Change
Arkansas law requires you to notify the Office of Driver Services in writing within 10 days of moving or changing your name.6Justia Law. Arkansas Code Title 27-16-506 – Notice of Change of Address or Name That window is tighter than most people realize.
For a name change, bring an original or certified copy of the legal document behind it: a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Your new name has to already match Social Security Administration records before the DFA can update your license, so update SSA first if you haven’t.
Address changes can be done online at no charge, but the DFA won’t issue a new physical card for an address-only update.7Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Drivers If you want the new address printed on your card, or you’re rolling the change into your renewal, go in person with proof of the new address (utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, or bank statement dated within the last six months). P.O. boxes don’t count as a primary residence.
REAL ID and Air Travel
This is the piece of the renewal decision most Arkansas drivers need to think through. As of May 7, 2025, a standard (non-REAL ID) Arkansas license is no longer accepted as ID at airport security. If you fly domestically without a REAL ID, you’ll need another federally accepted document such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or military ID.8Transportation Security Administration. Starting February 1, 2026, travelers who arrive without acceptable ID can pay a $45 fee to use TSA’s ConfirmID service. It’s an expensive fallback. TSA will accept expired IDs for up to two years past expiration, but only if the expired document was itself an acceptable form (a REAL ID, passport, or military ID), not a standard state license.8Transportation Security Administration. If your renewal is coming up and you fly, upgrade to REAL ID at the same visit. If your renewal isn’t due for a while and you fly regularly, a separate trip to the DFA is worth it.
Commercial Driver’s License Renewal
CDL renewal has to happen in person. You can’t use the online system, and you’ll need to bring your current Medical Examiner’s Certificate along with your other documents. Any CDL holder driving commercially in interstate commerce must keep a valid ME Certificate on file with the DFA. Let it lapse and your commercial privileges are downgraded — you won’t be legally eligible to drive a vehicle that requires a CDL.9Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Active-Duty Military Stationed Out of State
If you’re on active duty and living outside Arkansas, your license will not expire while you’re away. You do need to apply for an official extension through the Office of Driver Services; once approved, the extended license is valid until 60 days after you separate or are honorably discharged.10Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. If Your License Has Already Expired
Arkansas doesn’t offer a grace period. The day after your expiration date, you’re no longer legally authorized to drive, and how bad it gets at the DFA depends on how long the license has been dead:
- Expired 1 to 31 days: you can renew in person without additional testing, but online renewal is off the table.
- Expired more than 31 days: you’ll have to pass a written knowledge test at an Arkansas State Police testing site before the DFA will issue your renewal.
- Expired for an extended period: the DFA may require a full driving exam on top of the written and vision tests, and reinstatement fees can apply if the license was suspended for failure to renew.
Driving on a cancelled, suspended, or revoked license is a misdemeanor in Arkansas, punishable by two to six months in jail and fines up to $500.11Justia Law. Arkansas Code Title 27-16-303 – Driving With Invalid License – Fines and Penalties That statute is aimed at cancelled, suspended, or revoked licenses specifically, but driving on an expired license is still illegal and will get you a citation and fines.
The 90-day early renewal window exists so you don’t end up in any of these situations. Set a reminder for three months before your expiration month and handle it early, especially if a name change, an address update, or a REAL ID upgrade is in the mix.
