When Your Tags Expire
For a personal vehicle, registration expires on the owner’s birthday each year. If more than one vehicle owner lives at the same address, any owner’s birthday can serve as the expiration date for all vehicles there. Leased vehicles expire on the 20th of a month tied to the first letter of the leasing company’s name, and commercial registrations expire on the last day of a month tied to the last two digits of the federal tax ID or Social Security number.1Ohio BMV. What to Have Ready
Whichever method you choose, you need a valid Ohio driver license or state ID and proof that the vehicle is insured. You will sign a statement confirming your coverage. Bring your renewal notice if you have one; it speeds things up but is not required in person or online. Whether You Need an E-Check First
Seven counties require a passing emissions test before you can renew: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit. If your vehicle is registered in one of them and does not qualify for an exemption, complete E-Check first. Skipping it can lead to registration suspension and plate confiscation.2Ohio EPA. E-Check
Under legislation that took effect June 30, 2025, gas and diesel vehicles are exempt for their first six model years, and non-plug-in hybrids for their first seven. Vehicles with a gross weight rating above 10,000 pounds are also exempt. For 2026, testing starts with model year 2020 gas and diesel vehicles and model year 2019 non-plug-in hybrids.2Ohio EPA. Renewing Online
The fastest option is OPLATES.com. Enter your plate number and the last four of your VIN, confirm your insurance, and pay by credit card or electronic check. A confirmation email lands right away, and your new registration card and plate stickers come in the mail.4Ohio BMV Online Services. BMV Online Services Delivery takes a few weeks, so if your expiration is close, in-person renewal is safer.
Renewing in Person
Any deputy registrar location handles renewals, and you leave with your stickers and registration card the same day. Bring your Ohio license or state ID and be ready to sign the insurance certification. If you live in an E-Check county, the deputy registrar’s system pulls your test result electronically.1Ohio BMV. Renewing by Mail
Mail renewal takes about four weeks, so start early in the 90-day window. Send your completed renewal notice, signed insurance certification, and a check or money order payable to the Ohio Treasurer of State to the BMV’s Registration Support Services address in Columbus. What Renewal Costs
The total depends on your vehicle and where you live. On top of the base state fee, expect some combination of the following:
- Local permissive taxes. Counties can levy up to $20, and municipalities and townships can add their own. State law caps the combined local permissive tax at $30 per vehicle unless the tax funds a regional transportation improvement project.6Greene County, OH. Permissive Motor Vehicle License Tax
- Alternative fuel surcharge. Hybrids pay an extra $100, plug-in hybrids $150, and fully electric vehicles $200 at every renewal.7Ohio BMV. First-Time Issuance
- Deputy registrar service fee, added when you renew in person.
The BMV calculates the full amount during the transaction, so you will see the exact total before paying.8Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees Two drivers with the same car can pay noticeably different amounts based on county and city.
If You Renew Late
Ohio charges an administrative late fee if you renew after your expiration date, and the BMV adds it automatically to your renewal total. The amount scales with how long the registration has been expired.
Driving on expired tags is a separate matter. Failing to file your annual registration is a minor misdemeanor under Ohio law, which can carry a fine of up to $150.9Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.11 A stop for expired tags also gives an officer reason to check your insurance status, which can make things worse if coverage has lapsed.
Putting the New Sticker On
Place the new validation sticker on a clean, dry surface in the lower right corner of your rear license plate.
