To renew your car registration in California, you can go online, use a DMV Now kiosk, mail in your renewal notice, or visit a field office in person. The DMV mails a renewal notice about 60 days before your registration expires, and as long as your smog certification and insurance are already on file electronically, the whole thing takes a few minutes. Miss the expiration date and penalties start the next day.
What You Need Before You Start
Your renewal notice contains almost everything the DMV needs from you, including a barcode for kiosk use and an itemized breakdown of your fees.1California Department of Motor Vehicles. Your vehicle also needs active liability insurance recorded with the DMV. Insurers report policy data electronically for private-use vehicles, so the DMV usually has your coverage on file already.3California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Evidence of Financial Responsibility If there’s a gap or your insurer hasn’t transmitted current data, the renewal will stall. You can submit proof of insurance through the DMV website when that happens.
Moved since your last renewal? Update your address first so the new tags arrive at the right place. The form is the DMV Change of Address request (DMV 14), and you can submit it online, by mail, or at any field office.4State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Whether You Need a Smog Check
Most gasoline-powered vehicles need a biennial smog certification before the DMV will process a renewal. The test has to be done at a licensed smog station, which transmits the results electronically to the DMV.5California Legislative Information. California Code HSC 44011 No paper certificate is required at the DMV as long as the station’s submission went through.

- Cars eight model years old or newer, though the DMV collects a smog abatement fee instead.
- Gasoline vehicles model year 1975 and older, which are permanently exempt.
- Diesel vehicles model year 1997 and older, or any diesel with a gross vehicle weight rating above 14,000 pounds.
- Fully electric vehicles.
- Motorcycles, regardless of age.
Not every renewal year requires a smog check even for vehicles in scope. Your renewal notice will tell you whether one is due this cycle.
Four Ways to Renew
Online
The fastest option for most people. Go to the DMV’s Vehicle Registration Renewal page and enter your plate number and the last five digits of your VIN. Payment is by credit card, debit card, or checking account.2State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. After payment, your confirmation receipt serves as temporary proof until the tags arrive by mail.
DMV Now Kiosk
The DMV runs kiosks at retail locations and DMV offices across the state. Bring your renewal notice with the Renewal Identification Number visible in the top left, or your current registration card. The kiosk prints your new registration card and year sticker on the spot.7California State Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV Kiosks FAQs Many kiosks accept cash, which makes them useful if you don’t have a card. Kiosks cannot process address changes or accept proof of insurance, so resolve those separately first.

Mail early enough that your payment arrives before the expiration date, because penalties start the day after registration lapses. Your new card and sticker come back by mail, typically within two weeks.
In Person at a Field Office
Walk into any DMV field office or schedule an appointment online. A representative verifies your documentation, processes payment, and usually hands you the registration card and sticker during the same visit. This is the best route if you need to resolve multiple issues at once, like an address change, insurance verification, or a registration hold.
Through an Authorized Business Partner
California’s Business Partner Automation program lets private companies process renewals at their own locations and issue plates, stickers, and registration cards directly.9California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Business Partner Program The DMV charges a $6 transaction fee, and the partner may add its own service fee. AAA offices and some auto dealerships participate.
What It Costs
Your total is built from several layers of fees that depend on your vehicle’s value, weight, and county:10California Department of Motor Vehicles. Registration Fees
- A base registration fee charged to all vehicles.
- A California Highway Patrol fee of $34 for standard vehicles.
- The Vehicle License Fee, which is 0.65% of your vehicle’s purchase price or current market value. This is the biggest variable: a $40,000 vehicle pays $260, a $10,000 vehicle pays $65. The VLF is tax-deductible on your income tax return.
- A transportation improvement fee based on vehicle value.
- County and district fees that fund local transportation and air quality programs.

What Happens If You’re Late
Penalties start the day after your registration expires and escalate on a set schedule that combines a percentage of your VLF with flat registration and CHP late fees:11State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Penalties
- 1 to 10 days late: 10% of the VLF, plus $10 registration and $10 CHP late fees.
- 11 to 30 days late: 20% of the VLF, plus $15 registration and $15 CHP late fees.
- 31 days to one year: 60% of the VLF, plus $30 registration and $30 CHP late fees.
- One to two years: 80% of the VLF, plus $50 registration and $50 CHP late fees.
- Over two years: 160% of the VLF, plus $100 registration and $100 CHP late fees.
For a vehicle with a $200 VLF, letting registration lapse for just over a month adds $180 in penalties: $120 from the VLF surcharge and $60 in flat fees.
Driving with expired registration is also an infraction under Vehicle Code 4000(a)(1). The fine is typically around $280 plus court costs, though it’s usually treated as a correctable “fix-it ticket” if you register the car promptly. Police generally won’t cite you if registration expired less than two months ago, but that informal buffer doesn’t stop the DMV’s financial penalties, which start on day one.
After You Pay

When the sticker arrives, attach it to your rear license plate, replacing the prior year’s tabs.13California Legislative Information. If your registration card or sticker is later lost, stolen, or damaged, you can order a replacement online, at a kiosk, by mail, or in person by filing an Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156) and paying the replacement fee.14State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. When the DMV Won’t Let You Renew
The DMV will refuse to process a renewal if certain obligations are outstanding. The most common block comes from unpaid parking tickets or toll violations, and every violation on your record has to be cleared by the issuing agency or paid along with the renewal fees before the DMV releases the registration.15California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Parking/Toll Violations on Record If an online renewal is rejected and you’re not sure why, check for outstanding citations first. Contacting the issuing agency directly to pay or resolve the balance is usually faster than working it out at the DMV.
An insurance lapse can also suspend your registration. If your carrier reported a cancellation, you’ll need to submit proof of current coverage before the renewal will go through.3California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Evidence of Financial Responsibility
If You’re Not Driving the Car
When a vehicle won’t be driven, towed, or parked on public roads for the entire registration year, you can file Planned Nonoperation instead of renewing. The PNO filing fee is $28, well below a full renewal.10California Department of Motor Vehicles. Registration Fees It’s the right call for a car in long-term storage, a project vehicle, or a second car you’re not using.
You can file for PNO up to 60 days before your registration expires or up to 90 days after, though filing after expiration means late penalties on top of the $28 fee.16California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Planned Nonoperation Filing The condition is absolute: if the vehicle is operated or parked anywhere it could receive a citation while on PNO status, you’ll owe the full year’s registration fees and penalties.
Military Fee Waiver
Nonresident members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in California, along with their nonresident spouses, are exempt from the Vehicle License Fee. Since the VLF is often the largest single charge on the renewal, this is a real savings.17California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Nonresident Military Personnel
To claim it, submit a completed Nonresident Military Vehicle License Fee and Transportation Improvement Fee Exemption form (REG 5045). Bring a valid military ID if you apply in person. The vehicle must be registered in your name or your nonresident spouse’s name and cannot be operated for hire. The exemption covers any vehicle or trailer coach you own or lease.
