When to Apply

Your Oregon Concealed Handgun License is valid for exactly four years from its issue date. State law gives you a 45-day grace period during which your expired card stays valid, but only if you applied before the expiration date, you carry proof of the renewal application, and the application hasn’t been denied.¹

Most county offices recommend starting four to six weeks before expiration. Appointment slots can be limited, and waiting until the final week is how people end up unlicensed. Check your sheriff’s website early enough to book with room to spare.

Eligibility Hasn’t Changed Since You First Applied

The criteria for renewal are the same as for an original license. You must still be at least 21 and either a U.S. citizen or a legal resident noncitizen who has lived in the county at least six months and declared intent to naturalize. You must reside in the county issuing the license, though residents of Washington, Idaho, Nevada, or California may qualify in certain Oregon counties if they can show a specific connection there.²

You cannot have a felony conviction, a misdemeanor conviction within the past four years, an outstanding warrant, or be on pretrial release. You cannot be subject to a restraining order or stalking citation that bars firearm possession, and you cannot have been found mentally ill under Oregon law in a way that prohibits firearm possession.³ If anything in your record has shifted since your last renewal, sort it out before you file rather than waiting for the background check to flag it.

Address or Name Changes Before Renewal

Move within Oregon and you have 30 days to report the new address to your county sheriff. The office issues a replacement card with the updated information, and the original expiration date stays the same.¹ Update your address with the Oregon DMV first; most counties require it.

The typical fee for an address or name change is $15, and many offices handle these without an appointment.⁵ If the change falls close to your renewal date, ask about rolling it into the renewal itself so you pay the $75 once rather than paying separately.

Lost or Damaged Card

If your CHL is lost, stolen, or damaged and your renewal isn’t due yet, request a duplicate from your county sheriff’s office. The fee is typically $15, and the replacement is mailed. If Your Renewal Is Denied

A denial comes with a written notice explaining the reason. You have 30 days from receiving that notice to petition the circuit court in your county for review. The court must schedule a hearing within 15 judicial days of your filing, or as soon as practicable after.⁶
