To renew your PA vehicle registration, you can go online through PennDOT, mail in your renewal form, or visit a PennDOT service center or authorized messenger. A standard passenger vehicle is $48 for one year or $96 for two, and PennDOT sends a renewal notice about three months before your current registration expires.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Pull out your current registration card or the renewal notice PennDOT mailed you. You’ll need your seven-character plate number and your vehicle’s title number from those documents, plus a current odometer reading and your insurance details: company name, policy number, and effective dates. Your vehicle also needs a valid Pennsylvania safety inspection, and in designated counties, a current emissions inspection. Emissions testing applies to gasoline-powered cars, vans, and light-duty trucks from model year 1975 and newer. What It Costs
PennDOT adjusted fees on April 16, 2025, under Act 89’s consumer price index provisions. The common categories:
- Passenger vehicles: $48 for one year, $96 for two years if eligible
- Motorcycles: $25 per year
- Trailers: $15 (Class 2), $46 (Class 3), or $223 for permanent registration
Not every vehicle qualifies for the two-year option. Your renewal notice will show “N/A” in the two-year block if yours doesn’t. Twenty-five counties add a $5-per-year local-use fee, authorized under Act 89 of 2013. If your vehicle is registered in one, the fee shows up automatically on your renewal total. The participating counties are Allegheny, Berks, Beaver, Blair, Bucks, Butler, Cambria, Centre, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Greene, Lackawanna, Lycoming, Mifflin, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Pike, Schuylkill, Union, Wayne, Westmoreland, and York.5PennDOT. The Three Ways to Renew
Online
PennDOT’s online renewal portal is the fastest route. Enter your plate number, title number, insurance information, and odometer reading, then pay with a credit or debit card. At the end of the transaction you print your permanent registration credential on your own printer. By Mail
Use the renewal form PennDOT mailed you. If you’ve lost it, download Form MV-140 from the PennDOT website. Enclose a check or money order payable to the “Commonwealth of Pennsylvania” and send it to:

In Person
You can go to a PennDOT driver and vehicle service center or any PennDOT-authorized messenger service. Bring your current registration card or renewal notice, proof of insurance, and payment. Messenger services can hand you new registration documents the same day, but they charge their own service fees on top of PennDOT’s statutory fee. What Happens After You Renew

Pennsylvania eliminated registration stickers at the end of 2016 under Act 89. You won’t receive a plate sticker and you don’t need one. Law enforcement verifies registration status electronically through PennDOT’s database. Your safety inspection sticker still belongs on the windshield.8Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If You Miss the Deadline or Lose Insurance
Driving with an expired registration is a summary offense. Within 60 days of expiration, the fine is $25. Beyond 60 days, it becomes $75 or double the registration fee, whichever is greater. An insurance lapse is more serious. If PennDOT determines your vehicle lacked required coverage, your registration is suspended for three months and your driving privileges can be suspended for the same period, with a $300 fine on conviction. Once per twelve-month period, you can pay a $500 civil penalty plus a restoration fee and provide proof of current insurance to avoid actually serving the suspension.11Pennsylvania General Assembly. These penalties stack. If both your registration and insurance lapse and you get pulled over, you’re paying the expired-registration fine plus the insurance suspension costs.
Address Changes and Replacement Cards
Pennsylvania law requires you to report an address change to PennDOT within 15 days of moving. Your renewal notice goes to the address on file, so an outdated address means a missed notice and a new card sent to the wrong place.
