If you never got or can’t find your Texas renewal notice, you can still renew your vehicle registration in Texas without the notice. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles only needs your license plate number and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to pull up your record, and you can renew online, in person at your county tax assessor-collector’s office, or by mail.
What You Need Instead of the Notice
The paper notice is a convenience, not a requirement. To renew without it, have two pieces of vehicle information ready: your license plate number and your VIN. If you don’t have the VIN memorized, look at your proof of insurance card, the base of the windshield on the driver’s side, or the sticker on the driver-side door jamb.
You also need active Texas liability insurance. TxDMV verifies your coverage electronically, so the policy has to be current before you start. If it has lapsed, reinstate it first or the system will stop you.
If you live in a county that still requires emissions testing, you need a passing emissions inspection on file. TxDMV recommends waiting at least 24 hours after the inspection before renewing online so the result has time to upload.1Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. FAQs
Renewing Online
Online is the fastest route. Use the Texas by Texas (TxT) site and app or TxDMV’s portal at renew.txdmv.gov.2Texas state government. You can renew online even if your registration has already expired, as long as it expired no more than 12 months ago. One exception: if you received a citation for expired registration, you can’t renew online and have to go in person.1Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. FAQs
Renewing In Person
Go to your county tax assessor-collector’s office or an approved substation with your plate number, VIN, and proof of insurance. Staff can pull your record without the notice, and you’ll walk out with the new sticker the same day. Most offices accept cash, check, money order, and credit or debit cards. Some add a small convenience fee on card payments.
Renewing by Mail
You can mail your renewal to your county tax assessor-collector’s office. Include your plate number, VIN, and a check or money order for the amount due. Don’t send cash or credit card numbers. Processing takes time, so if you’re close to the expiration date, use online or in-person renewal instead.
Inspections in 2025
Texas eliminated mandatory safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, under House Bill 3297. Standard passenger cars and light trucks no longer need a safety inspection to renew.5Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Texas Vehicle Inspection Changes Coming Soon
Emissions testing is the exception. In 17 counties, mostly around Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso, you still need a passing emissions inspection first. Those counties are Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson.5Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. What Renewal Costs
The base annual registration fee for a passenger vehicle or light truck (6,000 lbs. or less) is $50.75. Your county adds a local fee that runs from nothing in a few small counties up to $21.50 in Bexar and Cameron. If Your Registration Has Already Expired
Texas gives you a five-working-day grace period after expiration to keep driving while you sort out the renewal. After that fifth working day, driving on expired registration is an offense under the Texas Transportation Code.7State of Texas. The citation itself can often be dismissed. If you renew your registration and pay the fee no later than the 20th working day after the offense or before your first court appearance, whichever comes later, a judge can dismiss the charge and assess a reimbursement fee of up to $20.7State of Texas. The statute also provides a defense if your county tax office was closed for an extended period and your registration was expired for 30 working days or fewer during that closure.
Update Your Address So the Notice Arrives Next Year
If a move is why the notice never reached you, update your mailing address with TxDMV at renew.txdmv.gov. You’ll need your plate number and the last four digits of your VIN, and the change takes effect within two business days. This online tool only updates where the renewal notice is mailed.
