How to Renew Car Registration in NJ: Fees, PIN, and Penalties

To renew your car registration in NJ, you have three options: online through the MVC portal, by mail using the pre-printed form, or in person at any MVC agency. The Motor Vehicle Commission mails a renewal notice about three months before your registration expires, and that notice carries the PIN and fee amount you’ll need. Every method requires proof of active auto insurance and payment of the renewal fee.

Your Renewal Notice and PIN

The MVC mails the renewal notice roughly three months before your current registration expires.¹ It lists your vehicle details, the renewal fee, and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) printed in the bottom right corner. You need that PIN to renew online, so hold onto the notice.

Lost it? You can still renew. On the online renewal portal, click the “Help! I lost my PIN!” link to request a new one, as long as you’re inside your renewal window.¹ You can also renew by mail or in person without the notice, though it slows things down.

What You Need Before You Start

Every renewal method requires proof of active insurance. The MVC will not process a renewal without it. Clear any outstanding parking tickets first, because New Jersey suspends registrations for unpaid parking violations.

For online renewal, gather:

Your PIN from the renewal notice (or a replacement PIN from the portal)
Your Social Security Number
Your insurance ID card, or the policy number plus your insurer’s three-digit ID
A credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover)

You don’t enter your license plate number, VIN, or driver’s license number when renewing online. The PIN pulls everything together on the MVC’s end.²

For in-person renewal, bring your renewal notice or VIN, your license plate number, and your insurance card.¹ MVC agencies accept cash, checks, money orders, and major credit cards.³

For mail renewal, you’ll need the pre-printed form from the notice and a check or money order made out to “NJMVC.”¹

Renewing Online

Online is the fastest method and the right choice for most people. Go to the MVC’s renewal portal at mymvc.state.nj.us/reg-renewal/, enter your PIN, Social Security Number, and insurance information, and pay by credit card. The renewal takes effect immediately.¹ The new registration documents arrive in the mail within 7 to 14 days.²

Because the renewal is effective the moment you complete it, the confirmation screen acts as your proof of current registration while you wait for the physical card. Save or print it.

Renewing by Mail

Fill out the form included with the renewal notice, write a check or money order payable to “NJMVC” for the amount listed, and send both back in the provided envelope.¹ Don’t send cash. Give yourself several weeks of lead time before the expiration date, since mail transit plus the 7-to-14-day return window adds up.

Renewing In Person

Any MVC agency location can process a renewal. Check hours and location on the MVC website or call 609-292-6500 before you go.⁴ Bring the renewal notice (or your VIN), your insurance card, and your license plate number.¹ You’ll usually walk out with your new registration card the same day.

Registration Fees

Fees depend on your vehicle’s weight and model year. For most modern passenger cars registered in New Jersey, expect between $46.50 and $84.00:

Under 3,500 lbs., more than 2 years old: $46.50
Under 3,500 lbs., within 2 years of model year: $59.00
Over 3,500 lbs., more than 2 years old: $71.50
Over 3,500 lbs., within 2 years of model year: $84.00

Pre-1980 vehicles fall into lower brackets ranging from $35.50 to $72.50. Drivers aged 65 and older, and people with disabilities, get $7 off any passenger vehicle registration fee.⁵

Electric Vehicle Surcharge

If you drive a zero-emission vehicle, an extra annual fee stacks onto the standard registration cost. The surcharge started at $250 in July 2024 and rises $10 each year for four years, putting the 2026 ZEV fee at $270. It’s due in full at every renewal.⁵

If you bought a new ZEV, four years of the surcharge were bundled into your initial registration payment, so you won’t see the charge again until that period ends.

After You Renew

For online and mail renewals, the new registration card arrives within 7 to 14 days.² For in-person renewals, you generally get it at the counter. New Jersey law requires you to carry the registration certificate, driver’s license, and insurance card whenever you’re driving, so keep all three in the vehicle.

If the card is lost or damaged, request a duplicate online or at a Vehicle Services Agency with your driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a completed Form BA-49.⁶ A fee applies.

If You’ve Moved

Update your address before you renew. New Jersey requires a current address on file with the MVC, and address changes must be done online.⁷ A duplicate registration card reflecting the new address costs $5. Skip the update and your renewal notice goes to the old address, which is how drivers end up expired without realizing it.

Penalties for Expired Registration

Driving with an expired registration is a traffic violation carrying a fine of up to $100. Parking an unregistered vehicle on a public road is also illegal, and police can tow it on the spot, leaving you responsible for towing and storage costs on top of the fine.⁸ The statute contains no grace period; you’re expired the day after the date on the card.

A lapse in insurance is a separate risk. New Jersey monitors coverage, and if your carrier reports a cancellation, the MVC can suspend your registration on its own.⁹

Inspection Is a Separate Requirement

Renewing your registration does not cover vehicle inspection. Most passenger vehicles need inspection every two years, new vehicles get a five-year window from purchase, and you can complete inspection up to two months before the windshield sticker expires.¹⁰ Fully electric vehicles, motorcycles, motorized bicycles, historic vehicles with QQ plates that are at least 25 years old and unmodified, and certain older gasoline-powered vehicles are exempt from inspection based on model year and weight.¹¹
