If you are a senior in Colorado, renewing your driver’s license works the same way it does for any adult driver until you turn 80. The five-year cycle, the $34 fee, and the eye-test requirement do not change at 65 or 70. What changes at 80 is that you must submit a signed eye examination report from an optometrist or ophthalmologist when you renew online or by mail. Everything else about how to renew your Colorado driver’s license as a senior stays the same across the adult years.
What Actually Changes With Age
Colorado issues standard adult licenses on a five-year renewal cycle, and the state does not shorten that cycle for older drivers.1Justia. Colorado Code 42-2-118 – Renewal of License in Person, by Mail, or Electronically An 85-year-old renews on the same schedule as a 35-year-old. Every renewal requires an application, the fee, and a vision check.
Until 2021, the state required extra vision documentation starting at 66 and blocked drivers over 65 from renewing online. House Bill 21-1139 moved both thresholds to 80 and removed the online cap entirely.2Colorado General Assembly. HB21-1139 Driver’s License Electronic Renewal by Seniors So if you are in your 60s or 70s, you renew like any other adult: attest that you have had an eye exam within the past year, pay the fee, and submit your application.
Vision Requirements at 80 and Over
Once you reach 80, remote renewals require documentation. You must submit a signed Eye Examination Report (Form DR 2498) from an optometrist or ophthalmologist confirming an exam within the preceding six months.3Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Mature Drivers The form gets uploaded with an online application or mailed in with a paper application on Form DR 2330, which is specific to this age group.4Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Renewing in person is the workaround if you would rather skip the outside eye appointment. The driver license technician administers the eye exam on-site, so you do not need Form DR 2498 at all.3Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Mature Drivers Online applications from drivers 80 and older go through a DMV review step before they are finalized, which adds a short processing delay compared to younger applicants.
Vision Standards That Apply at Any Age
Every renewal applicant has to meet the same visual acuity floor: 20/40 in at least one eye. If you can only reach 20/40 with corrective lenses, the DMV adds a “C” restriction requiring you to wear glasses or contacts while driving. Other restriction codes you may see include “D” for daylight-only driving, placed on the recommendation of a vision specialist, and “G” for a required left-side rearview mirror.5Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. a href=”https://dmv.colorado.gov/faq-driver-license” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>FAQ – Driver License
If you cannot hit 20/40, the DMV will not process a standard renewal. Your next step is a Confidential Eye Examination Report (Form DR 2402), completed by a physician, physician assistant, advanced practice registered nurse, or eye specialist. The form is valid for 180 days from the date of the exam.6Colorado Department of Revenue. How to Renew
Online or Through the myColorado App
The Colorado DMV’s online portal and the myColorado app both let you complete the application, upload any required forms, and pay the fee from home.4Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Renew Your Colorado Driver License, Permit, or ID Card Drivers under 80 attest to a recent eye exam; drivers 80 and older upload Form DR 2498.
One catch: if your vision correction status has changed since your last renewal, for example you had cataract surgery and no longer need glasses, you must renew in person so the technician can verify the change.
By Mail
Mail-in renewal is available if your renewal notice indicates you are eligible for it. Applicants 80 and older use Form DR 2330 and must include the completed DR 2498.4Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Renew Your Colorado Driver License, Permit, or ID Card Mail applications take longer to process, so send yours well before your license expires.
In Person
Schedule an appointment through the DMV’s online booking system. The technician administers the eye test at the office, so a separate vision form is not needed at any age. After processing, your receipt combined with your old or expired credential serves as a temporary license until your permanent card arrives by mail.7Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. The Fee
The standard renewal fee is $34, and it applies whether you renew online, by mail, or in person.8Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. State DMV Fees
REAL ID at Renewal
REAL ID enforcement for domestic air travel began on May 7, 2025. Travelers who reach a TSA checkpoint without a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable ID now face a $45 fee.9Transportation Security Administration. If the DMV Asks You to Re-Test
Renewal is not the only moment your fitness to drive can be reviewed. Immediate family members, law enforcement officers, and medical professionals can each submit a request asking the DMV to re-examine a driver, and the DMV can also open a review on its own.12Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. If a re-examination is ordered, the DMV mails you a letter explaining what it needs and by when. The requirements can include a written test, an eye exam, a behind-the-wheel test with a state evaluator, or a completed DR 2401 or DR 2402 medical form. The deadlines are short. You typically have 20 days to pass a written or eye test, 60 days for a driving test, and 30 days to submit a medical report. Miss the deadline or fail the test, and the DMV cancels your driving privilege. Pass before the action date, and the cancellation is rescinded.13Legal Information Institute. 1 CCR 204-30-03 – Driver License Re-Examination / Medical Examination
If the DMV separately asks for a medical evaluation because of a health concern, you may need a Confidential Medical Examination Report (Form DR 2401), completed by your physician after the date on the DMV’s notice.14Colorado Department of Revenue. Confidential Medical Examination Report
When You’re Ready to Stop Driving
If you decide not to renew, Colorado lets you surrender your license at any driver license office with no penalty. You can then downgrade to a state ID card, which works for everything except driving. Residents over 60 get the ID card free, whether processed online or in person.12Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. A valid state ID keeps you able to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, and handle the everyday situations that call for photo identification.
